    I just finished watching the movie, I found it to be very moving, extremely profound and quite thought provoking. Leda, stealing the doll, keeping it for so long, the manner in which she treated the doll when she had it in her possession, then, to give the doll up in such a nonchalant manner when it no longer served her purpose, was basically reminiscent of Leda's dealings with her actual children. It also struck a cord on another level, much like the main character in this story, many people bring children into this world for all of the wrong reasons. When asked why she took the doll in the first place, Leda's answer of "I don't know why," spoke volumes to me, Nina's crazy reaction also spoke volumes to me. I am sure that this film, The Lost Daughter, is definitely one movie that I will watch many times over and each time I do, I will gain something worth while.

      Ah you've educated me here...I was so on edge when she would just leave the doll out when people came into the house, as she really didn't care. But I see that the doll actually represented how she felt about her own children

      Very impressive but too long. Moving, profound, excessive, slow and boring. I guess after awhile every symbol or flashback just becomes boring and repetitive. The critics gave it 90% and the audience gave it 45%. It is not like the general audience doesn't get it thought they will not get the highest brow comments or references because wow Maggie you are so smart!. And "Living on a Prayer" is a mediocre song (though catchy) though maybe it's meaningful. If a movie is to have substance, use substantive songs. I realize the scene didn't call for Dylan. I think Maggie's chose an actress who looks like her. I was impressed with her but I was impressed with The Deer Hunter before Heaven's Gate flop.

    The fact that both Maggie and Olivia agree that a glass lamp shaped like a woman would make a great trophy is so funny because of this scene in Fleabag. There's this trophy to the "best woman in business", Fleabag replaces it with a statue (that Olivia's character hand made) that looks really similar to the lamp and there's a whole rant about how it represents only a woman by its bodily appearance and nothing else.
    I think it's quite funny.

(At least Maggie cleaned house at the Spirits.) As for this interview, I like how silly and fun they are talking about a fairly dark movie. Thought provoking film. Funny enough my interpretation of it has been evolving since I’ve watched it 3 days ago. Even though Leda was struggling, she had a loving family and husband. Her vulnerability was manipulated by the bearded older professor whom I believe behaved like the typical young women predator. I’ve met a few hence recognising it so sharply. She had to live with mixed feelings about herself afterwards and a sense of being a bad mother, but clearly she was manipulated by this self indulging man who took her on for a period for his pleasure and amusement. You may argue that she wasn’t a victim, she knew what she was doing but I couldn’t agree. She was overwhelmed by motherhood and needed support by family and peers. These older men who wreck so many women’s lives aren’t made accountable. They want the fun without the responsibility, they utterly disgust me.

    • @robsteen7407

      @annwe6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@robsteen7407 I disagree, the OPs view point is valid, however, it's only a single facet of an emotionally sprawling and complex film. Professor predators are a real thing. Ask any of the many 1000's of young women who get groomed and preyed upon by their professors in colleges around the world every single semester. The storytelling in this movie was exceptionally tight and every scene held multiple layers of meaning, including the ones between Leda and the Professor. She chose him AND he used his power to prey on her. The two realties are not mutually exclusive.

I agree with you, the perception I have of the world and personal experience as had an influence on my interpretation but I’m not writing an academic paper so I guess there is no right or wrong, only feelings , I was a mother at 39 and have always made sure I wouldn’t have children at the wrong time and with the wrong people, this resulted in 3 abortions. I’m conscious of what being a responsible and caring mother entails. I believe she tried her best in the film but was young and didn’t have enough support. She may have been only selfish, but I rather not go down that route, I just don’t want to, it’s my choice. I appreciate what you said. The only thing I could possibly add is every location should have a local economy and also local resources in a drought. I mean all resources like food, medicines, alternative fuel for heating, alternative source for electricity and or solar power. We should also stock up on a 90 day supply. I have also thought of what you said and also can foods and can meats. I feel like I'm a hypocrite saying this because for me it's only an idea and I have not put it into practice. I know interest rates are a way to measure other things that will change . I also consider the factor of lost currency 💵 into crypto. Many people lost a log in or break a phone or tablet and never recover funds. This may help the value of a cryptocurrency but it hurts over all economy. I'm also considering many young and undisciplined people gambling to third world countries who never show a return in global markets . Maybe these things are small but I believe over time it adds up.

    i wanted to love this film so much, but in the end i didn’t at all.. for me the movie falls flat as an absurd existentialism of a weird selfish mother, while we have no idea why she acts like that; bipolar maybe? or why, if she cannot live with her own child and husband, have another child.. or getting deadly upset with unfinished masturbation.. all of us mothers can snap or see often our careers or dreams fly away, but to leave for 3 years is beyond absurd, unless the person is deeply sick, which wasn’t said.. i was thinking about comparison to men and their leavings, unfinished self pleasing, flirting etc., but moms, and i don’t care if i’ll be called a sexist, have a ‘special bond’ with child, if they are ‘normal’.. the sacrifice for and life in kids’ realm is the most beautiful and rewarding thing mom can live through.. maybe i’m wrong but that is what happened to me and women i know.. that should be investigated in film, for me, why she doesn’t have this bc ‘not a natural mom’ here ended only as an silly excuse of narrative.. another‘unnatural’ mom is a ‘barren’ character of dakota johnson.. but she still finding her time and energy to make up with the first guy willing to do so.. the greek mythology reference came to me then as something pretentious even if i like the overall ‘art approach’.. the movie ‘the power of the dog’ was, in my opinion much better, superb, scored high by critics and viewers together, a masterpiece, yet no one is talking about it.. ‘the lost girl’ scored very low with the audience, and, for me, what is left here is an arty hollow self absorbed project of a great ambition

    I wanted to love this film (because I love Olivia Coleman) but this was one of the most boring and pointless films I have ever watched and I felt I had wasted 2 hours of my life after watching it. The actors tried their best ... but the script was dire. As far as Maggie's directorial debut was concerned ... sorry, it was definitely style over substance. She did not do justice to the original poignant novel at all.

      @@barbaracevasco Nope. That's not the reason. I can appreciate good films just fine. For example, I can appreciate a good thriller without being a murderer.

    Just watched the movie. Olivia Coleman is a great actress, but this is a pile of pretentious pseudo art house crap.

    We have a moral duty not to comply. No to discriminatory vaccine passports and mandates, it is an utter disgrace. This must not happen England. Will never vote Labour or Tory again. Disgraceful
