    I think Broadway can still be emotive. Just like screen acting, the artists channel emotions from their own experiences to better embody the story. However, Broadway singers do express emotion differently than both screen actors or traditional pop singers because their expressions need to be dramatic enough to be viewed from a stage. I think the disconnect between pop audiences and Broadway singers is more so the vocal style than facial expressions or mannerisms.

      I disagree, for writers, they are telling their stories through the music they sing such as Mariah Carey. She writes her songs based on what she goes through and how she feels at specific seasons of her life. Which many great writers do.

    I think that a broadway singer should be able to move you for sure! They are literally telling a story. If an actor cant make you feel what they are trying to convey, they aren't an effective actor. When it comes to natalie, I dont personally feel that connection but someone else might and thats totally fine! I dont think she is quite as versed in acting though, she is more about the vocal perfection than the emotional delivery to me

    The problem with Broadway singers is that they seldom allow themselves to be anything but flawless, and like Christina said there's beauty in the imperfections as well. But singing so flawlessly all the time doesn't allow for certain emotions to be conveyed, particularly sadness and pain.

      I think there is truth in what you say, but in the musicals I have watched I have seen some inperfections vocally that give more emotion. (Like screaming or crying during the verses) Lots of broadway performers put acting before singing.

    • @ieltcsn4712
      @ieltcsn4712 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The thing is that, in broadway (or in any form of Musical Theatre), there is this principle called "Clarity over Emotions". They need to be their role, and do proper emoting within that role, while keeping theirselves "very" technical. Every movement and every words need to be emphasized and animated. Everything needs to be clear so that each of the audiences, near or far from the stage, can understand. But you cannot say they aren't emoting well. Emotional singing is more than just whining, cracking, growling, whispering or slurring words and notes in a vocal performance. They can still provide technically "flawless" performance while adding "appropriate" texture to their voice to be able to show the emotions of a song.

    • @andread9807
      @andread9807 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s loads of broadway singers who are great emoters! Example, shosana bean. There’s a video out there explaining to a student that acting comes first then singing. When she sings “she used to be mine”. It’s amazing th-cam.com/video/KSx6U8jtOpk/w-d-xo.html And Jessie muller, the original actor for Jenna in waitress. th-cam.com/video/Erjdq6wwRuU/w-d-xo.html. And my favourite, the one that always makes me cry, from Hamilton. Phillipa soo does an fantastic job making the audience feel sadth-cam.com/video/ScfvM_DIuy4/w-d-xo.html

    I wish you've added more Demi's performances, she is really open about her personal struggles and she shows so much vulnerability and truth. If you don't cry while watching her perform songs like sober, skyscraper or anyone, you have no soul. Even when she is singing songs about personal relationships like Stone Cold and Smoke and Mirrors she can move you. Also she can move you even when she is singing a song that is not hers, she really takes her covers to another level adding agressive vocals like when she did with Take Me to Church, Stay and Hello

  • @michellejarone2007
    @michellejarone2007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One thing an actor does to cry on cue (at least some actors) is think of a sad experience and use that to motivate the tears. I believe a singer can do the same. If someone who has never had a miscarriage is singing a song that alludes to that, i believe they can still deliver the emotion necessary by calling onto their own experiences of loss in life. Just because a singer hasn’t necessarily experienced something a song is about, doesn’t mean they aren’t still singing with genuine emotion.

    I just want to say some other things relating to this video. So singers use vocals and add little bits to use in the words. They use vocal fry and whining (this was not mentioned in the video), which shows a sad type of emotion. Also, the higher the key the performer is singing in, the less emotion they show. This is mainly because the emotion can cause some trouble reaching the high notes that the performer is trying to reach. Like sadness, for example. When you cry, it’s harder to breathe than when you're not crying, because when you cry, it causes your throat to squeeze. The vocalist must keep their throat as wide as possible in order to produce the sound they are going for. If you read this all the way, thank you for your time.

