"CHASING BRANNAS" | DEON FOURIE & JOHN DOBSON INTERVIEW

  • They say 'never meet your heroes'...rubbish! Ever since I took the channel to France for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, I've spoken about the incredible story of Deon Fourie. When I said I was going to South Africa I made it a mission to meet the man and the myth. As you'll see, "Brannas" is a great guy. The absolute bonus is that I also got to spend time with the amazing rugby IQ, and all round good guy, that is John Dobson, Head Coach of the Stormers.
Rugby World Cup memories, Rassie Erasmus, a new URC story and the future of rugby are all discussed. Enjoy.

To the point of the rugby crowds being more inclusive early in the video...I read Rassie's book, lent to me by (and the classification is necessary here) a 26yr old black lady at my work. That would NEVER have happened even 10-15yrs ago...much less pre- 1995. Rugby and Rassie has done wonders for our society. When the government learns Rassie's trick, SA will be unstoppable!

You know Timmy, just thinking here...alot of us Saffas have been vocal and thanking you for your efforts here in SA, reflecting on our country and the rugby which is at great heights now...and the splendid job you do presenting SA to the rugby world.. But, it needs to be said : you're a credit to the English people: your honesty, your humble eloquence, your unbridled passion, your ability to embrace all we throw at you and simply your shared love of the game. Don't think you've been given sufficient credit for this. Please come back - we do mean it when we say you're an adoptive ambassador!

For some of your viewers who maybe did not understand what Dobbers meant calling himself a "Soutie".
It is Afrikaans slang refering to some English speaking South Africans.
The best translation I can come up with would be Salty.
That describes a guy With his one foot in S A and the other in England and refers to the part dangling in the ocean!

Rassie won't be around forever, and I think his biggest challenge is to plan for his successor. That would ensure that what he and his team of coaches, aministrators and players built up the past decade won't be lost overnight. The Doctor is wise enough to realise that, I'm sure.

What. A. Get! Great job on getting this interview, Tim! A few thoughts, if I may:
    - Dobbo is 100% about transformation. Yes, the quota system was a pain but not only do we not have to count anymore, our player pool has increased by millions.
    - Consider the fact that up until 1995 we were the most successful rugby side by sheer winning percentage. Obviously this was during the dark days of the past BUT we have that same DNA except now our player base is absolutely huge.
    - Also consider the fact that the URC is not a domestic league for us, plus most of our Springboks don't play for SA teams. This is evidence of that enormous player base we've been building.
Methinks the future of Rugby in South Africa is burning bright.

I’m so glad that Dobbo touched on the point about how many kids in schools that aren’t model C or above aren’t getting a look in. When I read comments from other countries about how SA has 65 million people I always want to scream how so many of that number still don’t have access or choice to access rugby or facilities and coaching that will help them get to professional level. Imagine the talent we’re missing out on. This is not a criticism as I realise there is no easy solution but I hope it is something they are working on.
Great conversation between 3 absolute gents. Although I’m a Sharks fan I really enjoy listening to Dobbo and enjoy watching the Stormers play. This was a great watch!
