I loose my grip when using the stainless version. It is somehow not very stable for me and during writing the pen goes everywhere except at the place where I want the nib to be placed on the paper. I use some washi tape on the barrel for better grip. This helps, but out of the box the Lamy 2000 stainless version does not work for me. Not good for long writing sessions, good for scribbling away.

What did yours ultimately have in it? The pen itself was in a soft plastic sheathe, sat atop the tray (and threaded through the little ribbon thing.

It also says 1 or 2, which tells you which tool cavity was used. I don’t personally have much experience with Lamy’s warranty process. I tried getting a replacement nib at one point from them, but it wasn’t covered.

I have 2 in makrolon. The cap is the weak link and the only part of the pen likely to crack. Honestly, it's a lean mean writing machine. I would take steel for durability.
@@blaiseutube I haven’t had the cap break on me, but have had the over molded grip section crack (which is thinner than the rest of the pen). I wish they did reinforce the bottom of the cap with a band.
I own both the Makralon and stainless steel versions of this Lamy model, and I like both of them. However, for longer writing sessions, I prefer the Makralon edition. Its lighter weight allows for a more lively and less tiring writing experience, especially when posting both pens.
I still think the 2000 is a nice pen but I cannot get past the problem I have with the grind of the nib. It is very quirky. I like my Jinhao 80 and it uses the Lamy Safari nib.

Good to hear! I heard several TH-camrs say that the Makrolon version isn't the same after you disassemble it. My steel Lamy 2000 is arriving in a few days and I can't wait to use it.
The only time I’ll consider a ‘boring/uninspiring’ Lamy 2000 (irrespective of how good a writer it is) is when someone is kind enough to gift me one.. Even then I may request them “Could I have the Stainless version please ?” 😉
You are obviously in the minority since the 2000 is going on it’s 57th year of “boring/uninspiring” design. I consider the majority of fountain pens garish and over-“designed”. To each his own.
When my employer closed his stationary shops I spent half a months salary. 50% off for anything except Mont Blanc (which only got 30%) was too tempting. A 150€ stainless steel Lamy 2000 was one of my chosen ones. I still consider sending it in to get a different nib size.

I like a heavy pen so the weight is not a problem, but the fact that it doesn't post smoothly or easily is a real issue for me.
I don’t find posting the stainless steel version to feel different than the Makrolon, but the weight of the steel cap did make it feel more back weighted.
I'm beginning to wonder whether the failure of my stainless steel 2000 to post securely could be an idiosyncrasy of my own pen, rather than a generic fault with all of them. If so, I wonder whether anything could be done about it. I've had it for many years, so it's long run out of the guarantee period, but just wondering whether some technician could sort the issue out.@@ForTheLoveOfPens
@@laurameszaros9547 you could take a look inside the cap to see if any of the leaf springs are bent out of shape. Otherwise I’d suggest contacting Lamy. They are pretty responsive to sending spare parts (with the exception of the nib)
Can you change the locking position/lugs on the markolon version too by changing the initial turning position like that you showed on this steel one?and won't this make problem in capping the pen ?
The Steel version has this spring attached to the barrel, so you can change how the section is oriented to the tabs. The Makrolon has the spring attached to the section itself. Also in terms of how this affects capping, it won't make a difference. Inside the cap is a groove for these tabs to latch onto, and that groove goes all the way around the cap.

I have two Makrolon pens (fountain and roller ball) and a stainless steel (fountain) on my desk. 95% of the time I grab for the stainless steel.

I have the stainless fountain pen and a makralon ballpoint, the stainless pen is stunning and I love the heft of it.❤👍

I agree. While the stainless steel is beautiful and feels luxurious, it can be a bit heavy for extended use
I forgot to suggest that Lamy switch from heavy stainless steel to lightweight titanium. It would make for a much more pleasant writing experience.

The steel version seems designed to be disassembled, which is reason enough to get it over the makrolon version.

Stainless steel looks only marginally better. I like the precise engineering but there’re ugly. Look like throwaway pens you find at a dollar store🤣
I think it is hard to justify the extra price for the stainless steel model. That is, unless you highly value a heavy pen.
