This was my first time truly cloud surfing, and it was awesome!
Thanks so much to Ali for inviting me along for this flight, and thanks to the weather gods for making it interesting :P

Here are some further details regarding the actual weather and our decision making process:
The TAF for London was noteworthy for light rain and marginal VFR conditions with ceilings of between 1500 to 3000 for the time we were expecting to be there but not much else. We experienced a real time demonstration of how fast things could change while airborne. Using G1000 satellite weather, Foreflight/Stratus weather on iPad, and ATC chatter from other planes in the area, we started developing a picture for what the weather was doing; and what it was doing was happening much faster than forecast. We concluded that even though we can make it to London before it got hit, a full stop landing and lunch as planned would ground us for an extended period of time. Shortly after us departing the area, the system hit London resulting in the need to issue 4 SPECI METAR's within 1 hour. Although disappointed to change plans, as many of us would be under similar circumstances, Ali and I were glad with our correct assessment of a very fluid situation and our ability to make the correct calls and stick to them.
I want to thank several users from reddit/flying for helping me dig up the archival weather info to confirm the details for this video, as it was a couple months after the flight that I did the editing.

DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial.I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feed back is invited; however, please keep it positive
Many times when I am out in the Bahamas by myself I disconnect the autopilot and play with the clouds...nothing better. :)
***** Oh we did that - Ali let me hand fly it through the "cloud city", but I didn't cut it into the video because I came so close to busting heading and altitude that Ali was going to kill me :)
If you ever make it to south Florida or I make it up your way we should take a flight together.
This has to be one of your best videos yet. I just received my IFR endorsement a few months ago. As hard as the training was, it pays off tenfold. It's such a relief to know you can plan a long trip without having to worry about cloud clearance. It just makes flying tremendously more enjoyable.
Wings & Wheels awesome - thanks! And for sure - IFR really opens things up - I am looking forward to getting into that part of my flying career.
Pretty sweet. Gotta love cloud surfing, and there's just something exhilarating about racing storms!
MrAviation101 Yeah - this was a pretty awesome flight. I'm just back from a flight in the Super Cub where I was doing circuits after a storm front had passed and before another arrived... I was very careful to get a thorough Wx briefing so I knew what to expect, but the gusty conditions and variable cross wind was crazy - not a day for a passenger - but a great one to nail down my tail wheel fundamentals!
As a regular renter of N822SA I really want to thank you for posting this video. It is great for me to have this to show people.
Robert Arwine Awesome!
After thirty years, I NEVER bore of "cumulusurfing" Got to be the prettiest sights in aviation, other than Vegas at night. Great video and love that airplane !
Yet another great video. Thanks man.
I remember doing this in an Army Lynx heli on the way back from the UK to Germany...then landing at Gütersloh with the cloud base down to 50 feet.
The pilot was flying the approach on instruments, and the Commander staring out of the cockpit, hands hovering over the controls, ready to snatch them off the pilot the second he saw landing lights. Those guys earned their money that day.
kelticpaddler That's an awesome story - thanks for sharing!
Chops- perhaps my favorite video so far. What an awesome airplane and apparently an equally awesome owner. Cloud surfing in a fast and capable twin certainly takes it to a new level. Awesome!
Rod Boone Thanks Rod! And yes, it was very inspiring to watch how comfortable Ali was flying that airplane.
***** I'm just amazed by the efficiency of the Austro AE300 and other Jet-A burning diesel engines. 199 kts GS and sipping 7.4 gph per side. Any idea what kind of tailwind you had?
Rod Boone I think it was about 20-30 KTs, but Ali might remember more accurately.
Rod Boone Hi Rod, thank you so much for your comment! (I rent it btw and am not the owner.) As far as the wind, I honestly don't remember but 20kts sounds about right.
"From Toronto to London" -my first thought was whoa that plane's got some serious range!
