Since Anki is destroyed before we leave "after Damage Calculation", it does not make it to "end of the Damage Step" in time to activate its search effect. Then, once we reach "end of the Damage Step", Komushroomo goes to the GY due to it being destroyed by battle.

The other cards don't mention themselves. So all 3 of those other cards can still activate and resolve, even if marked for destruction, assuming there are enough legal targets currently on the field. That's why he chose this card instead of Brain Jacker. It makes the question more complicated.

Its crazy that the damage negation situation #2 isnt covered in damage step official rulings. It would be super easy to just officially update the rules so that all effects that reduce damage taken occur just before applying the damage., with nothing else happening in between. ... or something to that effect

I guess the War Rock question right on the basis of something like Flame Wingman, if you attack a FLIP effect monster like Man Eater Bug or Penguin Solider, the burn effect won't trigger if Wingman is Poped or returned to the extra deck.
This is a completely different example. The War Rock would trigger normally here even if it was marked for destruction. The 1 detail that made it unable to trigger is the part of giving extra ATK to other War Rocks you CURRENTLY control. Since she was the only 1 on the field, that specific part could not apply so the entire effect didnt activate. A better comparison would be Sky Striker Hayate or D.D Warrior Lady.
@@babrad The biggest problem with this War Rock ruling is that when compared to the PSCT flow chart, the card should resolve. The card is worded Do "A", then "B". When we look at PSCT A is required for B to happen, but NOT vice versa. So even though you can't gain attack, that card should resolve. Unless I missed a comma, or a recent change to PSCT, I believe this is just a case of BKSS (Because Konami Said So) as it was presented that way in a recent Q&A (that I was unaware that Konami is doing now).

I would like to preface this comment by saying: You're an amazing person for having videos like this and shedding light on some very interesting interactions. None of what I'm about to say about Konami reflects on you and the content you provide. I'd also like to note that I've been a YGO player for roughly 11 years, and a judge for 8 of those years. So I'm not saying this from an ill-informed mindset. Konami's "Judge Program" is an absolute joke, as well as how the company is broken up into 3 main regions. When TomBox had to preface his answer with "Always double check with the HJ, just in case" it infuriated me. There should not be a card game that has a competitive scene with prizes, that does not have a dedicated Comprehensive Rules Book, nor standardized rulings in all 3 regions the game is played. Rulings being different between areas is asinine and should not be a thing. Japan rulings should be law and there needs to be dedicated team to making and share rulings with the masses. There should be no discrepancy, no ruling changes, etc between events. PSCT is fantastic step in the right direction, but it surely not enough. We need those Comp Rules, dedicated rules on the database, and all cards on the database to be updated with PSCT without the need for a reprint. Also the fact that the majority of Judges are not paid and expected to volunteer their time for these 12-16 hour events is pretty ludicrous. Getting product does not count and should not be acceptable as compensation for the amount of time that judges devote to helping host these tournaments and keeping the players happy. Other games that host FREE events pay their judges well over minimum wage, and the fact that one of the "Big 3" won't pay the majority of judges is just crazy to me. I apologize for bringing negativity to your otherwise great video, but more light needs to be shed on how Judging in YGO works and it needs to be changed.

Played since it's inception. It though it was a Windstorm situation and said it would cancel the attack, especially since I thought the "You can attack... If so apply DEF..." text meant you had to declare attack in Defense for that to apply. Boy, was I mistaken...
@@edwiniseman4 Yeah, SHS's say they can "attack" in Defense, but they don't say they can "declare an attack" in Defense, so that means they can declare in Attack and switch to Defense and continue their attack that way. They don't use the stat that they would use based on their battle position during attack declaration, but simply after Damage Calculation. :-)
I would love to try one of these quizzes honestly, I am fairly confident in my rulings for cards and interactions. I technically got 7 out of 8 for this quiz, I was happily surprised. The Rhino one got me, and I got the Phoenix Codetalker one right but for the wrong reason. Love these videos!
I like the last quesion... but I assumed the question was gonna ask him to finish the damage step after Earthquake flipped up. I didn't think for even a second that Earthquake would be allowed to cause all this during the damage step after being flipped up by an attack. This is practically damage calc right now.
17:50 I'm a bit surprised with this ruling since it goes against p.41 of the rulebook on the damage step, and there doesn't seem to be any special "card text vs rules" shenanigans going on. It reads: "You can only activate Counter Trap Cards, or cards with effects that directly change a monster’s ATK or DEF. Also, these cards can only be activated up until the start of damage calculation" Here using the monster's Quick Effect or using Book of Moon in the damage step is not possible, even less so during damage calculation.
Effects that negate other effects can be activated in the damage step, they don’t need to be counter traps. Fiendess negates the effect of Avramax and as part of the negation it also flips the Guru face down. For example if you have a defence position herald of perfection and in the damage step your opponent activated Kalut to attack over it you can discard a fairy to negate the Kalut.

