I came here because I've been observing a serotinous species pinus attenuata, and the cones do open via solar exposure. The tree also propagates due to winter storm breakage. I'm shocked to read in many studies that the ONLY method of propagation is fire, which disregards other methods. Interesting video! I'm also from northern Maine!
Really interesting. I know fire is critical to forest health. In the PNW we used to clear cut then burn off the slash back in the 60's and 70's. When you think about it, true de-forestation can only happen with a fire. With all the "new" forest management processes NOT clear cutting and burning, it makes me wonder if the old timers had something going good in actually replicating the natural process?
Those "noise cancelling" microphones make no sense outdoors in quiet places. Also trying to use them to pick up the sizzling of the pine cone is totally lost, man.

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing.
Will the burning pine cone explode? Will it fly 20 meters away? Will it cause another fire?

They arent noise cancelling. though
