No reviewer ever seems to understand that the reason Maximus’s family was killed is that is what was always done when a King or Emperor was deposed or assassinated. Kill the family and you don’t have to worry about any of them trying to reclaim the throne or trying to take revenge. That little boy would grow up at some point and be a threat so nip that little problem in the bud. Also, if you knew that if you were to get crossways with the ruler your family would be killed you would think twice about stepping out of line.

Every time I watch this movie I cry. It brings up very strong emotions, Maximus faces death not as a coward but as a hero; knowing he will perish if he wins or loses. And what is most sad is he has nothing left to lose, so when he faces his death he is at peace. He longs for deaths sweet release, so he will be reunited with his wife and son. In the end he dies a citizen of the republic, an avenging father and husband and a savior of his fellow gladiators. A man who has nothing gives everything.
interesting fact: at this time in history Rome was ruled by Two Emperors, Marcus Aurelius was Commodus and Lucilla's father, but Lucilla's husband Lucius Verus was Marcus Co Emperor. making Lucilla an Empress until Lucius Verus's death in 169. when Commodus became the new emperor this change meant that Lucilla had no hope of becoming Empress again, after going back to Rome she hated living a quite life. Over time, Lucilla became very concerned with her brother Commodus' erratic behaviour and its resulting effect on the stability of the empire. In light of her brother's unstable rule, in 182 Lucilla became involved in a plot to assassinate Commodus and replace him with her second husband Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus and herself as the new rulers of Rome. Commodus ordered the deaths of several of the co-conspirators and then banished Lucilla and her daughter Plautia(one of the co conspirators) to the island of Capri, he then sent a centurion there to execute them later that year
The scene when they kill his son always reminds me of the Indian village massacre from Soldier Blue when two children holding hands running away get taken out in the same way.

At the cinema I can totally understand that! Especially when it's a good movie, I would've done the same. It was aired on TV when I was a kid and it blew my fricking brain.
To be fair, in betraying Maximus's plan, Lucillus did what most mothers would have done. She was protecting her child and the threat was immediate. Maximus had a plan to be set free and would eventually have met up with his army in Germania and marched on Rome to free her from Commodus's rule, but that would have taken months and by then, Lucilla and her son would have been dead if she had refused to tell her brother the truth.
You are very inattentive ... At the time of the plan, the army was in Ostia, at that time it was no more than 2 days there and back .. A maximum of three ... She endured more and three days do not play a role ..
Overall a good (and emotional) reaction to one of the greatest films ever made but the anger towards Lucilla was completely unwarranted and ridiculous and showed a total lack of understanding of the situation. Oh yeah - almost anything from Enya is wonderful! I play it regularly; only problem is that, in my head, this amazingly beautiful piece of music is permanently welded to this *so* bittersweet ending ... talk about being emotionally conflicted!
@@ephennell4ever wait, Enya didn't sing the ending song for this movie haha. Lisa Gerrard did. But I do agree with you though. I love Enya's song's a lot too. "May it Be" from Lotr is a very close 2nd to this in my list.
Highly recommend another pair of movies directed by Ridley Scott: Black Hawk Down (2001) and then Kingdom of Heaven (2005). The first about modern warfare and the second about the Crusades
the hate towards lucilla is crazy! the whole movie commodus is established to be utterly insane and ultra cruel when necessary. so if that man, threaten your child, you not going to push your luck or chances.any sane parent would give up the plan in favor for their kid if a madman( with ultimate power) threatens it
I think Maximus wanted death, so that he could be with his wife and son. But he also wanted the death of Commodus before he died. And I think that Lucillus loved him but that she also loved her son, and she had to choose between her son's safety and Maximus's.
I would love to see your reaction to the movie Warrior with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte - most of the men I know rank it right up there with Gladiator. It's about two estranged brothers who were former MMA fighters and their formerly alcoholic father. My wife, who is training as a therapist, said that when she first saw it she "ugly cried" for twenty minutes.
I don’t understand how you can blame Her and call her a bitch for caving in when she was being terrorized by her brother who killed their father and was clearly psychotic and threatening her sons life...to literally bathe in his blood. Any decent mothers first priority is protecting her child from harm. Maximus would have done the same for his child.
The most ahistorical aspect of this (aside from the rubber soles on the sandals) is how passive the praetorian guard was until the end. Historically, the praetorian guard was the most instrumental factor in the success or overthrow of Roman emperors.
