    I bought a used pair of 700s off ebay for a good price, about $300. I love 'em, I don't think they sound weird at all. I love the way they soundstage and the detail is fantastic.

      I have HD700's too with an Audiolab Mdac. Have had this setup for 2 years. Very pleased. I wear mine for many hours at a time at the desk, and they are way more comfortable than the 6-series from Sennheiser. At least for a guy with a big head.

      Immortal imaging is great with the big soundstage. For some reason, it’s easier for me to pinpoint footsteps with the 700’s rather then 800’s

    Just got my Sennheiser HD650s and they are incredible. They are my first audiophile headphones so I probably can't tell how good they really are but I still think they and amazing! Also, this is a very good channel. Glad I found it early.

      Thanks! Yes the HD650 is one of those headphones that gets better and better with every amp you use. I know people who use HD650s with $10k amps and they still find details they can't hear with other headphones.

    You say everyone will tell you the hd650 are the benchmark, but honestly, this is the first time I hear that...what I hear everybody say is the hd600 are the benchmark, with the 650 being a "wow" sounding version of the 600, at the expense of neutrality, speed, and realism.

    • @lumntoob999
      @lumntoob999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Danilo Bonina only at the expense of neutrality not the speed or naturelness, I own both, and I also think it all depends on what driver is in the 600/650 in question, the newest silver driver 600&650 sound identical except a little more mid bass on the 650. Mine are both the newer silver versions and I think the 650 actually has better detail and speed, could just be my ears or my exact headphones because there is variances between units.

    Superb comparison and characterizations! Had the HE-400 for a while and gave to my nephew, you're spot on the description of them, they're amazing with that wow factor - and strangely for me, comfortable.
    However, I'm with you on the Sennheiser's, though in my case the HD 600; to me the, they are just *the* headphones and I go back to as my reference point. Comfort, sound, everything about them, I love.
    And then finally, the HD 700 - they're next on my list to get. I've read enough about them and yes, they're polarizing, but I strongly suspect I will like their sound - but not to replace my HD 600, but rather to complement them, for certain styles of music.

    Have you ever messed with a Schiit Jotunheim? Picked up a pair of HD-650s, and my sound card just isn't cutting it. It's more or less identical-sounding to a Magni 2 Uber in terms of the sound output. I was considering a Dark Voice 336SE as I know tubes and HD650s are a tight match, but I've read the tubes aren't happy when they get 6 to 8 hours of use a day.

    *Thanks for this review.* There is a lot to comment and to mention while listening to this review. For now let me let people know that it depends (also) on source file, how it was recorded!, which format its saved, and of course AMP plays a big role. If I may add, *once I tried the HD800S I couldn't enjoy the HD650. I tried the Focal Clear for 2 weeks, something about the Focal Clear that is much more vibrant above all mentioned above, but I chose the HD800S since I want the separation of sound and clean, but some recordings will sound almost dead on the HD800S while the Focal Clear makes it all alive and good.* I am still looking to have the Focal Utopia!.. BTW, Sennheiser HD820 is not worth its prize for sound wise, unless isolation with good headphones is a must, and it is not real (full) isolation while its sound is not having the specialty of the HD800/S.

    hey man, I really liked this comparison. if you don't mind, I have a question. I have a pair of ATH-M50X with BrainWaivez angled pleather pads, ATH-AD900X with HiFiMan valeur pads, and HD 598 SE; but I also own a pair of Genius speakers that I have adjusted to neutral base and increased highs. I watch a lot of anime and listen to different types of music. I love how the ATH-AD900X really bring out the highs and the female vocals. would you recommend I get the HD 650 if I just wanted an all around good pair of headphones for general music listening and movie watching? I have enough to buy the ATH-AD2000X, but Zeos claims that those favor highs, so I started looking into the HD 650. thanks for any help in advanced.

