When I installed my Lollar Blackface set, I set the pickup height roughly where I thought they should be by memory. When I plugged it in, each pickup matched the others in volume (and pretty well balanced tonally too one to the next). Best balanced strat set I have ever played. The Imperials on my Les Paul were also the same way.

Holy smokes. I still have my Waynes World Squier, which was my first guitar when I was 10 (now 40), and I'm looking to swap the pickups. I think it's a sign that I need to go with the Sixty-Fours.

Kevin Moe, Ha ha mate Welcome to Auckland New Zealand, Love these pickups loved the look loved the sound, loved the guitar (I have one of the first ones of the Fender/japan Squires. Just a small hint, If you come over to NZ to do a demo of these, It might be a good idea to wear "Safety Glasses" Just saying

You said closer = Brighter, in my experience closer equals warmer.... am I wrong ?

As the pickup gets closer, the "lens" of what it can pick up in the strings' vibration is narrowed so it can't pick up the broader lower frequencies, only the shorter higher harmonics. What you've probably experienced is a hotter signal, causing a bit more compression at the front end of the amp.

Hey Lollar folks…. I have a ‘88-‘89 MIJ strat. Same color as the one in your video (not relevant, of course!!)
Were the old pots (and harness) the smaller, dime-size? I think so, but it happens so fast it’s hard to judge.
If so, did you have futz with the pick guard hole size during this installation?

That's actually very astute of you to notice. Yes, they were the smaller (metric) pots originally. We actually overlooked that detail in the planning stage of this video and just grabbed the standard pots that we have on-hand. So, when it came time to do the swap - while already in the middle of the video shoot - we had to decide whether we wanted to scrap the progress, go back to the beginning and start all over, this time addressing the difference or if we would rather just make it work on the fly. We decided to go ahead and make it work. That meant choosing between reaming the holes, re-using the original pots, or swapping the whole pickguard out for one with standard-sized holes that we already had in the shop. We elected to just swap out the pickguard.
We didn't intend to try to fool anyone with this or anything, we just had hours already poured into the setup and filming when we hit this wall in mid-process. We didn't address it in the video because we didn't want to have to try to explain all of what I just explained and risk making some folks more confused by the matter than really necessary. Hopefully the general idea of the video still proves helpful to our viewers.

@@LollarPickups thank you for the extra info. I didn’t think you were trying to fool us 😀. I’m just trying to organize the work involved with replacing my pickups with your. (I’ve decided on Blond Specials). Now, just have to save up my gig money. 😜

You don't even have a telecaster pickup installation on your channel? seriously?

Thanks for bringing this up. We don't really do a whole lot of videos like that, mostly because it's so straightforward and there are already a ton of videos like that online. Maybe we will focus on this sort of content at some point, it's good to know what folks want to see.