I know I'm late to the party here, but I love this movie, no matter how historically inaccurate it is in many areas, it really doesn't matter. Great story. But I have to say, I've never seen anyone look so brutal AND so cute as Ellie does while chanting "Kill him, kill him, kill him". LOL LOVED IT! Love your content and you both are great. Thank you so much for sharing these times with us all. Keep up the great work and stay safe. A fan from San Diego, CA.
I can't believe they called Lucilla a bitch so many times. Commodus was going to kill her son. What was she supposed to do? I've never felt any animosity towards her. Commodus knew she loved Maximus. He would have suspected her eventually. And even if she told him nothing, he would have held them hostage when Maximus came back with his army.
Joaquin Phoenix should also be given credit for making Commodus despised all over the world. Playing the part of the villain is just as difficult as playing the hero. Interesting that the actual Commodus was well liked by the people of Rome, a sad statement on the character of Romans at the time. An interesting bit of info: "Citizens of Rome missing their feet through accident or illness were taken to the arena, where they were tethered together for Commodus to club to death while pretending they were giants. Privately, it was also his custom to kill his opponents during practice matches. For each appearance in the arena, he charged the city of Rome a million sesterces, straining the Roman economy. A real winner, eh?
Great reaction Homies was very nice watching one of my favorite movies with you again, thank you. What always gets me is that his sense of duty and honour is so strong he even refuses to give up even while he's on the ground. Only when the queen gives him the "command" and says "go to them" he considers his duties as fulfilled, he closes his eyes and dies.
Jack Gleeson, the actor who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones, took his inspiration for playing Joffrey from Joaquin Phoenix’s turn as Commodus in this film. This movie has a fantastic musical score that still holds up today. You know when real crying happens in acting when someone snots out of their nose instead of that beautiful, elegant crying that’s all over the place in Lord of the Rings. “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” 20 years on, and this is still fucking epic. Oliver Reed (the actor who played Proximo) died before the filming completed, so they had to alter his character’s ending. I think Ellie is way too harsh on Lucilla, who was put in a no-win situation. Commodus has all the power of Rome behind him. He’s sure to have people find Lucius if she had him hidden away. He sent men quite a distance to make sure that Maximus’s family was killed.
There are two deleted scenes you HAVE to watch and they both involve Phoenix's emperor. He should have own best supporting that year, these scenes would have won it for him. They're short but really show off his acting chops. Just found your channel, love ya both!
These two they would rather have Lucila lie to Commodus and him later finding out she lied and kill her son anyway. No reason whatsoever, she was protecting her son. the story went where it needed to go and its perfect

I suggest you guys do a reaction to “Dances With Wolves.” You will love it and we will love to see your reaction. It is very similar to the kind of movies you’ve been reacting to. One of the top 5 of all time.
"the message of the film is beautiful despite the violence in it. Despite all that we live by no longer belonging to the earthly world we will be free. We will be together."
I’m sitting here screaming because my internet was down trying to say that obviously lucious father was already said to be someone else not comodus and the woman wasn’t entirely to blame for telling the truth the other senator was allies with comodus
It's funny also. Cuz in real history this assassination plot with his sister and the senate took years, alot longer than in the movie so. The sister also waited cuz again it's her own brother so ofcourse you will hesitate. It's also the freaking Emperor of the roman empire who owns the whole world (in their perspective of the world map) and they had 25% of the whole worlds population. You are stupid if want to kill an emperor/leader without a good plan and to also think it won't bring big consequences, especially to an empire that big. Also in real history, even if Commodus was a shit, his death brought one of the biggest turmoils and crisis in history. As many civil wars and the very fall of the roman empire itself started after his death. So yes a bad dude died but millions of millions had to die and suffer through a big crisis that lasted alot of years cuz of his death.
With the emperors, things could change in a single generation. From the heights of Augustus to Tiberius. From the legend of Marcus Aurelius to Commodus.
Wow, some truly epic movie choices lately! Ridley Scott directed this, and he's actually teaming back up with Joaquin Phoenix to make a movie about Napoleon Bonaparte. Edit: I think this was an extended cut or director's cut or something, noticed a few scenes I hadn't seen before.