"a local flight" lol
Ali did an awesome job explaining the Garmin display during the approach. Great job cool video bad ass airplane
Thanks from all of us Ali ! That was an awesome experience !! KRSW
Thanks Bruce!
I have 19 years old and I'm a private pilot from Brazil and I manage to become an professional pilot in the near future ;)... I'm just telling it because it's important for me to show to you how much those videos can be fun and helpful for people all around world... Keep up the good work!!! The experiences that you are sharing are just amazing from begginer pilots like me. (sorry for english failures i'm still studing it)
Eudes Malemene Awesome thanks, and good luck with your training!
I love how the runway is parallel to the city skyline and you have this amazing view while the rolling take off! Greetings from Italy!
Wonderful, as usual, thanks.
Yes, I like the Diamonds, I was fond of the diesel-powered DA42 when I first saw it at ILA 2004, and I did most of my flight training on the DA20-C1 (which came out in 1998).
The video that made me want my IR the most was this: Big Bear Take Off+ Flight (Part 1) . The sheer beauty of breaking out of the clouds on top to then cancel IFR and go VFR-on-top ...
In practice it'll be a while before I can afford and justify the additional training, which I estimate will cost about as much as the entire PPL training.
Great job bringing the Canadian context. Clear skies!
Greased it in there 👍
The Diamond Da Twins are truly elegant. One of my favorite airplanes, as for many others I see!
Those shots of Toronto airport are so cool. Great video,
DocsOn APlane Awesome thanks! And check out some of my other videos for even better aerial views of Toronto!
Great video guys. I live not to far away from the London airport. That was cool to see the ILS approach. I also worked on the Porter terminal at City Center while I was apprenticing for my Electrical license. Thanks for this video. Well done.
Keith Burr Glad you enjoyed it Keith!
Awesome, Steve! You keep rising to new levels! These are now TV-show quality; better start shopping...
Sting Flight Thanks Sting!
Just want to tell you how much I enjoy your video's. I no longer fly due to health restrictions. I learned to fly in a 46 Aeronca Champ so your taildragger video's really bring back a lot of memories and now these make me wish I had taken some IFR training of which I did not. Just want to say thanks! Bill
351bwhite Thanks Bill! I glad to share and be a part of your reliving some memories! I have a ton of awesome tail wheel stuff coming - it's been a crazy fun adventure to learn to fly these planes, and I'll be sharing all of it.
Great vid! I finally got my IFR this Tuesday! Took me a lot of time and money but so glad I got it! Thanks Chops!
Stephen Youngblood Awesome! Congrats!
Beautiful flight through the *Canyons of Cloud!*
This channel just gets better and better! Great work! Excited to see the extra 300L. Thats a cool plane!
RC MADNESS Thanks! And yes the Extra 300 video is going to be epic - it will be an equally epic amount of work to edit, so I am waiting until I have the time to really sink my teeth into it :)
Sweet video Chops!!
BlackdogRRT Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Watched 2 minutes and I already know I'm hooked for the next 17. These are getting better! Keep it up!
Ryan Symancek Thanks so much for this comment! I was really struggling with the decision to let this one run nearly 20 minutes, but it is really tightly edited, and awesome information that I wanted to share - I just couldn't find anything else to throw away - glad you felt the same.
Man that's an awesome plane. Got my PPL out of CYXU, now at CPR5. Awesome channel, glad I found it.
One Of the best flight chops videos! thoroughly enjoyed all of it :)
This is 822SA owned by Skill Aviation in Waukegan, IL. I got my multi-engine rating in that airplane. Sweet video!
Great video buddy! That was very informative and I was actually glued the whole time..... well done.
OZ AV8TR Very cool! thanks! I am hesitant to make videos this long (20 minutes is the upper limit) but I just couldn't justify making this one any shorter :)
What a sports car that Diamond is! Also, I really like the smart WX decisions. Well done.