    Been through two HD650s. One of my favourites. They are some of the best headphones for the price - a great reference. I have a LCD2 otherwise I would have kept the 650s. Probably will get another sometime again. :)
    Recently acquired the HD700s and technically, they are on another level than the 650. They are so much more transparent, and you feel like you are listening in a large room space. I can see where there may be problematic for some people, depending on music preferences.
    One thing about the 650, is that they aren't quite accurate on their top end. But because of their pleasing nature, you may not notice.
    The HD700 It takes a bit to get used to. I agree that it has that strange something up top, but really its that extra bit that bring the best recordings to life. I'm still new to the HD700, and I will admit they fatiguing. It is a trade off. You would get fatigued listening to the real instruments live as well. Most consumer cans are attenuated to be inoffensive but also less accurate. We get used to that sound, then you hear the HD700 and it can seriously sound wrong.
    HD700 Brilliant for the finest dynamic recordings of classical, jazz, and even electronic. Also, the HD650s are great for binaural recordings, very natural and relaxed. But the Hd700 becomes simply holographic.
    Great presentation btw. Subbed

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the HD700. I think they get a lot more hate than the should. Their sound signature can be a bit harsh compared to normal cans I agree but it comes with the territory.

      Are the hd650 good with classical music? Or worth paying more for hd700 for much more returns?

    • @malfunkt
      @malfunkt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ohnonate while some may prefer the HD600 as they are a bit more neutral, you can easily adjust to the warmer tone of the 650. It has a very special, sweet yet natural high-end. As long as you are okay with a bit more mid bass and lower midrange bloom/warm they are fantastic for classical music.
      The HD700 are more an acquired taste and overall are less accurate. They will sound much more spacious but a bit more artificial. I recommend sticking with the either HD650/6XX,600, HD660S (my current set) or HD560S. Also try experimenting with headphone spatial dsp to get a more speaker like representation of the soundstage. I’ve owned HD800 and Focal Utopia both excellent for classical but after many years I’ve paired back to the HD660S and iems. I’m more than happy now to listen to lower cost iems and headphones. So if you want great technical quality for a low price iems are where it’s at. Low cost planar iems are fantastic for classical especially sets like the Tin Hifi P1 Max and there are some great hybrids to look out for such as Kiwi Ears Quintet, balance armature sets such as Truthear Hexa to the very cheap but effective single dynamic drivers like the 7Hz Zero.

I still remember how disappointed I was when I tried the Beats in-ear headphones. Do you think, is there anyway that the HD700 might disappoint me like how the Beats did? Hey! Just discovered this video. Great job. Question. I have hd6xx. Running through a dragonfly red. You mention how you can keep getting more out of these depending on your set up. Could you recommend a dac/amp that would be a good step up from the very capable dragonfly that would reveal more of the hd650 ? Running through my surface book 2 at present. Thanks so much!

    Have you tried the HD700s with a different EQ? There were some different presets I found at head-fi using EquilizerAPO that really changed the sound.

    I am completely knew to this, and I am just wondering if I have a DAC/AMP( Modi2U/Magni2U ) and listen to music Pandora/Spotify on my headphones ( HD650 ) will it sound better than other desktop gaming headphones ( TurtleBeach A40TR MixAmp, Logitech G930 ), or will I have to listen to high fidelity recordings to notice a difference?

    • @DMS3TV

  • @redrum801
    @redrum801 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video man ! I wish you continued success on the channel , loved these last 2 !! Ive only been able to rock my hd700 with a old fiio e5 I had paired up with my se535 but I think your spot on when you say that with certain genre's there really nice . I've read some people say the bass was lacking but I think it's pretty good , it not boomy but I think there's plenty of impact depending on what your listening to .
    With that said I'm kinda torn on whether to keep them or return them and try out the 650 and put the savings toward a decent amp/dac . So far I've looked at the fulla2 , magni uber/modi uber-multibit , little dot mk2 and the Oppo ha2se . The Oppo is on the list because most nights after work I'm not gonna want to get out my recliner to hit a switch or turn a knob lol . Hopefully mass drop announces before my thirty days are up that the 6xx is going back up and I can have both :) which amp or combo do you think matches up best with the hd700 ?

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the hd700 I would recommend something warm. I personally got the Asgard 2 to match my HD-700. With that in mind though amps like the asgard 2 don't work well with headphones like the HD650 if you ever plan on switching. Also I would say modi/magni isnt really worth it for the price. For slightly more you could have an NFB-11 from audio-GD. Now with all that said my top recommended combo is the HD-650 and NFB-11. Its not cheap but its a match made in heaven.

    Great vid makes my purchase of the hd6xx more confidant going for the Schiit fulla 2 next week you said the he400 are harder to drive and sounds not clear past half on the fulla is it the same with the 650's on the fulla?

