- After a quick flashback to the Lalande Patron days, we welcome two visitors. Sara’s mom Dee, and our friend Andie, arrive in time to celebrate the Journees du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) at the Chateaux de Pompadour and Hautefort (in costume no less)!

Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.
Sarah you should totally do a sewing retreat making costumes and at the end throw a ball. . You could renovate two rooms for antique working sewing sewing machine sergers and fabric buttons mannequins sitting fitting tea /coffee room and quilt displays . Shopping for fabrics as a group ect.

Dear Sarah, costume tutorial, absolutely. I agree with one comment and a ball at completion. I have a suggestion, if I may. Check into time period eye wear, it would compliment your persona. All the little details add so much to the final look. All the variety in this vlog was so interesting. Hugs💞

I was in primary school when my grandaunt let me play with her Singer portable sewing machine & I loved to help her spin the wheel while she sewed. She taught me to clean & oil the parts.
When I was in secondary school , I started sewing simple things for my mother on her Singer table sewing machine , like cushion covers.
When it broke down beyond repair over the decades , my mother sold the machine to a rag & bone man & my husband turned the table into a coffee table in our living room. 🧵🪡
Everything was so fun. Castles, birthday gift shopping, crafts, Andi in a different castle still doing beautiful art. Sara you did such a wonderful job on those costumes and it is nice that you had the chance to wear them again. You and Steve look terrific in them. Last but certainly not least…..a huge hello to Dee! That looks like one I have, at least I hope I still have it, hope I did give it away. Where did they find it, I live in the Kawartha Lakes in Pontypool. My mother gave it to me, it was a wedding gift of hers from her sisters mother in law.
For the urns at the front of the chateau. A reminder If you use them for plants, make sure there are aeration holes at the bottom. Use a drill but go easy and don't force the bit through - otherwise you'll crack it.
Suggestions: 2 next to the door - topiary - either yew (called 'ifs' in French) or cedar - in corkscrew or ball type. Don't do pyramidal as this will make the pot look bigger and drag the eye to the bottom of the tree's base. Once the trees are in, under plant with either ivy or other trailing perennial (creeping Jenny, Creeping Purple Charlie, creeping phlox or thyme. In summer add Bacopa or cascading Lobelia, such as 'Regatta Blue' or other color (not white). Trailing flowers like supertunias, calibracoa (million bells), etc. For the front urns, add some "Canada" and plant a spike in the center (draceana), surround with 3 large bright red geraniums and white allyssum or white Regatta lobelia.

So nice to see your mom visiting! Depending on how cold it gets in your area, you might plant decorative cabbages and pansies. In the US mid-Atlantic states these are often planted over the winter months. The cabbages add great texture and color (green/purple). The pansies will bloom unless the weather becomes too severe. Love the urns!
I'm not sure what would live through the winter in planters in your area but I would suggest evergreens on top and large pumpkins with some hanging greenery around them in the bottom planters. Also you two looked spectacular in your costumes.

I love your life, you're living it so wonderfully! The table coverings really made the place special. It was good to see such lovely fabric put to such good use. It's great to see your mama again, as well as the gifts she brought. The painting is beautiful, and the coverlet is magnificent! I can't imagine how long it took to crochet, it's a piece of art. The urns look like they've always been there, so perfectly placed. You have such a generous family to gift them to you. Happy birthday! It's always great to see Andie, I admire her art so much.

My gosh you two are fabulous when you wear your costumes. Bowing to the young girl was perfect. Mom was certainly very, very generous with her gifts. I hope she has a lovely time in France in the Fall. The urns are a fabulous gift as well...your family certainly loves you. I guess you could put mums in the urns but they are not the prettiest flowers in the garden and very abundant in the Fall.

If you mean chrysanthemums, in France these are so closely associated with cemeteries that they are never given as bouquets, or used in the house. So they wouldn't be very welcoming at the door!

Sara, figuring out the sewing machine made me laugh! I only get my 1970's model out on extremely rare occasions and have to re-learn every time.