Thoroughly enjoyable video. Can't wait to see your instrument rating training. Nice work as usual FlightChops.
Carmelo Giannino Thanks so much! and a big thanks to Ali for making this flight awesome.
Great idea to split screens! I enjoyed it very much :)
Greetings from Germany!
Manfred
Indigo Filme Thanks! It is so cool to hear that these videos are being enjoyed all over the world!
Awesome work, and good CRM to both of you,So Glad you done this flying, accompanied with the Dentist,pilot,joker.. Keep reading you IFR books and post more of this great Stuff, Congrats Pal
stealhty1 Thanks! I'm gonna get back into IFR this winter - I'm distracted having too much fun tail wheel flying this summer :P
Love how you explain everything, very informative for a non pilot like myself interested in becoming one.
As a pilot you all did a great job on this movie. I like the instructional information delivered to the questions asked. The pilot shows great skills in handling the airplane and the sytems. Nice job. Keep up the vids. I will be watching and subsribing. Frank
aflyingiwillgo Awesome - thanks Frank!
aflyingiwillgo Thank you Frank for your kind comment!
Wonderful!
Worth the 20 min watch too.
Enjoyable to have commentary to explain what's going on instead of just video with comms.
A different experience.
Happy to be subbed to you
Michael Carr Aersome! Glad you liked it! I work hard to make the videos as immersive and engaging as I can.
***** After seeing that I think you use Vegas Pro, and recently getting this program, I understand the dedication and time involved in making a good production. You do so much more though.
Michael Carr Thanks! It is a fair bit of work to edit some of the more epic videos like this one (I actually spent 3 days cutting this one) but it is worth it when the feedback is so great :)
I use Final Cut Pro, but I think Vegas Pro has similar features...
***** Yeah it might. Takes similar length to render, too.
The feedback is worth it, your videos are worthwhile.
awesome video Steve.. loved it
Keith Vander Wees Thanks! as a non pilot, did you find this one too geeky and hard to follow at times? I'm trying to strike a balance, but this one was pretty technical in places, eh?
***** not geeky or too hard to follow at all but then again even as a non pilot I find all of this very interesting.
That is just one of the dreams of many pilots.
+Paul Bevillard yup :)
+Paul Bevillard it is mine haha, but you have to start in the Diamond 20 so that is where I am at :P but almost certainly one day!
@ 14:27
VLE (flying with the gear our) for the DA42 is 194 KIAS.
Gear extension can occur at 194 KIAS or below.
Gear retraction can occur at 156 KIAS or below.
VNE is 194 KIAS, so he's basically right to say you can drop the gear whenever, as long as you're below red-line (which you should always be under red-line).
+aviatortrevor Yeah, but in reality that is the same as the Vne Speed ;)
andydodd11 Huh?
I've only just gotten my PPL, but I can't wait to experience this in the future! Great video mate, you really transfer your enthusiasm to the viewer.
MyAviationAdventure Thanks so much! I'm glad you feel the enthusiasm translated well; that's definitely what I was going for :)
What an awesome video
Haha, your face at 5:04, like a kid on Christmas morning :)
ejleipold Yup - and it was my birthday that day - it was serious good times all around :)
Awesome video man looks amazing cant wait to get IFR rated!
Beautiful views! It's a very nice aircraft, and flying it through Toronto's clouds seems to be a great experience, it reminded me to Rush's YYZ song!
Hey I'm 15 and when i graduate from high school i think I'm going to Seneca College in Toronto to get my pilots licence and work my way up to the big commercial jets. By the way I live in London and its nice to see a youtuber living so close to home. Anyways love the videos, keep up the great content! -Cam
Hey Steve. Great video. I know it’s a little old but put love the Diamond aircraft. I just passed my PPL and wanted to thank you. Your videos have been an inspiration.
Amazing! It's like a mini dash 8! It's fast and reliable;) IFR flying is amazing, I love cloud surfing. I saw that very briefly on board a United Airlines 777, the speed is really shown that close to the clouds!! Good luck with your IFR progress!
