  • A bit of a mix this week - a little reno, a little brocanting.... and a bit of gin!

Manor & Maker theme music by Jamie Christopherson and Jeff MacDonald for Louder Productions.

Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

Love how Sara had the fabric draped over her on the couch... would make a cool looking costume! So many cool things at the brocante! Good luck with the sloe gin! I would forget about it and have a mess when I found it!

Sloes need to have the first frost to develp some fruit sugar. You harvest them late autumn.

great idea making sloe-gin. I've learned the berries are best after the first frost thus we wait till then to collect them (usually in november), then soak them in good gin - local brand from the Black Forest - till x-mas, add a bit of honey and fill the tasty sloe-gin in nice bottles as x-mas presents.
we once tried the freezer but that didn't work...

The sloe gin seems easy enough. We don't drink anymore, but that sounds like a nice liquor.
My eyes are always bigger than my budget when shopping as well.
I am glad you're getting rid of the purple. I like it better outside, more like on a door or shutters. Too much of it is overwhelming. ❤

Steve, my Canadian mother taught me to use a pail with a handle and belt to harvest berries. You tie the pail handle onto your middle at the front with the belt. That way you have two hand to pick berries. Works like a charm and is much faster.

Just picked the first blackberries from our canal side. Made the pie, poured the cream over it while still warm and took that first bite. Yum. Look forward to that every year. My dad took us when we were kids, and to me it is always special because they are wild and free. The gin sounds interesting as well. I made Rose Geranium Raspberry Liqueur also very good.

Steve, next time you make sloe gin, use a cheap gin. By the time the sloes have worked their magic, the gin flavour won’t be detectable. Saves money and no one is any wiser. Blackberry brandy made to the same quantities is amazing. Use a cheap brandy too. If your able to hold onto a bottle of blackberry brandy for a few years, it tastes amazing used in a trifle.

In my youth I had a friend who would make a "Slow Gin Fizz" cocktail which was very good. Now I see that I was clearly hearing that incorrectly, in fact it was a sloe gin fizz. There are many recipe variations online. However did we live without the internet? Thanks for the paint color tease of the butler's pantry evolution! Now I'm really curious. Enjoy all the coming fruit harvest! Its a great time of year. 😊 Cheers!
