he and his father were a tap dance act when he was just a tiny kid. I saw him perform in Omaha in the 80's and he explained that he would not dance like he used to because it had taken it's tole on his joints. but he was still fantastic.

His decades long friendships with Fran Sinatra, Dick Martin as 3 leaders of The Rat Pack, did more to break the color line than any other single person, including Jackie Robinson in 20th century America. SDJ started working in the 1930s, in vaudevville. He's at LEAST as important to the Civil Rights movement as MLK--because he opened the American public's heart with his songs and films into the 1950s, so the `common man' wouldn't just dismiss MLk in the 1960s. His literally put out more than a hundred albums. Don't gloss over him and the range of all his work by just listening to Bojangles.

Sammy Davis Jr was a class act and one of the top performers in America. He started performing when he was 2 years old in 1927 with his family. He was a huge superstar and had hit songs into the 70s. Michael Jackson indeed was influenced in part by Sammy Davis Jr. As a kid in the 70s, I could see he was a special kind of man from the way my parents and grandparents would admire him on TV. I remember this song because I would hear it on the radio in my Mom's car. I had heard it so often that I knew almost every word. I was a kid and I liked this song, Mr Bojangles seemed like a real person to me. A friend of mine down the street had a cat named Mr Bojangles. Sammy Davis Jr is a legend and his life story is fascinating, heartbreaking, and triumphant.

Check out these from Sammy Davis Jr.: "The Birth of the Blues". ( video on floating staircase). " Old Man River" (video sitting on stage). "What Kind of fool Am I" ( video). And this video from the movie, "Robin and the 7 Hoods" called "Bang Bang"....it showcases Danny's singing and dancingbabilities)
Sammy started in Vaudeville, with his dad and Uncle, at the age of 3. ( The Will Mastin Trio). Sammy was an entertainer extraordinaire. He could sing, dance, act, do impressions, comedy, and played several instruments including the piano, vibraphone, some horns and was an excellent drummer. ( there is video of this)
Sammy was in many movies, tv shows, Broadway musicals, starred in nightclubs in the U.S. and in Europe. and in Las Vegas. He was part of a group of entertainers called " The Rat Pack" with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.
Frank Sinatra: "Fly Me To The Moon". " My Way". Frank was a huge singing star and also acted in many movies.
He had his own tv show briefly.
Dean Martin : "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" ( video). "Volare". " Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" ( video)
Dean was a phenomenal singer, acted in many movies ( Rio Bravo is a favorite) and had his own tv variety show
for many years. He was also very funny. He also hosted a show called "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast"
" Bojangles" was a real person named Bill Robinson. Bojangles was his nickname. He was an exceptional tap dancer and also danced and acted in several movies. Check him out with little Shirley Temple in the movie "The Little Colonel" ( video of them dancing up and down a staircase.)
Sammy was in a serious car accident and lost an eye. It was Frank Sinatra that paid all of Sammy's medical bills and then took him under his wing, and helped to break the color barrier that wouldn't cost black entertainers sleep or eat in the same hotel shot clubs they performed in. Frank said, "If Sammy can't stay and eat here with the rest of us, then we won't perform here". Since Frank was a big star he carried a lot of weight, the owners let Sammy sleep and dine in their establishments.

You should look at his performance as "Sporting Life" in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess -- an opera based on "Carmen", with all Black characters. It was made into a film directed by Otto Preminger in 1958, with Sidney Poitier in the lead role. Sammy Davis ran afoul of the Ku Klux Klan, when he married a Swedish actress in 1960 -- back then, interracial marriages were illegal in 31 US states. He was also good friends with Frank Sinatra and a political activist, supporting John F. Kennedy and the Democrats. A great man, with incredible talent and a wonderful voice.

Sammy was born to entertainers. He grew up on the road and started tap dancing at about 4 or 5. He never received a formal education. He was an entertainer extraordinaire, a one man show. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was one of his idols. Check out the video Bill Bojangles stair dance. He was about 54 when it was filmed.

Sammy was part of what was called The Rat Pack. It included Sammy, Frank Sinatra. Dean Martin. Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Sammy was the only black in the group. Sinatra was a very famous dinner and alleged to have mob ties. Dean Martin was a duo who sang and acted with Jerry Lewis. Both talented singers.

There is footage on here of him on the Michael Parkinson show with his friend Buddy Rich, also of him tap dancing with Gregory Hines, well worth watching. He also starred with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in the 1960s version of Oceans 11, they were all great friends and members of what was known as The Rat Pack.

This song was written by Jerry Jeff Walker about Bill Bojangles Robinson. He was an actor and the dancer, but he got famous in the movies with Shirley Temple who is a six or seven-year-old girl who is the number one box office attraction of the 30s. They made several movies together, and they did many famous dancestogether, you can see them on TH-cam if you search Shirley Temple and Bill Bojangles Robinson it’s worth checking out

It's not about Bill Robinson. Jerry Jeff wrote this about a guy he met in the drunk tank.

This song is not, repeat not, about Bill Robinson. "Mr. Bojangles is not about the great Bill "Bojangles" Robinson". Mr. Bojangles" is a song originally written and recorded by country music artist Jerry Jeff Walker for his 1968 album of the same title. Walker has said he was inspired to write the song after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail and that the song does not refer to the famous stage and movie personality Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Walker said while in jail for public intoxication in 1965, he met a homeless white man who called himself "Mr. Bojangles" to conceal his true identity from the police. He had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance. Keep in mind prisoners at that time were segregated by color so Walker, who is white, would not have been in a cell/cell-block with Black prisoners.
