      ...it not always ends up in a crash... the “whoop whoop, Pull up, pull up” just means that you are close to the terrain, but if you are able to move the thrust levers forward or just press the TOGA switch and simultaneously pull up the yoke, you can live for another mistake.

    Speaking as a pilot, there are only 2 things that scare me while I'm in any plane;
    1) Inflight fire. The chances of surviving an inflight fire are not very good. Plus, a fire will usually lead to......
    2) Structural failure. This is REALLY rare except in the case of a fire. Then it becomes avery real possibility.
    This crew did the very best they possibly could but the fire spread too quickly. They had no chance at all.

    When they're nose down heading into total blackness and you just know there's an ocean out there that they're about to slam into... just the video of a simulation of it hit me in the gut. Can't imagine that feeling being in the plane. And then the flash of the sea for a split second as the lights hit it... terrifying.

    As a fellow Korean who heard about this crash, it was a really sad crash. But the press made a lot of really bad speculation about one of the pilots tried to crash the plane by himself and fake it as an accident to get rid of his debt... That really pissed me off.
    As I know, most of Korean commercial pilots are ex-ROKAF pilots and flew for more than 10 years before retiring and getting a job in the airlines. And they are full of pride with their jobs. In the end, suicide theory was turned out to be a false theory, as the pilot was not in financial difficilty. And the pilots' bodies were recovered among cockpit wreckage, still strapped to their seats.
    Too bad the cause of the fire and the location of Black boxes are unknown. May the pilots rest in peace.

    • @TheDoubleace191
      @TheDoubleace191 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      And few more things to add. The plane was just 5 years old and didn't get the chance to be repainted into new livery. So if the video was made with the plane in old livery, that would've been perfect but still very nice product.
      BTW, investigators think the rear part broke off approximately 5 seconds after 1st officer's last words: the moment the plane started steep dive to ocean(7:26).

      I do not blame you. They pissed me off too. Pilots from certain countries other than the U.S. are quickly suspected of suicide or terrorism in an airplane crash. We have our own terrorists not only others. It's easy to blame dead men. The airport big shots will always try to blame the pilot. a lot of crashes are because of pilots yes it is true being overworked, or they think they did something but didn't or did it the wrong way. Were not paying attention or became too complacent or even scared after all they are the first ones to see their death coming up closer and closer from the ground. It must be horrible to see that. For whatever human reason pilots are just a part of the puzzle when a plane crashes. The bag handler who put in mini oxygen bottles and did not check to make sure they were empty and closed and tagged. The supervisor who signed off on it that it was checked and able to board the airplane safely. Everyone died when one of the oxygen bottles blew up. Or the idiot who was to replace a small side window in the cockpit and did a shitty deadly job for not paying attention to what he was doing or wasn't qualified and came cheap. The window flew off in midair causing the captain to be sucked through the front view window and because of his crew's alertness they were able to catch him by his feet and hold on to him until the co-pilot brought the plane down. They were at cruising level so they were like 34,000 feet or slightly higher. The captain could not breathe up that high and he was being whipped with winds that were too cold and strong for us to endure. He managed to turn his head to the side to stop getting slashed from the wind full face. Now they knew he was somewhat alive. They had to bring the plane down quickly but easy not to lose him. Everyone thought he was dead but the man survived to tell his story. I hope these people and their supervisors got what they deserved at the end. Unqualified employees who are not intelligent enough to understand and digest or take seriously that an error can cause lives and a lot of them. What makes one employee understand this and work with this in mind to do the best work he can and the other guy who really does not give a shit,? Is it a difference in pay? Would they work more carefully and have more concern for the passenger if they were paid more? Or is it just a certain breed of people who should not have such responsible jobs? it's Friday and payday and he is in a hurry to go home take a shower and hit the clubs. That guy should have given some kind of red flag in his interview and was probably hired just because they needed to hire someone in a hurry that will come cheap. That is the mentality of the ass kissing supervisor or management who sit in these beautiful offices overlooking the whole airport view in his tailor-made suit working to make sure Mr. Boeing does not lose money. All this for a pat on the head and a bonus check and fuck the safety of the people. Today the airplanes can sit more than 500 souls. Sure it's the safest way to travel but when they crash they makeup and more for all the time in between because they devastate and destroy the bodies of the victims some will never be found and it's always more than not that hundreds die at the same time and very violently. I don't even know sometimes I wonder if we should even be flying I swear. Nothing that man makes creates is perfect. But it becomes an idol and airplanes are even baptized. They become the new money maker in the billions. It becomes their gods, their idols, their money maker. I have always believed that commercial airplane Pilots and their crews should be one of the highest paid jobs in town like teachers should be the one who earns the most because without teachers there would not even be any teachers. But pilot's and crew should be paid well and they are not. I always thought they did but now I know better. My reason they should be more respected by the airlines and make more money is because every day they go to work they have one leg on the ground and one leg in the cemetery.

