Solid State Drive (SSD) technology is something that, though once considered out of the reach of the average consumer, is now very, very common. Considerably faster than the much older HDD technology, SSDs are now featured inside almost every commercial technology device that we use today in some large or small form. One of the biggest brands in the world of storage in 2020/2021 is Western Digital and unsurprisingly, they have an impressive selection of SSDs available to buy in their product portfolio. This combined with WD being connected with SanDisk and UltraStar, has resulted in their range of SSDs for sale being incredibly diverse and confusing. So, if you are in the market to buy a new SSD from WD, it can be awfully confusing and you can spend hours trying to narrow down the literal hundreds of SSDs on offer to the right one, losing hours along the way. Never fear, I have taken the time to break down the key product families (WD Blue, Green, Black, Red and Gold) and separated them into what each one is designed for, what each one can do, what it cannot and ultimately help you decide the best SSD for your storage needs. However, before we start, it is worth taking a moment to learn about the key buying factors that affect the performance and suitability of any SSD compared with another.

Good on you for discussing the sales tax in the US. Very often people only think about the sticker price, which viewers from other countries do not often understand is incomplete. So when they convert to their currencies, they may not have the fair figures without the tax. It can make things look cheaper than it actually is. Leading to people crying out about the US advantage.

Robbie, I have a Synology DS-920+ that has 4 x 6 Tb WD Red Plus configured with Synology Hybrid RAID. It's for home home. I will need to start gradually replacing the drives, one at a time, with something a bit larger - probably around 12 - 16 Tb. The issue is that the old drives run at 5400 RPM and have 64 Mb cache. The new drives are 7200 RPM with 256 to 512 Mb cache. Will mixing these drives create much of a problem for me ? I'm not too concerned about optimizing / maximizing throughput and access times ; I'm more concerned about reliability and longevity.

What are your thoughts on using Gold drives in surveillance systems like a Unifi UNVR? Do the Purple Pro drives do anything specific or different that would make them better than using a Gold?

You talk about workload TB per year. Does this include both reads and writes? Is there any way for a user to see how much their drives have done?😊

Between the AI detection on the cameras and the AI detection built in to the nvr software... Somehow i think the purple pro is just marketing buzzwords lol.
"AI" is the most used word in nearly every tech company conference these days afterall
Thank you for the great video!

Looking for some advice, WD4003FRYZ (WD gold) appears decently cheaper WD4005FZBX ( WD black) is there much difference between these drives and would it be fine to use the gold for desktop use, main storage + some larger games etc. likely daily-weekly power up/down

You can use WD Gold no problem. Black's are overpriced because gamers will pay anything for gear that is marketted towards them. And if this is your main storage I would defo go for gold over any other edition due to its reliability.

It is a little painful to see SMR being given an OK for NAS up to 5 bays.... Your 16 April 2020 article seems to contradict this. SMR should not be used in a raid array unless you have a very specific use case. And I thought 8TB and larger Red drives were CMR.

As stated numerous times before - If you are shopping in the "Red Pro" segment, don't. Get enterprise instead for better price and superior performance. Especially higher capacity variants. WD Gold (btw just the the "civilian" branding of Ultrastar) is too expensive though, so don't go there.

Why do you insist on calling them a naZ? There is no Z in it, it is a naS.

If you were expecting it to sound like it ended with an "s" sound, it would have to be nass. Like dumbass.