And it's not limited to negates, any monster (Quick effect) with a trigger condition can be activated any time the condition is met, regardless of phase or step. I still don't think his exemple with Book of moon is correct tho.
So, why would I need to ask the head judge on something like the Lyrilusc ruling. There is a clear order of sequencing, why would it get ruled on the opposite of that order?
What about a successfuly flip summoned slate warrior choosing to attack obelisk the tormentor. Opponent, in his confusion, doesnt stop the choice to.attack...can you react to your own shift to battle step to activate metalmorph to defeat the obelisk in the damage calculation? And can your opponent use any trap or instant on the metalmorph to prevent its effect?
Then again, TOMBOX also said UCT cannot attack all monsters your opponent controls, once each. Despite the card actually saying so. So not surprised...
Soo question, Does Decoy ignore summoning conditions? Because if not then wouldn't Q6 actually be, Decoy activates, resolves without effect because of the card it targets being unable to be summoned? Unless we're under the assumption that M-BEWD was properly summoned
Quick question for ruling vid or anyone who may know. With Piercing the Darkness. Hypothetically.. Can I target it to a blue eyes twin burst, and say my opponent has 2 blue eyes on the field. Can I attack the first for 6K, and then use Twins effect to attack another monster and attack it for 9K? Or would it still only attack for 6K? The once per turn has me messed up with twins effect.

With the last question correct me if im wrong but the earthquake giant shouldn't even be able to activate its eff to change the super heavy to defense. There is no legal target on the field to change its battle position due to final attack orders or is there something im missing there?
You can manually change monsters to Attack Position while Level Limit - Area B is on the field. When a card changes position, it doesn't prevent other positions from existing. It just changes it back again.

Fao turns all monsters to attack position and then states specifically that they can't be changed once that happens, level limit area b just continuously keeps all appropriate monsters in def position they can still be changed but they'll just be put right back immediately afterwards so yeah earthquake giant shouldn't have even been able to activate it's effect since there were no legal targets to apply it's effect to
I was using Level Limit Area B as a precedent, but I suppose I should be more specific. OCG Ruling: • The "cannot change their Battle Position" by this card's effect refers to the player manually changing the monster's Battle Position. or more specifically, Previously Official Ruling: • While "Final Attack Orders" is active, effects of "Goblin Attack Force", "Giant Orc", and "Dark Zebra" are resolved, but they are immediately changed back to Attack Position. Source: Rulings page of the Wikia (Oh, and the Tag Force games of course).
Flipping a monster face-down does not reset once per turn effects (example swarm of scarabs). On top of that subterror guru is a hard once per turn, so it only be activated once per turn amongst all copies you control.

For the shuntendoji part since we were in the damage step , the ogre was in attack before so why don't we take his attack for the damage ? I thougt when you are in damage step the atk/def stats are " locked " if there is no effect of modification of stats

Now I wonder, if a monster becomes unable to be destroyed by battle after it has been marked for destruction (see the scenario below), is it destroyed at the end of the damage step? I would guess so. Possible scenario: You control Spell Canceller and Kishido Spirit. Spell Canceller attacks your opponent's random meme monster with 1800 ATK. Is Spell Canceller getting destroyed in this battle?
I think yes, at the end of dmg step, that’s the moment when canceller is getting destroyed, and until that moment, it’s effect still apply, it only stop applying when the monster leave the field so kishido cant protect it at that very moment, when it can, it’d be too late

Hey Coder! Do I, upon declaring the effect of Gravekeeper's Spiritualist, have to pay the cost for fusion immediately afterwards or do I wait for a response prior to paying fusion cost? Spiritualist is worded like this: "During your Main Phase, if "Necrovalley" is on the field: You can Fusion Summon 1 Spellcaster Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using this card you control and other monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Material. You can only use this effect of "Gravekeeper's Spiritualist" once per turn." I know that some ignition effects are worded similar to this but I usually declare the effect then wait for response and if they have none proceed to pay cost fusion. I think there was also a card similar to this one but for pendulums.
As far as I'm aware, just like any Polymerization like card, with ':' before 'using fusion materials,' cost is paid when the effect resolves, after a window to respond. If any of the material is gone after that response, it resolves without effect. I don't know what happens if Necrovalley is no longer on the field when the effect resolves, but was when it was declared.
Oh wait, I was being an idiot. Polymerization sends the material to GY as part of the effect and is not a cost. If it's negated it does not send the materials right? Why did I forget this part I wonder.

I knew Dummy Golem question because of Parasite Paracide. Basically the same effect. Doesn't stay on the field it doesn't go to the deck

I like the last quesion... but I assumed the question was gonna ask him to finish the damage step after Earthquake flipped up.
I didn't think for even a second that Earthquake would be allowed to cause all this during the damage step after being flipped up by an attack. This is practically damage calc right now.