Sarah and Steve, how wonderful to make chateau visits in full costume. A treat for you, your subscribers and visitors. I can’t imagine how delightful it must have been to see you walking into the courtyard in full attire! You must add a parasol! The most inexpensive thing to put in your planters for winter is evergreen cuttings. Fill the planters with a good amount of potting soil and make sure to keep it damp. So go out and prune away. Find drapey greens like trailing cypress to spill over the edges, stiff firs for vertical interest, cedar, pine, privet (the kind with hard blue berries) and I’m sure in the neighbor hood you will find some hedges loaded with hard red berries growing in abundance and don’t forget pine cones. To start in fall, find the drapey greens and then a huge potiron on each pot. Then when it gets colder, you can eat the pumpkin in endless potages. Fill the pots with all the evergreens you can scavenge on long walks.
As to the pumpkin/potiron, I was thinking not of the American type, rather the squat red/orange type they have at the open air market that are so big the seller cuts off portions to sell. Pick ones with thick vines attached.
Some beautiful fall mum's - all the same colour would look good in the new urns. Keep them watered! Some pumpkins around them on the steps, some dried hydrangea etc would make a lovely display.
Excellent choice on the birthday urns... beautiful, classic and timeless! My first thought was to plant arborvitae... they will add wonderful height and are evergreen, so they will be beautiful year round and very low maintenance. Also they are very conducive to adding embellishments for seasonal touches. Bonus... they have no thorns or pokey bits that can hurt you or snag clothing, which is always something I like to consider for plants around an entranceway. If you want to mix it up a bit, perhaps arborvitae in the large urns and rosemary topiaries for the smaller urns. The rosemary repels mosquitoes as well as some other insects and is a great flavor enhancer to your kitchen creations, whenever a trim is necessary.

You two look so gorgeous; the antique look suits you! It's nice to see Sara's mom back for a visit. And I love it when there's a chateau "overlap" -- Andy's a surprise from LaLande -- I wonder if she ever foresaw where a visit to LaLande would lead. I'll bet you artists -- all four of you -- spent some wonderful evenings dining and chatting, away from the vlog camera!
As usual, so many wonderful vignettes. So happy we get more of Dee, and a treat to see Andi. Love that you had an opportunity to take the costumes for an outing. They are gorgeous and suit you both. (Nice addition with the shades...M Antoinette would be jealous.) The urns are perfect and make the entrance suddenly grand.
For the summer, put three layers. The outside should have hanging vines, then some begonias, then a medium height fern style plant in the middle. For winter you could put some mums in there, then switch out for a xmas decor of pine stems with some type of red berries mixed with some pine cones painted in sparkle paints with some ribbons, red bows etc..
Here in Nova Scotia Canada, the potted mums are coming out in autumnal colours combined with various types of pumpkins, squashes and gourds… So lovely to see your mom again and what a beautiful painting and crocheted tablecloth/bed covering… And always, lovely to see Andie! Love seeing you dressed in your costumes again!
Love the costumes. I've been sewing for 62 years and still love it. If I was able we could get all the curtains and beautiful things made. Best wishes to the two of you on your adventure.
Hardy cyclamen might be nice in the planters. What a lovely gift and perfect location for them! Must be so fun wearing the costumes! Sara's mom is absolutely charming.
Yes I was going to suggest Cyclamens. Perfect for a constant display over the fall and winter.
If you want to 'age' your urns ( each person is different on this) then you can put some moss in a blender with some UN pasturised milk and paint the urns with the mixture and moss will naturally grow on them ! xoxoxoxo

The urns absolutely make your entrance, I would plant layers of spring bulbs and then some heather, grasses and a few evergreen flowering plants for Autumn and Winter interest, thereby covering three seasons! You could then leave the Spring bulbs in after they finish remove and replace a little soil and replant with a layer of Summer bulbs and fresh bedding plants.

Good morning Steve & Sara, what a delightful video. It was great to see Dee arriving as well as having Andi, you could not have asked for more. The gifts were amazing. The painting was really exquisite and also the table crochet work. Much time has been devoted to that piece of handwork. It will last forever and I know Sara will take good care of it. The visit to the chateaux was lovely. Those dresses, especially the pink one was just gorgeous. Imagine being dressed up in that, my goodness, you will really feel like a Madame! The urns are so smart, miniature conifers, miniature roses as well as herbal plants like a rosemary will work great. Remember they must be able to last through the snowy winter, but they can be covered for a couple of weeks only to be enjoyed again during the summer months. Best thing to put in your pots would be tall ornamental grass and pansies, ornamental cabbage is good to they will last into the colder times so you would be able to keep it for quite a while. I would do a taller grass in the ones beside the door and a shorter medium size one in the bottom ones and then put pansies all the way up and around.
Watching the two of you walking in the hall in costume as Lord and Lady was awesome! Touring the grounds and smelling the flowers like you haven't a care in the world was simply delicious! And the urns, I'm in heaven! I'm inspired to makeover my urns for fall. And to top it all off, seeing your woods in the background, as you visit the artists in the garden. Every time I see you guys I think I'd love to drink a bottle of wine with you!

