I think age is not a barrier. I am 35 and I am about to start my PhD in US. Indeed, I think that before doing a Phd, students should be exposed to working experience in order to better understand the "real situation". Research ideas come from experience... otherwise may be a disconnection between academia and society.

It could be difficult in a native speaking country but you can try. We'd suggest doing a postdoc in USA first and then look for job opportunities. All the best!!

The UK does not have a comprehensive exam, but you should be successful, and your academic supervisors think you can proceed to PhD; otherwise, you might exit MPhil. That is why some programmes accepted they accepted you for MPhil/PhD

In some countries age is a barrier but I. The USA no discrimination
US never discriminate based on age. I had people in my class who were 54 and 55 who are now doing PhD.

Any experience will help. Breaks won't harm the chances unless they are long enough to affect your journey.