She couldn't have 'sent her son to another palace or something', the Guards wouldn't let ANYONE leave without the Emperor's permission, especially either of them. The guards or one of Commodus' spies would have reported it and he would have been suspicious anyway. Her mistake here was one anyone coud make, by not makeing sure her secret meeting was actually completely secret. She told Commodus the plan because he was threatening her son AND he already knew most of it anyway, just not the details. He knew who was involved because of his spies, she was just confirming it. He could have harmed the boy without killing him to make her talk and she knew it. As for Maximus, he didn't attack Commodus with that arrowhead in the arena not because Lucius would SEE it, but because the boy was IN THE WAY and might have been hurt or killed, Commodus might even have used him as a living shield, you think he wouldn't?
Fun fact: the real Commodus really did fight in the Colosseum as a gladiator for his own amusement. But it made him very unpopular with the crowd. All the games were rigged in his favour, he'd sometimes kill his opponents (by his reign, killing in a gladiator fight was considered bad sport) and it was undignified for the emperor to debase himself by fighting as a gladiator, something only done by slaves.
You two are the BEST in your reactions while watching these movies which make it a real treat to see your unbiased movie opinions now. When this movie was released you two were probably were just small toddlers.

Gladiator is such a great movie, they took elements from the story of Spartacus. The Roman era of history is interesting to me. For much as we like to think the Roman’s were civilized, they could be cruel and indifferent to the suffering of others. Ironically the world hasn’t changed much.

“On the nature of daylight” at the end of Arrival is fucking amazing too. It’s so perfect. Same bittersweet feeling as well
Oh yeah - almost anything from Enya is wonderful!
Roman emperors had food tasters, in anticipation that they would be poisoned. The very first Roman dictator, Sulla, was poisoned, so they expected it.
This movie is a magnificant tragedy in the tradition of Shakespeare. The acting is high quality and the costumes 1st class.
Highly recommend another pair of movies directed by Ridley Scott: Black Hawk Down (2001) and then Kingdom of Heaven (2005). The first about modern warfare and the second about the Crusades
YES for both!
But do the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven. Much better than the theatrical version.
@@anonimuso I agree 100%. aside from the love story it gave a lot more back story for why they did what they did.
Robin hood 2010
The fights at the start were meant to represent the fights on the Danube
He rides from Germany (or Belgium, Netherlands, etc.) to Spain. The shoe of the slavers indicates its Muslim moors who take him to North Africa.
If you haven't already watched it, try 'Cinderella Man' with Russell Crowe, a true story of a boxer during the 1930's depression, 2005.
the hate towards lucilla is crazy! the whole movie commodus is established to be utterly insane and ultra cruel when necessary. so if that man, threaten your child, you not going to push your luck or chances.any sane parent would give up the plan in favor for their kid if a madman( with ultimate power) threatens it
If you haven't seen Leon, I think that would be a great movie for you to react to, love your reactions
Man, you all really are reacting to the best movies, keep it up!
I don’t understand how you can blame
Her and call her a bitch for caving in when she was being terrorized by her brother who killed
their father and was clearly psychotic and threatening her sons life...to literally bathe in his blood.
You can’t blame the sister!!! She was protecting her child. She clearly cared about Maximus. Way too much hate directed to her.
I just LOVE that you both haven't seen this gem.
Thank you for this.
Genius on the left said she should just lock the son up for a day and half 😂
Don't expect anything from star wars fans.
Joaquin Phoenix should also be given credit for making Commodus despised all over the world. Playing the part of the villain is just as difficult as playing the hero. Interesting that the actual Commodus was well liked by the people of Rome, a sad statement on the character of Romans at the time. An interesting bit of info:
"Citizens of Rome missing their feet through accident or illness were taken to the arena, where they were tethered together for Commodus to club to death while pretending they were giants. Privately, it was also his custom to kill his opponents during practice matches. For each appearance in the arena, he charged the city of Rome a million sesterces, straining the Roman economy.
A real winner, eh?
She didn't betray Maximus.. and I can't believe he said to Ellie you can't trust a woman... WOW lol
The fact she could see within minutes Commodus is a bad man and Maximus is a good one, just shows how great the acting and directing is in the movie.
More first time reactions of films that Larry has not seen. It's better when you both don't know what's going to happen
There are two deleted scenes you HAVE to watch and they both involve Phoenix's emperor. He should have own best supporting that year, these scenes would have won it for him. They're short but really show off his acting chops. Just found your channel, love ya both!
Don’t forget Maximus rode all the way from Germania to Spain bleeding, still lived to kill Commodus
You must see Spartacus Blood and Sand. Great reaction guys! Best regards from Perú.
Ellie, absolutely love your emotional investment in this story!
I had a history professor who said Commodus was like his name--a commode.
