Thanks for the memories, I had my intro to cruising in Twister Rosa Royal based out of Rowhedge on the Colne. Still sailing wooden boats 40yrs later

Twisters, one of the boats I considered before marrying my 1979 Nicholson 31. Just a bit more beam in my Nic, for the rest ever so many similarities. Love'em both!

I bought a UK built Twister called Mijo in Darwin in 1986 and sailed her singlehanded to Port Moresby in PNG. Took 28 days non stop for 1200 miles against the tradewinds. Up to 40kts at times. They didn't believe me when I got there that I'd left from Darwin on July 1st...... this was the peak of the windy season. The cabin was falling off the deck ( bad deck to wood join ) so she needed pumping whenever the floor covered or water lapped into wherever I was sleeping !!!

That is a beautiful boat with a besutiful history. The first time I sailed with my dad I was 8 and he was 61 the last time I sailed with him I was 38 he was 91 and still telling me "you're luffing". His famous quote - "any fool can sail a boat when there's wind, it takes a damn good sailor to sail a boat when there's no wind." I miss him.

How wonderful. At 56, with 2 bags on my tummy and not the biggest chap there ever was, i am planning to sail single across the Atlantic to raise spondolies for good causes. I grew up learning to sail to a high standard, so although several decades later, i do have a relationship with sailing boats. My first port of call is to find a boat to "hire" as it were for the crossing. All advice and pointers i have had have resounded "Twister!". To have found this quite glorious vid, so incredibly inspiring for sure. Many thanks for it.

    Beautiful boat and lovely story.
I own a Nic 26' and just watched this at anchor in the Carib. I love long keeled boats, they are a dream to sail singlehanded.

I had Twister of Mersea for about 3 years in the early 90s. Wonderful boat. V quick for her size, especially uphill, and still fast in light conditions which is a tribute to the fairness of her underwater lines. The wooden ones were 27ft 6, and had a slightly deeper keel than the grp hulled ones - and were undoubtedly quicker than the grp hulled ones. By reputation (and results I believe) Cheetah and Twister of Mersea were the quickest of them all. Kim Holmans brother, a professional boat builder, built Twister of Mersea in the west country and on taking her for her first sail phoned Kim (who was east coast based) and sexpressed wonderment - to the effect that she was a rocketship, as Kim then went and proved that season by cleaning up.

What a beautiful little boat, I must be honest I'm a huge fan of long keel boats, especially for off shore cruising, they are sturdy, well mannered and sea kindly, but most importantly they are safe, hove to in a long keel boat is a pleasure compared to some modern production boats, and that beautiful heart shaped traditional transom is a thing of beauty, I recently had a Stan Huntingford designed long keel cutter surveyed, 32' with a 3' bowsprit, unfortunately it wasn't to be

I kept waiting and wanting for the camera to roam thru her to get a len's worth of all the beautiful features.. as it was I had to don a pair of dark glasses in order to withstand the shine of those cabinets ! Nice job in conversation here. I wondering if when Peter was describing the deep connection of his father to every bit and piece if he eventually broke down overwhelmed wot grief at the point the narrative took a dive ini your sound track... ?? Not my business, but I like to know that men like me can fail to go on now and then in describing our dads, that have long ago checked out . Im there ! By he way, a while back a listener complained your little dogs bark was way too loud.. I say good on you little dog.. ager all a small dog is smart to boast a hardy crawl !
