      I am 65 and have lived in canada for the last 43 years continuously. I am at a stage now regretting my decision. I am neither a fit in the west and am worried will not be fir in India. My children ( 30 and 34) are also struggling emotionally. we are all well settled financially but life has no meaning.

      Its very difficult to sustain there .. forget tenure track positn .. A phd (& w post doc/s ofc) w/o publications doesnt really stand a chance in the cut throat academia ..
      But 1 can choose the industry , if thats satisfactory

    I had similar path 20yrs back. Very happy to stay back in US in my prime . I have worked both in India and US. I hate the toxic culture in India .I came from
    Lower middle class , having a complete meal was luxury for me and my family back then . Got into top most engg college in India in merit . Money was my priority back then. Took care of my parents and my family and enough to retire by 50 . I miss my friends and family in India . I will be retiring in 5 yrs and I plan to settle in India and visit US as I have friends and family here too. It’s individual preference and your decision is based on your priority in life . There is not a right or wrong decision I believe . Do I regret staying back in US - Not at all . I am sure you made the right decision for your situation .Good luck

      It's important to always have a backup plan, and that plan should be centered around India. In America, you are an individual, but in India, you have the potential to build something much larger. This needs to be planned well in advance if you intend to return to India. Otherwise, you might end up retiring at 55, with all your valuable experiences going to waste. Plan wisely, and you will likely find greater success in India than in America.

Further, want to compliment you on being more than your just a job,in the same manner I modestly tried , when returning back from Boston for almost continuous 25years service stint at both government & private medical institutions within India , starting in 1969 till retirement .     Came across this video at the right time, as my husband and I have just made the decision to come back to India after 10 years and 12 years respectively in various countries (USA, Netherlands, NZ and France). We couldn't be more excited knowing we are coming back for the same reasons you mentioned of wanting to build something and have a more wholesome life rather than running after silly visas and what not and still feeling like any of these places would never be home. Knowing such smart minds as yourselves have made this decision makes us super confident in our own decision, so thank you for sharing :)

    You are a great person, visionary, optimistic, nationalistic and family oriented. Wish you all the best. Some of the things that will bother you though are pollution level in India, overcrowding , children’s educational difficulties due to excessive competition, poor health facilities and corruption .

      Exactly. Post 2009-10 the US immigration process doesn’t favour staying in the US. Being always stressed about your visa status is not worth the benefits. Why would a PhD from MIT subject himself to the Visa lottery.

    Congatulations for choosing India as your place to settledown and work, perhaps start a business of your own. I know many Indians who have gone to the USA for higher studies who, after finishing the studies and getting a job always dream about returning to India some day, perhaps in a few years, to settle down, but never take any action to realize their dream. (And talk about it endlessly, too.)You have taken the bold step. I had that dream too, but I am still here, in the USA. I am now nearly 81 years old, and finally have stopped dreaming about returning to India. Wishing you the best, and success in your endeavers.

    You're courageous and good wishes to you. I am living in US during the past 4 years... There are serious issues living in USA. This is applicable for those who moved here during the past 5-6 years. VISA issues, Healthcare costs, High inflation during the past 3 years, High cost of college education, Lack of jobs in IT for those from tier-2 universities in US specially Indian kids (Ivy league and another 10 universities are the first tier), Lack of good family holiday attractions (in total there are just 5-6 like Grand canyon and Niagara falls), High costs of house maintenance (constant repairs), Many practical problems that you will come to know only after you move here.
    In India one can tour to old attractions like Hampi, Ellora, and another 100 such places or the new attractions like Ayodhya, Kevadia, etc.

      The historic monuments in the USA are from late 1800s. Where as India touts 4-5000 years of evident history. What must change is caste, color , religion-based bias, which the root of rampant corruption in India. We can’t give up. Entrepreneurs like him will be the single bricks of change.

    In many cases PhD’s can find good opportunities in India in universities or start their companies. But problems of pollution, traffic, and education of children later in life will come to you.

    Strange, if an apartment rent was $3500 in USA, typically 2 to 3 students share a 3 BHK, wonder you had to live alone. However, it's your decision. Opportunities are better in USA definitely, and work culture is a lot better!! I am here in USA for past 23 years and I can vouch for that!!

    Forget about the MIT, IIT, PhD identities, the point is even from a mediocre technical college, you can still become successful. You need to be a motivator, an achiever with an innovating mind. If living in USA is a misery, you did a good thing by returning home. Would be good to hear an update video from you in 5 years time.

    My children also returned their Green card after 6 years in the US.They are happy here same company Google.
    India is more technologically better than anywhere in the World.

    Main Issues in india are: pollution, traffic, poor infrastructure, corruption and congestion making it difficult for people to return. Do not underestimate how important clean water, air and beautiful landscapes are to people.