I would put small spruce in now ,you could decorate them at Christmas and then add trailing geraniums in the spring to give colour right through the summer

Great vlog, lovely to see Andi and Dee again. Are the urns terracotta? If so I would suggest to line them with plastic or waterproof paint to seal them. Terracotta is very porous and you will spend the entire summer next year watering whatever you plant in them. Also make sure that there are drainage holes. As a foundation planting in the top two I would plant a pair of topiaries box trees or maybe two bay trees. Providing the trees weren’t too large you could under plant then next spring with trailing annuals. In the bottom two urns two box topiary balls were be so very appropriate. The only thing would have to do over winter is to cover the box on nights that we’re expecting frosts with hessian or burlap to stop the leaves from being burnt. That little bit of formality at the door would be gorgeous.
PS the lanterns at the front door are lovely but the glass either is filthy dirty or needs to be replaced. You can now get LED lights that look like flickering candles. While they don’t provide a lot of light they add lots of atmosphere particularly as you are coming towards Halloween! Just a thought!

For the urns, coleus! Super easy care instructions, long lasting and comes in a wide variety of colors.
For your urns, find some pumpkins that are big enough to sit on the rims. Maybe even find some that are stackable in different colors. Or, do y’all get mums and pansies? Those would be pretty for this time of year! ❤️😊

I think perhaps for fall and winter, some type of cypress in the top urns (or some other tall plant to frame the door) and a more low-growing composition to overflow outwards from the bottom urns, to open up the space, would look lovely and inviting, I think! Heather and ivy perhaps for autumn? The urns fit so well there too! 😍👌

So nice to see Dee and Andie! Sarah, I just bought a pattern to make a costume similar to yours. I have no events or occasions coming up, I just want to make one. You never know when you might need one!!
Great to see you in your costumes, especially in the gardens! Evergreens like boxwood would look lovely in the urns, or for seasonal displays, grasses, branches, and berries now, and evergreen branches, with bare branches and berries in winter. Where I live we can cut evergreen and push into the potting soil and the display lasts all winter.
I like the idea of aging the pots.

The painting was lovely, ant urns look so nice. I would put evergreen shrub in tall ones than plant them in garden in spring, the smaller ones some mums for fall which you can later plant also in garden

The wooden game at 14:35, I learned how to play in the Philippines, where it is called Sungka; I remember that on the way back to Hawaii, we flew over a storm and lost quite a few of the shell pieces between the seats with the roller coaster!! I replaced them when I got to the Islands. ;-)

The urns are fabulous! Using the rule for plants, "thrill, spill and fill" just find some annuals for now. Go with seasonal. Also, it would look beautiful to put small arbervidaes in the planters. If they get too big for the pots, plant them somewhere on the chateau grounds. Decorate the shrubs for holidays. Good luck!

I don’t know how I missed that this was your mother 🫣it makes so much sense. You both sound alike. Even your cadence of speaking is spot on. I know I’m crazy but I can remember people by their voice. I can be in the kitchen and someone will come on the tv and I know instantly. With a plus there must be a minus which is I can see people within their voice but I cannot remember words for music. I know the words but as soon as the music starts nothing comes out. 😜

For your new flower urns, I suggest sunburst mums, sunflowers, red berries and orange/gold Autumn leaves.
You need wire spectacles to wear with the costumes, rather than eyeglasses. That way you can really make a spectacle of yourselves, nyuk nyuk.
If you decide to do this and you can see if Zenni, a prescription eye glass company sells glasses frames for $6.00 to higher but affordable. I have gotten glasses for twelve dollars when I went to a name brand place in USA used to charge 700.00 dollars. All you need is a prescription and a measurement between the pupils of your eyes. They are ordered on line and mailed.