    One thing I love about flight is that once a pilot declares an emergency, ATC has no control over what they do, the pilots tell them what they are going to do and what they need and the ATC moves everything and everyone else outta the way.

    I watch these heart-wrenching videos and while I'm fascinated by what goes on in the cockpit, I keep imagining what must be happening in the cabin during all this. The sheer, abject terror the passengers and crew must be experiencing as the plane tumults to the ground or sea is absolutely beyond comprehension.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anna B: It was a cargo plane, probably no passengers or even heat. The 747 is suppose to be able to carry 10 times it's weight. I talked with a stewardess on that flight leaving NYC/Alaska/ Seoul after leaving Alaska it accidentally went 180 degrees off course over Russia and Russians forced it down on a frozen lake. Next year KAL shot down over Kamchatka Russia during cold war. KAL pilots trying to save fuel. Fly only USA based airlines. I've flown USA to Seoul maybe 20+ times, never on KAL or JAL (Japan). Pilots not trained as well.

    On the 747, once the cabin fire warning goes off, you have only a few short minutes to fly until control cables are burned through. There have been 3 747 cargo fires that I know of. Nobody survived any of them.
    Rapid descent & ditching while still under control might be the only option.

      Particularly when Shanghai is so well served by consolidated sea container lines out of all nearby ports. No-one needs their lithium batteries so quickly that human lives are compromised. Forwarding agents know their clients and know what products are dangerous. Hundreds of kilos of lithium batteries do not exactly go unnoticed when the exporting company is organising their delivery with the help of, generally speaking, a forwarding agency whose staff know exactly what their client is liable to export. This is not a case of human error; it is a case of inhumane arrogance: "I'm your client, I want those batteries in Shanghai asap, so don't go hysterical on me! Get my goods to where I want them to be when I want them there..." and two people die as a result.
      I had a good job as an in-house forwarding agent for a large engineering corporation, and I resigned over instructions I received to ship radio-active sources for welding control. I then did my own thing, and my ex-employers picked up a large fine and were obliged to have all their transport needs authorised by an independent inspection and certification company, in this case Veritas: No Veritas declaration that the goods were safe for transport by whichever means, no transport by that means. Ever tried deceiving Veritas???
      I then sued my ex-employers for constructive dismissal because they had made it clear that I needed to break basic safety standards to keep my job. They settled, generously, before the first hearing of the case. But even if I had not been well-paid for digging my heels in I would have been very satisfied that the dangerous game I refused to play had been stopped dead. To prove I was not worried about resigning I went and joined the French Foreign Legion, Ier REP, 1ere Compagnie. At least the people we killed had had the same chance of survival as us. I was meticulous about avoiding harming innocent third parties, and was approved for doing so. It comes to something when a killing machine shows more respect for human life than whoever put those lethal products exactly where they should not have been.

    If this seems harsh, think of the UPS Flight 6 crash in Dubai. The plane was full of smoke, nighttime over the desert, so he couldn't see anything, including instruments. It took everything to keep the plane level. He certainly couldn't adjust frequencies on the radio. He ended up having to talk to another jet who relayed it to another ATC, who got on the phone with the correct airport, got their response, relayed it to the other jet, who relayed it back to him. This delayed information several minutes, plus with everyone involved, English was a second language so words and meanings changed. Why couldn't one person at the airport where he was attempting to land simply change their frequency to his until he lands? He crashed a couple miles from the runway. He would have made it if he could have communicated directly with the correct ATC.