    Times have changed. There are tremendous growth opportunities now in India and because of market scalability and appetite on par with US consumer market, this is probably the way to go.

    Welcome home!!! Our infrastructure certainly needs honing and toning, but that can happen when you people collaborate with those here and create a whole new scenario. Your decision worth the price you have paid. 13:17 13:20 You have said it. That's the spirit. This is from somebody who also returned, suffered the decline , etc.etc., but eventually found our space.

    Please don't be hesitant to say that you did the right thing! Ofcourse you will be a second class citizen there even after a few generations. Sitting on huge stacks of money cannot be the goal of life anyway. Hope your video brings more people back not necessarily for a start up but just to be with your own people.

    Excellent! Congrats on your decision and for the share. I had a 20 year dream to work in the USA from my childhood days. I left India to work and from that country I finally got an opportunity to the best job I could hope for in my expertise. When I went there to work with an H1 visa where I previously have been travelling enjoying the experience. It didn't take me 2 years to realise USA was not the place so before my company could further compel me to get the green card I rushed back. Exactly! I am with the ladies who find it difficult to return to India because of the patriarchy that is still rooted in the culture and safety issues so as for me I was happy to return to the closest place to India where I worked before going to the USA Dubai as it is safe and one can to be in touch with all of India s development and still get to be the same person as we would like to be.

    The US has tremendous contempt for expertise and always has. Most talented Americans don't go into technical fields, but are more likely to go into banking. I run a tech startup, and most of our employees are Asian because there are no Americans in the job pool. We are very happy to have our employees, but it underscores the contempt Americans have for science and tech.

    India scores above US on
    1) Cost of living
    2) Healthcare availability
    3) Services and Support systems - house helps
    4) Life after 50 is definitely better in India from Cost and Family point of view.
    5) Availability of qualified manpower for business
    You can get more creature comforts in India for much less. For that one has to live a bit away from the crowded city centres and closer to your work locations ( which these days are located away from city centres) . Child education is much more affordable. Healthcare is easily available at much more affordable cost.
    The only attraction is US companies if you are into a job. If you want to do business it is better to be based in India

    Couple of things - I am working in Northamerica for 35 years I agree with most of items execept forllowing
    1. To Startup in US is much more difficult in US and especially for Indians - with our brown skins - we are not successful in selling which is needed for startup Therefore most of startups Indians pair with americans. You might end up giving up huge part to your american partners.
    2. For Indian Females - I think it is better to be in India as there are servants in India compared to house work. My wife always complains about it.
    3. Working in India versus US - There are better job growth opportunities in India than US market as US market is mature. Also don't minimize the stress of getting Green Card and losing of job - job security in US.

    USA the place it used to be is not the same now.
    The political land scape is a big question mark not that India is better. Certainly India can offer a better opportunity.
    India needs to pull up its infrastructure and political behaviour.
    Home is always sweet and warm no doubt.

I see that your current product is in the education sector which seems to be very good, but I feel that you should also leverage on your expertise in your research topic i.e. solar cells and also the network you have created during your PhD. I think your journey and expertise acquired are elsewhere and hope you can bring that to India. All the very best to you.

    Well done! You also have far less chance of being shot dead in the US. Make the best use of your talent in India and benefit your own people. I have a good friend from Kerala who graduated from Stanford who went back and founded a company in India. Meanwhile, Chinese scientists are increasingly going home. Take your skills and grow the motherland.

    You said it. In India sigle unmarried is a nightmare I moved to the US in my end of my teenage. It was hell in India those days.In the US is like heaven so much peace, freedom and respect. I' m living in the US more then India. One thing Indians should change they attitude...Now a days Indians coming to the US different greed. That is for sure the US is not same like 20 year back.     As per some highly respected social thinkers, by 2040, the best of the brains in the world will be working in India to service India and the world to shape life for humanity into modern times!!!

    You made the right decision. First the education in USA, UK, Canada, Germany etc is overated. They do not value Indian students and they will give you a hard time, least desirable projects, almost useless supervisors not keen to show you any thing valuable. Most Indians are misled into believing the education abroad is better. It is actually backwards. Then there is lot of racism and politics in universities and at work if you can find a decent job which is unlikely for 10 years. So most Indians end up as cheap labour for MacDonalds flipping hamburgers, 7 eleven stores sales clerk. India sends 59 billion dollars per year to US as tuition fees and similarly to other western countries for useless education. Better to build good campuses in India for 59 billion dollars and hire experienced professionals from abroad to come and teach in India. There will be lot of savings for India and better development of country. Modi needs to do this. Parents take note and do not lose your money and children to US education hyped craze.
