This was in the days before answering machines, and definitely before voice-mail. You could let the phone ring forever. It's a haunting song. My personal ELO favorite. I always loved the sound effects. Jeff Lynne is a Beatles disciple. It's just one fine example of the ripples finding a new and extraordinary voice.

so many people find beatles all over elo but they were their own sound. Just cause there's strings, harmonies with British voices and great production doesn't mean that Jeff lynne had the Beatles on his mind when he wrote or arranged this song. I'm sure he was a big beatles fan and shaped the elo sound with some Beatles songs in mind. But he had his own sound cause if you heard a section of an elo song you never heard before, you could deduce quickly it was an elo, not Beatles, song.

Poor Brad. It's just in recent decades that people felt the need to put everything into a genre and check some kind of box. I don't know 'bout all that. Rock has had some amazing vocalists, and, while good, his voice is easily the weakest of his many talents, far behind his songwriting, producing, arrangements and imaginative creativity. If it wasn't for those other factors, I don't think he'd have been successful on his voice alone.
Jeez, I've been singing Lynne's praises in comments for so long, it feels weird to be the one sounding a sour note here. But gotta be honest - not to be would diminish everything I've said about his brilliance in all those other areas.

I know what it is you're trying to say. The violins in that music just soars and come in subtly and then all of a suddenly you have all of this orchestrated music blending in together with the harmonies and the violins's soaring music comes in soaring like birds the way it starts out. The lead singer, Jeff Lynne is talk singing the beginning his feelings about about trying to reach this person by telephone and he gets more in-depth describing his feelings. The music starts growing, the instruments starts coming in the orchestra starts coming in with the desperation of anticipating this person to respond to his phone calls and the feeling that he sings about of the sadness that they haven't picked up the telephone. And then maybe the hope that they will consider picking up that telephone. Jeff Lynne is a great storyteller with his lyrics and great lead singer he orchestrated everything he writes. The man is a musical genius. Please tell me if this is what you were talking about and trying to describe your feeling of this music 🎻🎶🎶

Yes, such a creative genius... don't cha love how in the intro, the vocals sound as if you're hearing someone at the other end of an old school land line. That slight echoe-y, tinny distance. So clever! ...and then the sound morphs into a normal face-to-face sound. Again, thanks....haven't listened to this song in ages!

Back in the days of red phone boxes over here in England. This song takes me hurtling back, a sad song but too flipping good to not still enjoy it and appreciate the feeling! I recall hearing this playing out on a radio as I was walking past such a phone box in Weymouth on the south coast of England, I was 12 years old in '77, the year Elvis passed on!

Speaking of the lyric "twilight", I highly recommend "Prologue/Twilight" from their Time album. It's when they first started embracing synths after being mostly analog. It's a real shift in their sound, but a wonderful opener.

There was a whole genre of early rock (20+ years before ELO) that was called "doo-wop" and I think this song evoked that same kind of "sing-along" vibe that was often a part of doo-wop music. Great band, cool song, and wonderful reaction, as usual.

The person is looking for yesterday.......but its not there anymore. He has a need to connect with his memories.
The song is melodic and personal. Jeff's vocals magnatize you into the song. One can feel this man's loneliness and desire to connect from the first four words...."Hello, how are you?" The emotion starts right there, and it's painful yet beautiful.
    Great reaction!
