    My first medium Makrolon Lamy 2000 arrived today. Wanted one of these for so long. It's an instant hit and everything people rave about this is spot on. I cannot think of a single fault with this. I have many piston fillers but none of them have an invisible join. I don't know how Lamy pulled this off but it's like magic. Excellent pen in every regard.

    The lamy 2000 is one of my favorite pens. I picked one up in a fine nib from their brick and mortar store and have to agree the design is timeless. The makrolon is my favorite finish because it reminds me of wood and I like that it doesn't feel cold like metal pens!!
    Love the reviews as usual! So informative and the closeups and writing samples are so helpful

    FYI David. Makrolon is a polycarbonate plastic, which is made by Bayer. Fibreglass is used to reinforce the polycarbonate.

    I'm new to fountain pens and I had no idea this pen design was 50 years old! I thought it was made maybe a few years ago, that's amazing.
    Do you have a video showing your entire pen collection? I saw glimpses in your Q&A, but I'd love a more detailed video maybe by brand or price range. Thanks!

    This is an excellent review of an excellent pen! I love the history of Lamy and Bauhaus and Mueller that you included. Uncanny how much the pen looks like the Braun shaver!! You nearly always include some very interesting background information that makes your reviews better than most all out there! Kudos!

    I have to say that the ink window is so subtle that for the longest time I didn't know it had one and thus wasn't interested. Since I learned it has one, I have been getting more interested. I'm actually rather surprised that it's so light, I would have expected it to be much heavier. And I'm glad to see it's similar in dimensions to the Studio, which I adore. I am a bit worried about the sweet spot, since I've noticed a tendency to roll my pens a bit. I will have to test this pen in person some time I think.
    Thank you for the great review!
    Oh and btw, "Braun" is pronounced more like "brown" (which is the translation) or maybe "broun" (think noun with br at the beginning) rather than "brawn" :)

    • @patrick6190
      @patrick6190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this reply is probably very much outdated, but maybe someone else reads it and gets some use out of it:
      I also tend to roll my pens which is a big issue for me. The lamy 2000 helps preventing that issue with the two metal edges on the grip section entirely for me. I hold the pen with three fingers, two of them rest on the metal edges while writing, which gives me stability and prevents rolling because my fingers can't slide together. The lamy 2000 is there perfect pen for me :)

    Good pen and good review. I have mine with F nib, which resembles 'fine-italic' since the tip of the nib is flattened . Once I used to write with I carry it everywhere. With good flowing ink this pen does the job done. Is pretty, sturdy, takes reasonable amount of ink, easy to maintain and dissemble (beware of small metal ring which is easy to loose) and decent size.

    David, I've yet to find any penfluencer contemproary that does not care for this mastefful design concept, & I agree with your assertion that, even tho' this scribe is over half a century old, it shall still be revered as innovative & iconic for many years ro come; fundamentally, it'll never get old. Excellent overview - thank you !

    In what is likely a testament to its timeless Bauhaus design, at least one of my two has been inked and active in rotation since I first got it, oh must be over 10 years ago. I like the feel, the weight and the overall size (though a little small for my hand). In my experience, there are two small flaws in the 2000. First, is the small sweet spot (magnified in my EF nib) and the second is the posting. While initially secure, the cap loosens in my hand as I write and threatens to topple off after a few minutes of writing.

    Just examined one and I still Montblanc is king of the pen industry. I will never buy a MB due to finances but was gifted one and after handling the Lamy it doesn’t feel as nice as the MB. Probably due to the resin and finish on a MB it never gets that oily feel but has nice feel. Also the Lamy is scratched like my Pelikan from capping. MB had a little rubber condom like piece that’s inserted into the cap so it doesn’t scratch the end of your pen like most do.
    Again I know I shouldn’t compare the two due to price point because MB is on another level when it comes to feel and overall mystique and experience.

    This was my first real fountain pen so it is memorable. Beware that you don't lose the metal O-ring when disassembling to flush the pen!!! Those 2 tiny metal protuberances that secure the cap are part of the O-ring.

    Great review.
    I have the same Lamy 2000, two Lamy Safaris, and a couple other Lamys. The 2000 is a great pen and writes extremely well. The only issue is the comfort in MY hand. The shape and size just does not work for me.
    So i bought two Lamy Safaris. They fit my hand perfectly. They are comfortable and look great. They are excellent EXCEPT for the steel nib. I don’t like steel nibs. So I spent $100 each for Lamy gold nibs. Now they are perfect! I love them. Pilot Iroshizuku Take-sumo (black) is in one and Tsuki-yo (Dark blue) in the other. Love them.
    Why spend $130 for a $30 pen? Because the combo pen and nib give me what I want. And that feeling has not changed in the years since I bought them. Every time I use one, it tells me, “Dan, you made a damn-fine choice!”

  • @bikkies
    @bikkies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't have one of these - maybe one day - but this makes for an interesting comparison with the much cheaper Kaco Edge, of which I own two. I can immediately tell which is the better pen. The Edge is texturally and aesthetically pleasing but once I put it to paper, it doesn't stand out from the crowd. The sweet-spot discussion is interesting. I write with both hands and that would mean a pen which is so fussy and precise could become a bit of a chore. I could probably use my many Safaris with my foot or dangled from a piece of string and they would still write flawlessly.

