Now that he's at full power Thanos JUST manages to overpower him. If only Thor showed up 3 seconds earlier." It would feel contrived. But instead Stormbreaker smashes through and lands the hit and you're like "wait what?" For the last moments before Thanos' victory you realise Thor can actually win this, which makes it all the more tragic. Thor didn't lose because he wasn't strong enough. He lost because of a decision he made. A decision to prolong Thanos' suffering just a few seconds longer to make himself feel better. And everyone paid the price. Makes sense to go for the chest as the biggest target. But the second he landed, he should have ripped that axe out and decapitated Thanos.
