    Hello!. I',m an audiophile of Mendoza, Argentina and I enjoy watching your videos and your way of explaining issues of the vintage audio. The equipments are fantastic and really see you like this as much as me. So, congratulations !! (PS: I like Gal Costa too!!)

    Still got a pair of these from 1978.....
    Through the years I had to replace one faulty tweeter and glue the pvc edges of the woofers.
    They still sound great...Never use the two tone knobs though.
    The full bass sound was ideal for the rock and reggae (dub) music I played.The somewhat dry top wood needs a bit of furniture wax. I payed around 900 Dutch guilders for the pair, in 1978, which now would be (without inflation) around €480.00
    Don't play vinyl anymore but they still perform great with music from the hard drive.

    Nice video. Just wanted to say, those speakers you mentioned your friend having back in 1975-'76 may have been the Wharfeda SP series, which was introduced in '75. This was Wharfedale's return to high-end after their brief foray into mid-fi territory (which happened as a result of their parent company's purchase of Leak in '69 because they felt it was a bad idea owning two competing high-end speaker brands at the same time and decided to change Wharfedale into a mid-fi/upper-mid-fi brand, a change that was completed by 1971 with the W*0E models). Some of the SP models were the Airedale SP, Dovedale SP, Linton SP, etc. These were very-high-quality.
    You're in Europe, I assume? Here in the states, we had the W*0 models. I have 2-way alnico W60's, which are about the size of the Large Advent and KLH Five, plus I have early, alnico, dual 3-way W90's, which are at least as big as a 4x12 Marshall cabiinet (like the ones Jimi Hendrix used with his Marshall amps). Both are really-nice speakers.

    That’s a lovely cartridge you have. I have a Gal Costa Lp from the early 70s Tropicalia. Another great video Andrew.

    I've always liked these Wharfedale E-50s! They were more musical than my JBL L-166 I ended taking home. For if it wasn't for the price I got the 166, my clear choice was the E-50s! They were just more transparent than the JBL L-166 to me.

    Pricewise, originally, these would likely have been about the $900-$1100 range, if I had to guess, based on the price of the TOTL E90, which was about $2200-$2400 (street price). The E*0 series was high-end and quite-expensive. They were designed to be efficient, tube-friendly speakers.

    Sometimes we feel lack of bass...in the reality speaker may be playing with too much treble or midrange..... reducing it you may fix....have three ways; .increase bass in tone controls, reduce treble in tone control or to decrease treble into the speaker.

    • @vintagestereo
      @vintagestereo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Carlos Mergulhão you are wright again. I wish that every amp ore receiver was made with bass, mid an treble knobs because i often miss that mid control on them, I believe for the perfect amp a mid control is a good thing

    Very nice speakers with good sound detailed and clear with perhaps some less bass but it brings out Gal Costa amazing voice and music, one of the most famous brasil music of al o times

    Their lack of bass is the price you pay for their high efficiency. I had a pair of E70s bigger brother to the E50s. Sound much the same with more bass. They were also ridiculously efficient and will go stupid loud. I eventually got rid of them because the sound while very dynamic and detailed, for me is ultimately too bright and fatiguing, definitely some harshness creeping in the highs. But they'd make a great speaker for rockers and dance parties. They definitely sound their best with a mellow balanced front end and amp.

      @vintagestereo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      socksumi WOw,thanks man, I wish I had your words in my mouth when filming this set because it is exactly how you describe. Detailed but I also missed something, Plenty highs an treble but the sound is a bit too clean for me, hospital sound, big hall sound without the echo effect.

    Quite bright. I presume these are very flat, hence the lack of "body" or "bass" as you call it. 150 bananas are too much. And yes, I do agree the Kef's sound a lot better.

    • @vintagestereo
      @vintagestereo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CofeeAuLait yes idd very flat, although the tweeters go only to 18,000 hz the treble is very nice. if the e70 and e90 where not so expensive I would review them...maybe one day i can score a cheap set of those......

    probeer eens de speakers/of andere speakers 10 centimer vanaf de hoeken van de kamer te spelen (dus 2 speakers ,elk in een hoek) dan krijg je een fantastisch acoustisch effect.

    I saw the video where you made nice comparison...you really know how to make it.... seems to me you decide to use FM radio as this is more usual...more simple and more realistic related what people uses in their homes

    • @vintagestereo
      @vintagestereo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carlos Mergulhão I think I am old fashion. most of the time my radio is on, just on my cable antenna with a 256kb quality, I am not sure, but many people now-days just use a tablet to play their flacs, mp3's ore just internet radio. Cd's are out because a tablet is more easy to use. Turntables are hot these days because they sound better as cd's. But for most people, records are too expensive. Music is free on the net , so why buy records? Only the real audiophiles buy records ore dj's who need records for the better mix possibilities records have over cd's. I am not a audiophile. If I was a audiophile I would invest in very expensive speakers and setup. Yes I like better sound, the better the sound the more I enjoy music. I could not enjoy music with the b&o sound my mother have, although that set costed her 6000 euro in 2001! I had a maximum price tag from 200 euro for the speakers. I think I have to double that to 400 euro's for my hunt to the perfect sounding speaker. I don't give up, one day I will succeed in my hunt for the perfect(cheap) speaker. And if I found out later that even 400 euro is not enough I will increase until I find them. Until that time comes I just enjoy hunting for speakers, amps and receivers and making my video's.

    Reasonable review, but that terrible Dutch accent......!
    Does a woofer have a "rubber rand"???? Please use a dictionary if you don't know the correct word!
    You probably mean "edge" or "surround".
    I also own a pair or of E50's and I gave them full service before use.
    I found a completely loose spider on one of the woofers and I replaced the (bipolar) electrolytic capacitors on the filter boards.
    Degradation of the film capacitors is not very likely, so I did not replace them.
    Furthermore I also replaced the input terminals by something better than the originals, which looked rather cheap.
    Now I enjoy the great sound of these great speakers.