    One day I'll get a 2000. It's increasingly tempting to me. It looks gorgeous and a complete timeless design classic. One thing does strike me though. As you say this has a sweet spot, it does sound like there's a fair amount of feedback when writing. That isn't necessarily a problem for me, but I don't think I would be able to "try before I buy" and I adore my much more affordable Lamy pens for their ultra smooth writing experience. I'd be concerned to find a premium pen like the 2000 being scratchy or grippy.

      @@Michael-sc8if I was very pleased, both with the pen itself and with the service from Goulet Pens. The pen is very smooth though I've found it writes better with Quink than Lamy Black, which is a little dry. I have yet to try a Noodler's Eel ink in it but am tempted to do so, for its lubricating properties.

    I really like the spring clip and capping feel. I do love a hooded nib, and this is an iconic one. I have not had any nib creep w mine. I so enjoy a pen that posts without back weighting the pen.
    I also enjoy the feel of the Macrolon, and how it reacts with the oils on the hand.

    I would like an EF nib but don't want two identical pens in my collection. I would love to see the company fix the nib creep issue, if possible, and offer the 2000 with a yellow gold nib, clip, grip section, and metal part on the flat end of the piston knob OR a new body color.

    Just a little suggestion to Lamy 2000 users who find a bit of difficulty with the nib’s “sweet spot.” The Oblique Medium (OM), Oblique Broad (OB), and Oblique Double Broad (OBB) all write beautifully and do not seem nearly as critical as the traditional nibs regarding the “sweet spot.”

    Really nice review of a classic pen.
    Just some constructive criticism, on another note - I really think your reviews would benefit from a better quality microphone. You've got some really nice, professional-looking photos, and some really well-written and spoken reviews, but the audio quality just doesn't match up. Sometimes you can really hear how "digital" or "robotic" the audio sounds. I'd happily donate some money towards something better!

    The stainless steel is not in the same league as the Macrolon, because it is way to heavy for extended writing. It is more of a underwriting pen. Quick signature and done. The stainless steel is even heavier than a Diplomat. Yes its gorgeous, and amazingly heavy.

      There are tons of pictures out there online that show what the material looks like up close. I would compare those with what you received. If for some reason it is significantly different, then you can show the difference to the seller. If you purchased the pen from an authorized Lamy dealer, I would say the chances of forgery is very low.

Do I lay the pen down horizontally? or do I hold it up vertically (nib up or down)? And is it supposed to tell me how much ink there is...or is it more of a binary "You have ink" vs "You don't have ink" type thing?

      I've never found the ink window on the 2k to be particularly helpful. It's a bit dark, and tough to see the ink level. I usually need to hold it up to a light in order to get a good view, and even while doing so (like you said), it's more of a binary 1/0 kind of thing. Glad to hear you're enjoying your new pen.

    Great video! How does the medium nib of the Lamy 2000 compare to a Montblanc 146 medium nib in terms of line width and wetness?

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both the line width and wetness are greater on my 2k.

    What if you want to change the ink color on the Lamy 2000? Wouldn't you need to clean it thoroughly like any other pen, or will you undergo a lot of grief to do so.

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just rinse-cycle it multiple times like any other piston filler.

    I know my comment is very late, but i hope you reply to me, sir. Lamy 2000 vs Pilot 823 both in medium, which would you pick purely based on how smooth the nibs are. I am looking to buy one of the two, i dont care for the design of either pen or what they offer, i just want the smoothest nib i can buy between these two. What are your thoughts?

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a rather difficult question to answer as you posed it. There are many different factors that go into the "smoothness" of a nib. Especially since there are varying tipping sizes. Typically an EF will not be as smooth as a B for the same pen. On top of that...just about any nib can be made to be as smooth as you wish.

    hi, is this Pen an edc product or is a 'table' product that need of some care? How ofte is dirt the Steel part when you open the Pen? thx

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great EDC pen. I find the amount of ink on the feed varies depending on the ink being used. It might just be my pen though...your experience might be different and you might not get any cap seepage at all.

      Thank you sir, i'm engineer and sometimes i'm in field, is this Pen robust, not for break glass or to use like an hammer but to run in my pocket?

    • @FigbootonPens

      It's a pretty sturdy pen. The Macralon doesn't scratch up that easily. The isn't the strongest, but works just fine.

    Hi, may I ask how to expel unwanted ink in this pen please?

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have found the best method to rinse out a pen is to have a little cup in a sink with warm running water. Just keep filling and expelling the ink with clean water, and eventually the ink will be all gone.

    Massdrop has this pen for 103.00. Should I buy it? Is it worth that much?

    • @hackersunited2000
      @hackersunited2000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that matters is whether or not _you_ think it's worth it, and also whether you have the means to spend the money for it without too much financial strain. $103.00 is significantly lower than retail price, and about $50 lower than the prices you can find on the internet. If you're uncertain, watch a few other reviews from people whose tastes are similar to your own. Massdrop's drops usually reappear a while after they've ended, so if you have the means, you can try to go to a local pen show and try out a Lamy 2000 for yourself before buying one. If you're sure you're going to like it, then I suggest buying it. $103.00 is a great price for a great, classic pen.
