Darrin thanks, that was a very informative video. You answered my questions on what case I should buy for my engine build. Thanks so much. I wish I could down load all your knowledge on VW's.
    Thanks again,

Both my bus engines have good cases. I was fortunate enough to have an AS41 German case. We thought it might be bad but when we torqued it was OK for its first line bore. still not thrust cut. Put a 74 in there and bored it to 90.5 since we are near Brothers machine shop.

Hey Vwdarrin, thanks a lot for this video its really helpful and informative and Id like to say I appreciate you taking the time out to make this video.
How can I get into building motors specifically air-cooled motors. what can I look up on how to learn "upgrading" a motor. I understand the basics/theory/concept of engines and I have technical know how but I just don't know the first thing when you start talking about bigger pistons, cylinders, cranks, camshafts pushrods... I know how everything works I am asking how can learn what works and what to look for when you're building a performance motor.
I have a 1600 duel port that I want to start taking to the next level.
Is there a starters video or a beginners guide, performance engine building for dummies?
I know this video was shot a long time ago, hopefully you get this notification and can help or anyone out there on youtube land can guide me in the right direction I really appreciate you taking the time out. Thanks!

Hi Darrin, I watched you and CT build up that old 40hp motor that doesn't take the case stud orings like mine but it does have the cam bearings. Mine must be older than that one you guys worked on because mine doesn't take cam bearings just the crank journal ones. What year did they start using cam bearings on these. mine was built March of 65.

Thanks for sharing Darrin...... I realize this vid is pushing 7yrs old......Just wondering how well the (CB Performance) Aluminum Cases are holding up - particularly when it comes time to rebuild. Are the AL Cases coming back straight? Rebuildable without warpage? I realize that is kind of open ended because a lot of that would have to do with maintenance and how hard the engine was driven/pushed. Given the engine was not abused and the maintenance kept up - are for the most part they coming back rebuildable to the point they just need to be taken apart, cleaned and they (cases) are good to go? (I realize that other parts would need to be replaced or machined - crank, cam, bearings etc.)Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the overview of cases. Can't wait for the epoxy rundown. I am going to read ahead for the lecture tomorrow. Sometimes the writers on the tech sheets use misleading statements (can be used over bare metal*) when it requires a proper conditioning (i.e. acid etch primer???)

Hello from Colombia, in your experience, an aluminum block or an AS 41 magnesium block is necessary for a stroker engine? Did you ever see that the block bench bearings are oversized in only 800 km of use?

I would aluminum on street performance car all day long. Mag is just not as strong. By the time you pay for the machine work you are at a net loss on using Mag. Old school racers back when aluminum was 995 for scat in the 80s when mag was 75 didnt want to pay for them so they are still in a time warp.

    • @Miggys.Garage

If it isn't to spec wouldn't it become slightly less efficient thus creating less heat, which then would mean less power?

Absolutely great video I couldn't help but notice that you were a little tired. I'm 51 or soon to be in July. I've descoverd that by adding minerals in your life does wonders. Magnesium, zinc, also sodium bicarbonate one teaspoon with a glass of water first thing In the morning. Will amaze you well keep doing what you do be blessed oh yeah not the cheap stuff in the orange box with the hammer. Some brands have silver in them avoid that okay.

    • @hillearybrown7083

+Charles Martin Hey Charles I am 60 and figure I will give your mineral idea a try. On the Bicarb what brand do you use?
      Thanks for the idea

    • @charlesmartin3265
      @charlesmartin3265 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Hilleary Brown Well hello Hilleary go to Amazon.com and get these products. sodium bicarbonate, food grade and at Amazon.com go to bulk supplements and get magnesium glycinate also if you unsure about the magnesium try Calm from the same amazon. com it's pricey but very effective I will go as far too say a sure thing. As for as colds and the flu I take J Crow's iodine solution also at Amazon.com get the 2 bottles for 20.00 bucks. You will never get sick again everyone on my job gets those flu shots and I flat out refused to take those and explained why I never got sick. They did and took off work. And they came back still sick and I felt a little I'll but took a half of the baby drop full. killed it. J Crow's iodine solution attacks any mucus in your body super fast. Also I had a friend whom also drove tractor trailer and he suffered from the crippling forum of arthritis were his hands made a claw. Not anymore after taking the iodine and a mineral called Boran. Well be blessed anyway I can help you I will be glad.

God I hate to hear cases scraping on a concrete floor. Is such a careless way to handle something of value. Have you ever tried to put tin on a case on the bottom under the pushrods tubes when the screw bosses were smashed or ground off or the holes were half ground away. Just saying.
