Sometimes coworkers can't be trusted because they share whatever personal information you have to others around work. Be careful what you share with you coworkers.

@@JenniferBrick Do you have a levels of trust video? I personally don’t trust coworkers regarding my personal life and professionally I monitor what I say and opinions. I don’t gossip about other coworker. As a general rule, I don’t say anything that I wouldn’t mind repeated and all emails are written with the fore thought that they might forward it to someone else, so be professional and watch the tone.

Professional people understand that they are in a workplace--you and your co workers are there for a paycheck. Ya need money. Your co workers need money. It's professional behavior to treat your co workers in what I call a "Business-like friendly" manner. Don't talk to them like friends and don't show any traces of hostility towards people you don't generally like. I have been in hostile, toxic workplaces. Tight cliques were formed. There was hostility by these groups towards others. There was gossiping. All of that stuff. Toxic, toxic, TOXIC.

The crazy thing about it is he and I got along great up until now. It's BIZARRE. Thank God the VP seemed to understand that this guy seemed to misunderstand me and that his perception of the situation must have been way off. I appreciate this, and other things you have shared. I liked and subscribed. I am extremely professional, and one of the very few, due to the nature of what I do which I won't go into. I probably alienate people because they don't understand why I don't slack and joke around and goof off. I tend to built relationships by telling management about something someone did good or that had a positive impact. Regarding management, there is absolutely no point in working hard to try to get them to like you. You are, essentially a company tool. What is important is that they see what they need to see, which usually involves confidence and leadership ability.

I always wonder what’s going on in a person’s mind to feel that way.. this is really of low intelligence. I never wanted to feel that way about co-workers .. that is just sad and depressing to think about.

Long story short, for whatever reason, she isn't speaking to me and she unfriended me on social media. We work in the same department and it's incredibly awkward. I don't know how to handle this. I have a co-worker who refuses to reply-all. I see this as a gatekeeping behavior; she's trying to maintain control. For what reason, I am not sure. I've asked her so many times, so many ways, to copy me on emails about projects that I'm responsible for. I still - on a regular basis - find out that she has left me out of the loop. This undermining behavior is so irritating, but she goes about it in a way that if I bring it up, I will appear to be causing drama on the team.

I had a situation where I quit a job without notice. I was being bullied, and the supervisor was part of it. So I knew that attempting to get another job was going to be hard. In my career, almost every employer wants a supervisory reference. And it has to be within a year. I was stuck. So just by luck I applied for a job that was a small business and they rate you by how you perform, not by references. I shadowed another person and then showed them what I know. I worked for this company for 9 months. No references!! No deep dives into "why" I quit or sob stories to tell. It was a great job. I left on great terms and they gave me the fantastic references I needed to go back to the original type of job that I do.

I really do not like any of my co supervisors enough to go out after work and have drinks. The reason is I usually end up having to fix their mistakes or finish their work for them, because they forgot, could not get to it or did not know how to do it. I will help them get through it by explaining how the process works how I do it, but every week it's the same thing. So I feel like I'm wasting my breath and my time trying to help them finish their work and teach them how to do it on their own because the same thing happens week after week. What burns me up is that come annual reviews we all seem to be fully successful even though I'm at the top end of fully successful or exceptional they don't like to give supervisors exceptional because then there's no room to grow that's what I've heard but for the people that aren't quite making it to be in the same category as I am Burns me because they don't finish their work

I’ve worked with some loose screws in my youth one guy you could make a Hollywood film on his compulsive lying others were just back stabbers and would ruin you in a heart beat to jump at any opportunity. Easiest way around it don’t engage because that’s what they want you to do, don’t add them on Facebook or any social media profiles, never engage in personal conversation about finances or relationship troubles etc. Be careful when doing a favor like covering a shift on your day off unless you get it in writing that they are going to cover your day off then walk away, don’t work or accept OT when they don’t pay OT, never start earlier than you need to or stay later than required if it’s out of your control then make sure you get paid for it. Be careful with after work drinks don’t indulge too much into the open bar and start spewing out I hate this guy I hate this boss etc as I can guarantee even though everyone is laughing and agreeing with your statements from the heart in the heat of the moment as someone is highly likely reporting back to management.

I disagree with the working with coworkers you don't like. Not everyone is like you, and not everyone is as mature as you. Coworkers that dislike will treat you as such, an ENEMY! But yes, you can turn an enemy into a friend.
Coworkers is really just like high school. No difference at all. There are cliques, nerds, jocks, cool kids, loners, snitches, gossipers, kiss-asses, etc. I can go on. Same crap, different age.

As a HR Manager in management consulting, for many years, I actually do think you can be friends with people at work. Research also shows it’s important for businesses.
    - That doesn’t mean that if you’re not friends with a coworker that you can’t work with them productively. And many of these tips apply, and are very insightful. I especially agree with the idea that you ensure success of others and that builds personal brand. I’ve always said - if you want to be successful- be generous. This doesn’t mean spend all your time helping others with their jobs - but it does mean taking a few minutes to give people information, introducing them to other company contacts, giving them functional support - and then letting them execute the rest of the way on it. That absolutely builds personal brand - and company collaboration, which is especially important in today’s knowledge based economy, but is true in any industry.
There are different kinds of friends. I think some people are confused what friendships are. They are not always emotionally codependencies. That’s not just a friendship - that’s a codependency. That does indeed not make a good situation to have at work. At the same time, a friend is someone you can ask opinions of and they give you an honest opinion, without you getting offended, because you trust they have the company and your interests at heart. Likewise, a friend is someone you can give honest feedback to, and help them, and who will not be offended. Healthy and constructive debate and analysis is actually healthy for an organization, because few professional initiatives are black and white.
A friend and a good coworker is someone you can disagree with, about topics like approach, without thinking less of the person.
A friend is someone who is happy with your success, and whose success you can be happy about, without jealousy or comparison.
A friend is someone who shares your values of integrity, for example, which hopefully map to the values of the company as well.
A friend will help when they can, and who you help when you can - that’s true for business and for friendships.
I think it’s fair to say that the topics that you talk about with your work friends is not the same as the topics with your non-work friends. For ex, don’t talk about your dating life. Keep away from topics like religious perspectives (unless you both work for a religious organization). Don’t talk about politics (unless you work for a political organization). You don’t need to talk about your medical issues in detail, or at all. If you want to talk about your deep seated emotions about how your family treated you, that’s not necessarily a topic to talk about with work friends (and might recommend getting a therapist). These are topics you might talk about with your non-work friends.
If someone is gossipy, competitive (vs collaborative) with their colleagues, self-absorbed, manipulative, dishonest, disrespectfully disagrees (respectfully disagreeing is healthy), a bully, does not follow through, then I don’t want them as a colleague. That’s toxic. Toxicity is like cancer and if it is not eliminated ASAP, it will grow to the rest of the team, and distract from everyone’s energy from the missions at hand. That person won’t last with me or in my company. Hard stop.
I think friendships are important for businesses, actually. They spawn creativity in problem solving and team performance optimization. After 25 years, I’ve found that creating relationships between people is what makes everyone successful - when in a collaborative company. If someone is not making friends, maybe because they have a different personality style or interests, but has valuable perspectives and are well intended, I’ll happily overlook they don’t have friends, and try to make sure their perspectives are heard and are included. The colleagues who are valuable will see and embrace the ideas of that employee as well. The competitive or political ones may not - and that is indeed on them, and does indeed make them look bad.
I recommend reading some of the research from organizations like Harvard Business Review, or the Center of Creative Leadership, if you’d like to learn more about the power of friendships at work.
