I brought a plant and the guy who owned the garden centre said not to buy it as it’s a invasive plant - why sell it then I thought. Anyway…I love it! It’s big, blousy and busty like an old school matron and I’m going to get another two plants for the back corners of my yard. Yes, it a pain and yes, it does require a little bit more attention when the seed heads droop or die or when the leave turn yellow…al that means is I get more time in my yard and less housework🤣👍🏼 The structure of the leaves are of interest in my rather lacklustre garden…my hubby suffers from hay fever. My one plant has grown into three and they are gorgeous 🥰
Thank you this was what I was doing with mine. It just keeps coming back.Actually you cant kill this plant with a chain saw. But it does make a stunning display when its flowering.
I've had acanthus mollis growing in deep shade for 40 years. My single plant is now 3 stately plants. Hardly what I'd call "invasive" and I'm grateful for each of them. If you're not going to be planting it in a shady area put it in a pot. It's a gorgeous plant.
I'd say that's a reasonable response to an extreme condition, similar to what I do in my tiny garden with verbascums and anemone japonica: just take of the leaves at the base, and leave the more vase shaped leaves to look graceful. Could leave most of the leaves and take off the basal flat ones, in a smaller setting. And before it got so huge!
I had one in a pot and planted it but a few weeks later realised it was in a bad spot Dug it up and moved it These things just grow from the tiniest root I now have 4 seperate plant in 4 seperate places One pop up where I removed it in the first place Another bit popped up where i have my pots for sowing Another bit popped up a few meters away from where I replanted it when I was moving it the first time It’s feral!
In Portugal we find them in several environments. In the forest they protect the environment from fires. I also see them in abandoned woods in the heart of Lisbon. Are beautiful.

I bought an acanthus whitewater last week, planting it tomorrow. This is very useful, thank you.
Another spectacular choice for a shade garden.
It is invasive! It is beautiful but can take over very quickly.

Thank you! Would the same apply to Acanthus Spinosa?
Thank you very much. i have just bought 1 plant as i am new to this; I hear the pure whitewater variety is less invasive??

I want acanthus mollis
Thank you. Excellent tip.
i have doubts wheter my plants are acanthus or not , since it has razor sharp leaves on the end
Probably is
Cheers.
Chuck it on the bonfire !! Compost more likely if you must kill this plant.
He's actually just butchered that plant,
He has too many. They spread and multiply fast.