    When are pilots ever going to learn... when there's a fire onboard, get that plane down a.s.a.p.? Every pilot should be aware of potential emergency landing spots along the route. Make a decision. Don't change ones mind. Just get the burning 'heavy' onto the ground a.s.a.p.

    • @tygervoods8358
      @tygervoods8358 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tf were they supposed to do? When you have a fire onboard at 35000 Its gonna eat up the entire plane and there's almost nothing a pilot can do to prevent a plane crash. UPS 6 crashed very similarly in Dubai and wasn't that far off the coast yet at the end the fire damaged all the controls like the one here and captain passed out from the smoke. The copilot did try to go back "asap" even tho they got down to approach height but still crashed. These pilots also acted quite quickly since they issued an emergency and descended to 10000 before losing controls, what else could they have done.

  • @oveidasinclair982
    @oveidasinclair982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The fire must have burned through the control wires, one of the biggest reasons I don't like fly by wire technology. If the jet had turn buckles and stainless steel control cables from the flight deck to the control surfaces, they still would have had flight controls, enough for a successful ditching at least.

    I wonder why they lost pitch and yaw authority, actually they lost pitch and rudder control all together, one can only surmise that the fire must have burnt through the control runs or hydraulic lines but I know the types installed in wide body airliners to be extremely fire proof and hydraulic fluid has a very high boiling point so the fire on deck must have been severe to say the least. Not only that but to sever or burn the hydraulic runs or cables the fire would have first had to burn through or destroy major structures like the main deck flooring (reinforced in the cargo variant of the 7474) and interior. One associates a phosphorous type flame with Lithium Polymer battery combustion, if this was the cause one can imagine a fire hot enough to melt metal and render the control systems inoperable, I shudder at the thought of what their final moments would have been like RIP.

      "Altitudes above, probably, 18,000 feet would be dangerous for someone to exit and immediately deploy a parachute," Crouch tells Condé Nast Traveler. "Supplemental oxygen is required for skydivers starting at 15,000 feet while riding up in an airplane, since the planes used for skydiving are not pressurized. There would be a chance of losing consciousness until descending into lower altitudes." Crouch also points out that temperatures at 35,000 feet-which, consequently, is about three times the height of an average jump-are inhospitable, to say the least: 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and maybe colder. It's dangerous for the human body to be exposed to such temperatures so immediately-scientists have suggested that the eyes, mouth, and nose would freeze almost instantly. (Wind chill isn't even factored in here.) Lungs, too, would expand so quickly that they could explode, reports Popular Science.

    Why don't the cargo flight pilots atleast have emergency exit and parachute?

    • @masterp443
      @masterp443 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The cabin is pressurized so that the doors cannot open at 30,000 feet. The pressurization allows the people inside to breathe, as the air outside the cabin is too thin to breathe. If the pilots could escape at such an altitude, they would likely pass out from oxygen deprivation and fall to their deaths. Even if pressurization was not a factor, the pilots would risk being sucked into the jet engines if they tried to parachute out of the plane, unless they escaped from the back.

      Too bad there isn't some kind of release hatch that could drop them out of the plane once they've reached a certain altitude.

    I dont know why i keep watching these videos with tragic endings & keep agonising over the lost souls.Cant we hv ejection parachutes on civilian liners?

      500 people ejecting at the same time from an A380? I don't think that would work.

      And over a body of water at that. To be stranded in the middle of the ocean is terrifying enough for me. Also imagine the cabin crew trying to orchestrate that in a matter of minutes.

    What is more important to a pilot, landing a burning 747 on a runway far away, or taking more immediate action to ditch the aircraft and hope for survival and rescue? Does anybody believe a burning aircraft can take a looong trip back to a runway, regardless if the emergency procedures say they should?
    Also, why not depressurize the hold and fly *higher* if you are willing to fly with a fire. Flying at 35-40k feet altitude where there is 1/5 of the oxygen. Then walk into the hold and try to control the fire! In these situations, it's live or die. Adding oxygen by descending but then taking a long flight to "safety" seems like a difficult but worse choice. Thoughts, folks?

    The only chance at survival of these two brave pilots, was for them to immediately start ditching procedure immediately after the fire alarm. They had just 18 minutes to execute.