17:50 I'm a bit surprised with this ruling since it goes against p.41 of the rulebook on the damage step, and there doesn't seem to be any special "card text vs rules" shenanigans going on.
It reads:
"You can only activate Counter Trap Cards, or cards with effects that directly change a monster’s ATK or DEF. Also, these cards can only be activated up until the start of damage calculation"
Here using the monster's Quick Effect or using Book of Moon in the damage step is not possible, even less so during damage calculation.
Effects that negate other effects can be activated in the damage step, they don’t need to be counter traps. Fiendess negates the effect of Avramax and as part of the negation it also flips the Guru face down.
For example if you have a defence position herald of perfection and in the damage step your opponent activated Kalut to attack over it you can discard a fairy to negate the Kalut.
@@jk844100 yeah I've since concluded that they didn't update this part of the rulebook. And it's not limited to negates, any monster (Quick effect) with a trigger condition can be activated any time the condition is met, regardless of phase or step.
I still don't think his exemple with Book of moon is correct tho.
I knew the dummy golem question because otherwise it would have been one of the best flip monsters at the time of its release

So, why would I need to ask the head judge on something like the Lyrilusc ruling. There is a clear order of sequencing, why would it get ruled on the opposite of that order?
Some judges don't respect that order of operations, and will rule it as the opposite of what is supposed to happen.

What about a successfuly flip summoned slate warrior choosing to attack obelisk the tormentor. Opponent, in his confusion, doesnt stop the choice to.attack...can you react to your own shift to battle step to activate metalmorph to defeat the obelisk in the damage calculation? And can your opponent use any trap or instant on the metalmorph to prevent its effect?

With Piercing the Darkness. Hypothetically.. Can I target it to a blue eyes twin burst, and say my opponent has 2 blue eyes on the field. Can I attack the first for 6K, and then use Twins effect to attack another monster and attack it for 9K? Or would it still only attack for 6K? The once per turn has me messed up with twins effect.

With the last question correct me if im wrong but the earthquake giant shouldn't even be able to activate its eff to change the super heavy to defense. There is no legal target on the field to change its battle position due to final attack orders or is there something im missing there?
You can manually change monsters to Attack Position while Level Limit - Area B is on the field. When a card changes position, it doesn't prevent other positions from existing. It just changes it back again.
@@yubelious5584 no final attack orders and level limit area b are different in how they enforce their battle position effects. Fao turns all monsters to attack position and then states specifically that they can't be changed once that happens, level limit area b just continuously keeps all appropriate monsters in def position they can still be changed but they'll just be put right back immediately afterwards so yeah earthquake giant shouldn't have even been able to activate it's effect since there were no legal targets to apply it's effect to
I was using Level Limit Area B as a precedent, but I suppose I should be more specific.
OCG Ruling:
• The "cannot change their Battle Position" by this card's effect refers to the player manually changing the monster's Battle Position.
or more specifically,
Previously Official Ruling:
• While "Final Attack Orders" is active, effects of "Goblin Attack Force", "Giant Orc", and "Dark Zebra" are resolved, but they are immediately changed back to Attack Position.

For the Guru question, let's say that his effect is not "Once per turn", can you trigger his effect twice?
Flipping a monster face-down does not reset once per turn effects (example swarm of scarabs). On top of that subterror guru is a hard once per turn, so it only be activated once per turn amongst all copies you control.
idk if that question should be counted as 0.5 because he gave correct result about the stuff happen to the cards on the field. He didn't know about what is in the deck so he can't tell if Ba gonna summon Cir or what.

Also I play War Rocks and got that wrong. Honestly I don't think I can play War Rocks outside of an automatic simulator. Battle Phase interactions are rough with that archetype.

For the shuntendoji part since we were in the damage step , the ogre was in attack before so why don't we take his attack for the damage ? I thougt when you are in damage step the atk/def stats are " locked " if there is no effect of modification of stats

Now I wonder, if a monster becomes unable to be destroyed by battle after it has been marked for destruction (see the scenario below), is it destroyed at the end of the damage step? I would guess so.
Possible scenario: You control Spell Canceller and Kishido Spirit. Spell Canceller attacks your opponent's random meme monster with 1800 ATK. Is Spell Canceller getting destroyed in this battle?
I think yes, at the end of dmg step, that’s the moment when canceller is getting destroyed, and until that moment, it’s effect still apply, it only stop applying when the monster leave the field so kishido cant protect it at that very moment, when it can, it’d be too late
i dont get why judges complain about "fizzle". Resolve with out effect is such a mouthful and most people seem to understand what fizzle means

Hey Coder! Do I, upon declaring the effect of Gravekeeper's Spiritualist, have to pay the cost for fusion immediately afterwards or do I wait for a response prior to paying fusion cost?
Spiritualist is worded like this:
"During your Main Phase, if "Necrovalley" is on the field: You can Fusion Summon 1 Spellcaster Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using this card you control and other monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Material. You can only use this effect of "Gravekeeper's Spiritualist" once per turn."
I know that some ignition effects are worded similar to this but I usually declare the effect then wait for response and if they have none proceed to pay cost fusion. I think there was also a card similar to this one but for pendulums.
As far as I'm aware, just like any Polymerization like card, with ':' before 'using fusion materials,' cost is paid when the effect resolves, after a window to respond. If any of the material is gone after that response, it resolves without effect. I don't know what happens if Necrovalley is no longer on the field when the effect resolves, but was when it was declared.
Oh wait, I was being an idiot. Polymerization sends the material to GY as part of the effect and is not a cost. If it's negated it does not send the materials right? Why did I forget this part I wonder.
