Are you sure it can be powered via USB? It looks like that port is for updating the converter only. It looks like it needs a 12v connection and I don't think that much power can come through a kind of, outdated Mini-B USB port. I'm actually trying to find a legit way to power this thing via battery...

Mini usb should provide 5v of power. The device needs 12v as you mentioned, so I may have misspoke! The usb is only for updates!