UNITED38Heavy --- EWR - SWF - LGA Planespotting Thanks!
Great video as always and sweet plane! I'm about to get checked out in a DA40 with a G1000 here within a couple of weeks. Looks about the same but with 1 less engine. Went with a buddy in it through the Rocky Mountains a couple weeks ago. That's another wonderful flying experience much like cloud surfing. Its Incredible! =)
Great Video Love the Diamond Twin!
Nice job Steve. Looks like all too typical southern Ontario weather.
A few things. 1st this is an awesome video. I've loved your previous videos but there is a definite improvement lately since your rebranding. It's more like watching an aviation tv show now. 2nd, this so reminds me of my first time in the clouds. Clouds were heavy but there was no rain and wind was fairly low so we had a pretty smooth flight, all I could think of as I zigged and zagged through the towering columns was, "THIS is why we fly."
Thank you for sharing.
privatepilotlife Awesome! Glad you liked it! and yes - THIS is why we fly :)
Awesome video, Great flight and pilot and you guys made good decisions. I would love to fly that plane...Also good luck on the IFR test
i like this video because it really shows how you plainly enjoy flying, even tho you have been flying for many years you still seem to get very excited about it. i met a f16 fighter pilot while getting a hair cut once and after talking to him about flying he left me with a bummed out feeling, he said it was boring flying jets and well its nice to see people get excited about it is all.
***** Yeah, it doesn't get old from where I am standing (a weekend warrior private pilot only flying for fun)... But I can see how some one who worked so hard for so long to get to a point to fly military fighters may have lost some of the luster...
Loving these videos man, keep the good work up.
wille1811 Glad you liked it! I'm happy to share.
Man I love this video. Every time I feel a bit down on all of the book work I watch this video and remind myself of the end goal.
Thanks for this video- it was really motivation to get my IR :) I fly a DA-40. I've never flown a 42, but in this video it seemed so familiar. Perhaps even "easier" to fly with that ECU!
Good job guys
DA40 and DA42 are really nice planes to fligh, they are safe and easy to handle. You should try it sometime.
Love the DA42 man, thanke for the post!
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your IFR training videos!
Really like the split screen format
Awesome vids, I can't wait until I have enough money to start working towards a license. Over 15 years of sim flying but have yet to be at the controls of a real aircraft.. vids like these are what keep me excited.
Lion Glad to share, and you should give flying a real one a try - your sim back ground will help with a lot of the theory.
***** I've planned on it since I was a kid, just need to finish university first. But I should at least go for a discovery flight or something soon.. I'm actually planning on moving out to the GTA, I'm from Calgary.
Lion drop me a line when you are in the GTA! maybe we can fly together.
Great video! Doing my IR trainng this fall, starting in october. Now you got me even more excited about it :)
Staffan Ström right on! and yes, this experience helped remind me what all the book work I was doing was ultimately leading toward.
***** So you're done with IR-theory, just the practical training left?
Cool video. Just started my IFR training last week. Lesson 6 tomorrow already, getting it done ASAP :)
AAAWWEEESOME!!! Now I feel more excited to learn more and some day became an IFR rated pilot :D Saludos from santiago de chile and keep doing some great videos dude, I really aprecciate your hard work on doing this material :D
Nicolás Aqueveque So glad you enjoyed it! and comments like these help keep me motivated when the edit sessions for these videos turn out to be more epic than I planned :P
3:05 Always descending via rate (VS) mode is a dangerous blanket statement. If assigned a speed or descending via a STAR, the pilot who doesn't want to be violated will be descending via FLC for precision speed control
The spirit of that is to remember to not make the mistake of climbing by rate (VS) instead of indicated airspeed.
Cannot wait to finish ground school and start my flight training in a few months and fly the Twinstar later this year.
A late good luck.