28:03 women you can never trust women. He telling in front of a woman LMAO 😜🤣
He spits the truth...
Commodus wants to kill the family to ensure that they don't come back to take revenge for Maximus.
These two they would rather have Lucila lie to Commodus and him later finding out she lied and kill her son anyway.
No reason whatsoever, she was protecting her son. the story went where it needed to go and its perfect
I am so proud of Russel and Lisa Gerard{the singer} as they are both Australians and yes I was a dribbling mess at the end as well, a superb film one of the best I have watched, brilliant acting from a very talented cast . Great reactions you two. New subscriber, have a great Christmas and lets hope 2021 is much Kinder to us all.
Technically Russ is a New Zealander...
An old saying goes something like this " When you come at the king you best not miss" meaning you will only ever get one chance so you better make sure the time is perfect.
"faster, faster, in the yead!" gotta love Ellie 😂 Ellie is the best reactor. Larry when you started this channel with her it was very smart! ah ha
Richard Harris & Oliver Reed two freaking Legends of cinema may they RIP and be celebrated for centuries to come
- "Sorry"
- "Oh No, No Problem" 🤣🤣🤣
She's funny!
By the way, this is an uncut version? I've never seen a couple scenes that were showed in this reaction, and I've seen this movies a lot of times even with the director comment. I have to find this version.
You can get it on 4K disc from amazon for less than 20$. It includes the theatrical and the extended versions.
I dont remember the scene of the guys being executed with bows. All these years I never thought to find out if there were deleted scenes!
@@Cubs-Fan.10 Same here!
I’m not sure of your names but the beautiful woman gets so emotional at certain times and I find myself crying with her. I suggest you guys do a reaction to “Dances With Wolves.” You will love it and we will love to see your reaction. It is very similar to the kind of movies you’ve been reacting to. One of the top 5 of all time.
This girl is always crying without tears
"the message of the film is beautiful despite the violence in it. Despite all that we live by no longer belonging to the earthly world we will be free. We will be together."
the world is violent. whether we will be together with our loved ones at death or not, is not proven...it's a thought / idea that makes life easier.
I would like to recommend the tv show ROME by HBO and Spartacus in Netflix
Oh so correct!
Been thinking of watching Spartacus, is it good bro?
rome is the best serie ever made about the romans !! amen
You definitely should. It is based on a true story, and lots of action.
I just recently learned of Oliver Reed, what a character.
the real Commodus did NOT die in the arena
It's not a total true story...its a movie, but still, one of if not the best movie ever made!!!
Commodus said 'the little bee told me everything'. Lucius is the little bee. That's why she was crying - she knew she was outed.
I've never seen anyone so happy about the death of a villain)))
Ellie @ 9:58 'I hate humans'
Ellie @ 32:20 ...
With the emperors, things could change in a single generation. From the heights of Augustus to Tiberius. From the legend of Marcus Aurelius to Commodus.
This movie has it all. The word masterpiece is reserved only for films such as this one.
In Rome they went after the family to avoid vengeance.
Also in feudal japan
Ellie is too cute. It is an emotional movie but very uplifting at the same time.
She did what she had to in order to save her son. Other than that your reaction to this film was the same as mine. Joy, and sorrow, at the same time.
If Commodus was smart he would have taken Maximus's family hostage. That way he could control Maximus. Instead, he left Maximus nothing to lose.
From America thank you for the entertainment during the pandemic. I look Forward to daily uploads and love them thanks!
I did enjoy both of your reactions to this movie, you two are a real hoot to watch in your interactions with one another.
She didnt betray Maximus, the senators spied for Commodus after he heard his nephew say, "... the Savior of Rome."
Thanks for sharing you two. Hope you both have a really great Christmas and New Years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You two are the BEST in your reactions while watching these movies which make it a real treat to see your unbiased movie opinions now. When this movie was
released you two were probably were just small toddlers.
Ellie is feisty and I don't mean that in a sleazy way, just in a fun way, she gets emotionally invested so fast.:D
"It was a dream that was Rome, it shall be realized. These are the wishes of Marcus Aurelius." -
Beautiful reaction guys, this is one of my favorite movies.
Gladiator is such a great movie, they took elements from the story of Spartacus. The Roman era of history is interesting to me. For much as we like to think the Roman’s were civilized, they could be cruel and indifferent to the suffering of others. Ironically the world hasn’t changed much.
This is my favorite movie. I have three different editions of it. It's an absolute masterpiece. The soundtrack alone is mesmerizing.
