    Thank you! That was exactly the synopsis I was looking for! Now I know more than enough about all of WD Drives to build not only my high-end home NAS but enough for my business server(s) as well. I also am going to replace the hard drives in my Workstation with some better drives because apparently Black is what I should be using!

    I host a Jellyfin server in a computer at home, I usually keep my medias on a eSSD, but I really think that letting it run for days and days is going to broke it and my half a terabyte library is going to disappear, thanks for that video, I first wanted a Purple (it's suppose to run 24/7 so it was obvious to me) but the Red looks better now, even though it's going to be single and not raid, thanks a lot :)

    So as a media professional should I get black red or gold for my internal non NAS drives? This is confusing, because they all have 5 year warranties (at least RED PRO vs BLACK) , are as fast, and well reviewed.

    • @misatzu
      @misatzu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      for non-nas appliances you should get WD Purple. same reliability as WD Red at a lower price point. 5 year warranty as opposed to 3 year warranty is not worth the heavy premium IMO since a drive that lasts 3 years will most likely also last 5 years or longer. check out my main post about WD Purple!

    • @misatzu
      @misatzu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a bad choice but not a use-specific choice either. They are perfect as backup drives tho. Also you get better reliability and higher warranty than with WD Green or WD Blue at a lower price than WD Red, so with regards to that it's a good choice. So... what's the deal with the (phony ? 😮) book cabinet? At first I noticed some books that look very similar, but when you observe this more closely, obviously with a WD purple built for surveillance, you will notice that the book pattern, so the books in sequence repeat themselves on every shelf. Unless ofcourse, something is wrong with the Raid stripes on my wd purple nas! 😃

      it differs largely. WD Green in the worst case and WD Red if you're lucky. haven't heard about WD Purple in externals yet, but that would be even better. as for color, you often get so-called "white labels" which then are the color that's printed on it.

    3:00 This is exactly why I have been preferring the *WD Purple* as backup drives ever since.
    3:15 It's not "strange" but quite common actually and in this distinct case the natural result of use-specific tuned firmware (and I'm not speaking of write failure tolerance _which is exclusively active when explicitly prompted through limited ATA commands by specialized software_ - a fact that entirely went over the head of all the ill-advised wannabe experts who try to scare potential buyers and urge them against deploying WD Purple for desktop use) which I could confirm myself by observing not[ice]ably higher sustained write transfer rates *and which is why you should have recommended them as backup media to your audience.*
    WD Purple are just as reliable as WD red while running more silent, more smoothly and more energy efficient. You get the same (if not, for non-raid backup purposes, better) performance and the same warranty at a generally lower price point, a no-brainer for anyone _who actually thinks_ about it.

      Tx!

    • @OndrejPopp
      @OndrejPopp 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Then again... after thinking about this for a while, it ocured to me that if you use the btrfs filesystem on your backup drives maybe Purple is not such a great idea after all due to the btrfs administratieve reads (and writes) such as with the btrfs-cleaner... I guess if writes are still dominant during btrfs administration then Purple would still be ok, but if not you may suffer an other performance penalty with btrfs on Purple...

    • @misatzu
      @misatzu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OndrejPoppAgain, when I wrote this two years ago the Purples were just as good for rdesktop use as any other HDD designated specifically for that, if not better at least as the Greens, and barely different from the Reds which I also own and extensively tested it against. Differences in transfer rates and access times were negligible. However, since then things went downhill unfortunately - most Purple are relabeled crap HGST drives now, running so hot that it needs active cooling, making awful clicking noises constantly and rvibrating as hell. That's no defective drive, it's by design ... deeply disappointed with the WD802PURZ, will never buy again. Beware!

    • @OndrejPopp
      @OndrejPopp 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@misatzuOk, tx again! I will then probably go for the Red plus 4TB which costs now 10€ more than the Purple 4TB, although I just need it for my desktop, no Raid Nas, so I would have gone for the Blue, but I guess since everyone is building their NAS servers for their maybe TH-cam video stuff, Red has become much cheaper than Blue...

    • @misatzu
      @misatzu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OndrejPopp Weirdly the Red was slightly less than the Purples last time I bought some, but I still went for the latter because if anything they were running somewhat noticeably more silent (:

      @@h.ibrahimakkus If you're lucky you get an RMA from WD directly anyways ... just check your warranty status on the WD website beforehand:
      a) if it happens to be a retail drive but NOT an OEM drive you get "IN LIMITED WARRANTY" (which sounds kinda bad but is good)
      b) if it is an OEM drive you get "NO LIMITED WARRANTY" (which is bad)
      c) if you get an "OUT OF REGION" status it's worth checking back with WD's customer service and ask for a status change nicely. you would have to provide proof of purchase tho, which in the past worked smoothly but has been a bit rough experience lately. they're not as kind anymore as they used to be, but still way better than any other HDD customer service.