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Woo! The point where the fulla 2 distorts is almost uncomfortably loud on the HD650s so I wouldn't worry too much about that. With the HE-400 since they are so hard to drive its easier to hear the distortion threshold (which is still very minor distortion).

    Nice to see your channel (and being nice to the widely hated hd700). Keep up the good work. What speaker would you say to be a step up from the hd650? And what cables are you using on the 650!
    All planars have large changes in sound with enclosures.. It's the nature of their driver structure! There's an industry that takes 200$ t50rp, redesigns their enclosures, makes some equalization to the same drivers and sell them for 1000$. And the thing is people find the sound worth the money. Planars are something you can definitely go crazy experimenting with!.
    You cannot go wrong with the hd650s - My favorite quote of the video! The more I see these videos the more I want to upgrade my hd598 (which already sound quite amazing to me)

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot! I actually use a cheap amazon cable with my HD650s since I use them in the studio so much. I wouldn't want a nice cable to get damaged. That being said instead of getting a more expensive pair of headphones than the HD650 I would rather someone get a nicer amp. The thing about HD650s is that they scale in quality with nicer and nicer amps. I've even seen people with $10k in their amp and source using HD650s as their only headphones.
      Oh! and on the subject of planars since you mentioned them, the Monolith M560 video is uploading as we speak!

If I need to buy separate amp dac and buy 1 at a time so I can get better stuff that's ok to. Also I'm fine with used gear as well. I just cant spend more than $300 for either the amp or dac individually and I'd rather be around $400 for the total if I can.

    I have the HD650's and I love them. How much more detail can you really hear with the HD700's? Would you say its worth it to have them both? ( My set up is Aune X1s DAC and Aune X7s Class A Amp).

    • @andtothewestamerica
      @andtothewestamerica 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The difference is pretty substantial. The thing is that "detail" doesn't always equal quality. In stock form, HD650's have that really natural sound quality that makes an acoustic guitar sound just like an acoustic guitar. Stock HD700's have WAY more soundstage, layers and "detail" but sometimes that detail can make things sound exaggerated and less real and natural. I had them and found them incredibly exciting but also fatiguing and much less generally likable than 650's. I feel like if you put 650's on someone's head they are going to comment on how good the music sounds and if you put 700's on someone's head they're going to comment on how good the headphones sound.
      There are now several mods available which offer options for improving the peaky-ness and un-naturalness of the 700's. I just got another pair (because someone offered them to me for $225) and even the simplest mod has made them much better. For me, it's like a exciting flavor of ice cream that you keep in the freezer because sometimes you just want pretzel-peanutbutter-mocha but you probably won't eat it everyday.

    Do you really think the HD650 is more comfortable than the Beyerdynamic line such as the DT880 or T90? I made my HE400 a little more comfortable by adding a thick piece of weatherstripping to the bottom of the headband and using J-money natural leather ear pads (similar to yours). But I agree, I'm looking for something new due to the comfort. I also have an after market cable but still, the cable's placement is another point of discomfort.

I was torn between this and the 650, but the 400i was available for $250 on Amazon again this week and I couldn't resist (plus since I am using Fidelio X2s ATM, I was curious to try a planar). They are supposedly coming back into stock on Monday and scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday. Several third party dealers have them at this ridiculously low price (with Prime and fulfilled by Amazon; the Hifiman site lists them as authorized dealers) I am just hoping they are legitimately new as stated and not repackaged returns or very old stock with the F connectors.

      HD650 due to comfort and their warm, neutral, lush sound signature. Then get the he400i down the road. He400i has a tighter faster planer magnetic sound. It really depends on your preference. Go to some stores and try them out first if you can. By now I know that I prefer a more warm sound signature. My ears are a bit sensitive to higher frequencies.

    The veil of the 650 killed them for me.
    I got the 600 the day after.
    I had the HE-400, but the highs have something really weird in there that I eventually could not stand anymore (fatigued me to the point of mild tinnitus).
    The HD-700 Were great... as long as the wrong treble did not show up.
    So I settled for a HD600+LCD2+Beyer 660.
    LCD2 for most music. HD600 for gaming (short gaming id use lcd2 still but they are too heavy for long periods) and DT 660 for classic. The DT 660 smokes out the LCD2 and the HD600 in air instruments.
    I realy wish the LCD 2 was lighter. Id love to play some of my games with it... its just not possible for longer than 40 minutes without breaks.