Awesome video, i want more of this!
kilik92 coming up! I am getting back into IFR training soon and have some good ideas as to how to cover the lessons and make engaging videos.
Super video! Having started with IFR training myself, but not yet actually doing it in real life yet as we do the first 40 IFR hours in a C172 Frasca sim, this was a great video for me to watch! Doing my ME in a DA-42 aswell, so that was also interresting to watch. Bottom line, great video man! Keep it up (as usual) :)
Eric Lund Awesome! Thanks Eric!
Nice video. One point I'd like to get a opinion from someone who uses a Garmin on many approaches. On an approach, sometimes selecting "vectors to final" eliminates some of the outer depicted fixes on the GPS MF display. I've seen and heard of pilots being vectored to a fix that wasn't indicated because the "vectors to final" selection assumed the controller would have vectored them to a closer IAF. However, If you select the full approach with a far waypoint, all of the fixes will be shown on the display and you thus won't be surprised and have to go through the trouble of entering the approach again. If you are busy, it can get very confusing. Of Course, having the Foreflight or Garmin Pilot Apps with geo- referencing on your approach plate can be a big help. Has anybody been caught off guard by selecting "vectors to final" only to have a controller tell you to fly to a fix that wasn't indicated on the flight display? This is why I don't recommend using "Vectors to final". Does anybody have a better reason, other than declutter, why it "Vectors to final" should be used? I'd be interested in knowing why. Thanks in advance. DPA
Great Video as always FlightChops! There are two major hurdles to clear when you get your IFR rating. The first is the rating itself, and the second is building up the courage to fly into IMC without your CFI sitting next to you. I haven't cleared the second one yet, lol. Still waiting for that perfect thin layer. Good luck with your training!
The great thing about the IMC rating here in the UK (now called the IR (R) ! :)
Got to go cloud surfing in a Cessna Citation sitting in the right seat with our family friend and it was by far the most fun I've had in an airplane.
good to watch plus informative too
Mike Walling Glad you enjoyed it Mike!
Just got my Commercial Multi in the DA 42-NG! Awesome airplane. Also this pilot is quality
7:40 active sky + ultimate REX textures
always look forward to your vids, thanks bruh!
Nice as always
Man I love that airplane, So much to learn
Really love your videos Flight Chops! This one is vey cool as I am currently learning to fly on the DA20 and about to go solo when I get my medical.. (Expensive) I love the DA42 and often go down to my local airport -Palmerston North airport in New Zealand- to get a look at the Massey University DA42's do circuits! My dream! :)
Sam Byrne Thanks Sam. And yes, the DA42 was a real pleasure to ride in!
great airplane, and one of the best youtube channels! can't believe i didn't find it before.
By the way i love Twins, and have designed some 3.2 - 2.5 meter span twin aircraft, that are efficient like the diamonds.
lots of benefits to a twin configuration!
Really amazing vid
DA42 diesel is a pretty cool low fuel burn slick looking modern twin, slow though. I'm used to the C55 and it cruises comfortably at 185-190 indicated all day long. I may be a bit biased against the DA42 since I don't physically fit in it either... too tall.
Second time watching, just as good as a rerun. I'll be doing Patreon.soon.
logosi ismyname Very cool! (both regarding enjoying the video twice, and considering joining to crowd funding campaign.) Thanks!
Great video! I watch your vids all the time and love the TwinStar; I thought this was just a typical TwinStar video then I realized this is actually the exact TwinStar, 8SA, that I've flown before from Skill Aviation @ KUGN! What a coincidence. Great plane! Thanks for the vid
I remember I started my training in a 172 with G1000s with integrated autopilot. Then a year later I went for the Instrument and I wanted to fly 6 pack so I got my Instrument rating in a PA-28 with dual VOR and one Garmin 430. What an experience and just overall different flying technology. I am glad I did this, however. I let me commercial rated buddy fly who has only flown G1000's. He said it was almost impossible to shoot approaches compared to flying the G1000s because G1000s and autopilot made everything so easy.
