  • In this episode, I take a drive through the former Secret City of Oak Ridge Tennessee where fissile material for the Manhattan Project and U.S. nuclear weapons were produced. I'll also get a chance to hear from Ray Smith and have interspersed his stories throughout the video.
Special thanks to the Outrider Foundation, the Jubitz Family Foundation, and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies for providing funding and support.

My Great Aunt worked there shortly after College when the Manhattan Project was going on. From what I can remember of "her story" she was told that she would be helping the War Effort by Turning Knobs. And well that's what she did lol, she sat on a stool in front of this Terminal with a couple of knobs, and she would adjust them when needed. She didn't realize she was producing "Fuel" for Nuclear Bombs!

My grandad moved up to Oak Ridge from our family farm in Trion, Georgia to work on the project. I wish i had more opportunity to talk with him about their time up there.

Natasha, you and Ray did a nice job of giving an overview of Site X or CEW of the Manhattan Project. One clarification, the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant came on-line in sections called “cases”. So K-25 did enriching uranium during the Manhattan Project. By 1945 the production line was S-50 feeding K-25 feeding the Y-12 Calutrons with enriched “green” oxide sent to Los Alamos. But K25 could not get to high enrichment in those early days. The Calutrons had to do that. It did after the plant was finished after the war. Looking forward to your other videos. Best regards. 0:49

The bill amendment for victims of rad waste exposure passed Senate early in August 2023. Help is coming! Hang in there!