    I was fighting about timbre based and technique based main vocals(in kpop, that's pretty obvious) amd that person started mentioning Girl's day Minah and called her a powerful interpreter but a useless member technically.
    Then mentioned how much her voice is raspy and cracks a lot,also said her airyness was irritating (in songs where it's obvious to be more emotional and interpretative than a technical beast) and didn't allow me to point out that,then that person mentioned how "plain and flat" Sohyang's performances are despite being a technical goddess,so i said "no singer seems to be good enough for you,each singer independently of it's genre has certain intentions and personal focus on what they do for their performances,no singer should be perfect because that would be imposible and plain"
    Guess who blocked who first

    What makes a singer a great emoter is their level of authenticity, IMO. When you hear Mary J. Blige sing and/or watch her perform, she is giving you 100% Mary. Not theatrics, no vocally showing off, not trying to put on a show, she's is giving you genuine Mary and you can feel whatever emotion she's expressing within that song. Same with singers like Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Pink, and a few others.

    In my personal opinion, about the last point if someone thinks broadway preformers can't show emotion properly they probably haven't watched a musical. That is literally their job. I do get what you mean though they are more focused on tecnically better singing (because they have to sing SO MUCH and their tecnique is there to have them be able to do so) but I have watched many broadway preformers who do in fact put emotion and acting before singing, they scream or cry during their songs! I feel more emotions in broadway shows because I know the story of why the caracter feels how they feel and such. :)

    When it comes to Broadway, it all honestly depends on their acting skill. Most Broadway singers are perfectly amazing, but their acting can come across as disingenuous if there's a disconnection between the lyrics and the emotions themselves. Singers like Natalie Weiss who's probably one of the most proficient singers at the moment, or Barbra Streisand who was one of the most prolific singers at her prime, do nothing to me. They're singers first, actors second, and their performances show that. Focusing too much on technique can easily impact the emotions that you're trying to portray. Natalie likes to be inside her head too much, and while she's almost unbelievable when it comes to singing, her acting/interpretation suffers due to it.
    There are exceptions, however, with Broadway singers such as Cynthia Erivo, Shoshana Bean or Jeremy Jordan. They can act and sing a phone book, and I'll be on the other side of the screen bawling my eyes out. These artists can create a perfect balance between acting and singing without sacrificing neither aspect, all the while offering a genuine experience through their entire performance. They select the emotion they want, evaluate the story, then use their vocal skills to deliver the message to the listeners. Most of the time, what gets me are the subtle gestures, the body movements, or the small vocal quirks that they use to express normal human-inflections for emphasis in their storytelling. All of that, to me, is what separate singers from SANGERS.

    By Broadway, do you mean musicals?? There's more to the world of musicals thsh just America ha. A good actor will make you forget they're acting and to he honest, often pop singers are acting on stage too of they have an alter ego or they write a song about a fictional event

    I wish Regine Velasquez was here. She is a great storyteller. Her performances of Sometime Somewhere (where she wears a yellow dress) and What Kind of Fool Am I (where she's wearing a red dress while sitting on the floor). Regine takes you on a journey with her in the song. She is one of the reasons why many singers here in the Philippines are so good on doing emotional singing e.g. Morissette.

    As I observed, some Broadway singers are just acting, and sometimes it's annoying or funny when they try to sing a pop song, others MEAN it like Shoshana Bean or Cynthia Erivo.
    (It might be subjective but sometimes I feel like they are just doing hand gestures and pauses they learned in acting school, and others USE their real life experiences. People are very different, but I spent way too much time observing wether they are moved or not LOL)

    Who says what musical actors sing is not Real???? I kinda feel offended by this statement that musical theatre actors are less authentic and real! The really good “actors” really feel it it’s the truth for them too or they couldn’t portrait a character very good... so I guess you never saw a very good performance or you wouldn’t have suggested that actors aren’t real!