It is truly a nice piece off aeronautical machinery. Ive flown it last week. Ill be doing my multi checkride in it
Beautiful airplane. AOPA Air Safety Institute did a great piece on datalink weather which you need to look at. It's called- accident case study, time lapse.
They also have a communication video called "Say it right! Radio communications in today's airspace."
I really enjoy your enthusiasm and your videos. Some of it, wait, a good portion of it is still over my head, especially with 2 lessons in but I enjoy it just the same.
Don't give up on your IFR !!! Thank you for the quality footage. If your ever in the states, specifically NJ, look me up. My little airport that I'm training out of is KMJX.
William Fence Thanks! Happy training!
Great video! I am flying the Da-42 TDI tomorrow. What is so NG about this airplane actually? :) That Ipad is new for me, I just have to fly with the paper version haha!
Mascaralicious Awesome - and Ali will have to answer about the NG thing - I'm not sure.
***** The main difference is the Austro engines on the DA42-NG and the increased HP, speed, etc. More important than the increased performance is the fact that TDI engines' (TAE Centurion 2.0) parent company (Thielert) went out of business and my understanding is that there were (and maybe still are?) a lot of warranty/support issues with those TDI models. Cheers...Ali
Wauw, thank you both, that explains a lot!
IFR Rating definitely has its benefits. I had planned a month in advance to take a day off and fly to Atlantic City to see the Thunderbirds and the airshow. The weather in the morning was a low broken to overcast that was forecast to gradually lift a bit. I wound up driving to the airport waiting for the forecast to update and make a decision. Would not have been able to go comfortably VFR, but the weather allowed me to shoot above the clouds in between layers and get some nice views. It even cleared enough once we got down there to bypass the approach and go visual. Not as well produced as your videos, but some cool cloud shots. Paramus Flying Club - Caldwell to Atlantic City
Josh Langweil Thanks for sharing your story - I will check out that video when I have a minute - just packing up to go flying today! :)
Great video mate - really inspiring, thanks for sharing :)
Hi. I have watched some of your vids and really enjoy them. Not much on tv so I find real things to watch. I have been a paraglider pilot in the rockies near Lake Louise Alta. for more than 20 years and recently started flying powered paragliders, a trike set up actually. keep up the great work and thanks for the awesome ride alongs. cheers from Golden B.C. (:
jerry delyea Thanks Jerry!
I echo the other commenters, great video, I am originally from Montreal so I have been to all the places you fly, although I have only flown around Montreal and Ottawa myself, many many moons ago.
Mad flying skills and mad video production and editing skills! Also, I like the sunglasses. Maui Jim?
Clayton Wells Thanks, I owe a big thanks to Ali for this awesome flight! He is a solid IFR pilot and it was a pleasure to edit his footage. The glasses are Serengeti velocity actually - and I love 'em - I have two pairs - the others are polarized. (for use when on approach if the sun is low, and for fishing :)
Yes he seemed very smooth, very proficient.
Fishing? How do you have time to fly, edit amazing video, and fish? ;)
Clayton Wells Thank you guys, I appreciate it!
My first solo was in a DA20, good plane
Another top notch video. My request would be to see some of your IFR training flights with approaches, etc. I'm in the middle of my IFR rating right now and have to admit the GPS is my biggest challenge. My age is showing!
Stephen Robinson I hear that! And I will definitely be sharing IFR training videos showing me struggle through hold entries and procedure turns :)
V.nice video. Cant wait to be in the air again ))
So cool!
Great video! I did my primary training in the DA-20 fun plane. A DA-42 rental? That's pretty nice. Taking a Diamond back to London. Is that like a Piper flight back to Lock Haven?
Tony Fletcher Yeah it was an awesome flight - too bad we couldn't stop for lunch. Will have to go back :)
