How to Root & Propagate Monstera & Philodendron, Part 3 | Care Guide, Rooting & Propagation | Ep 69

  • Rooting and propagating monstera and philodendron can be as fulfilling as it is challenging. In this 3 part series, I review all my thoughts and tips regarding the process. I discuss frequent questions I get asked as well as considerations I rarely see mentioned. We go from several cuttings propagating in water to its transition to spagnum moss or a perlite-heavy aroid mix, and then see what to do when the cutting matures.

    I’m so glad that you did this series. I wish that you did this six months ago though, so I didn’t have to feel so helpless and struggled in the dark. Out of ignorance, I bought a single leave single node unrooted albo cutting online in early October of 2019 for $175. After propagating it in water for two weeks, it developed stem rot just like what was shown in part one of your video. I contacted the seller and was instructed to cut the rotted portion off. But he didn’t tell me to let the cutting air dry overnight. I put it back in water immediately. Surely enough, more rot developed from the same spot after a few weeks, so I cut more. Eventually, I was cutting really close to the node where the single leave was growing out of. During this whole time, there were only two little finger like roots about 0.5” long growing out of the aerial root on the node but no water root whatsoever! I sent pictures to the seller again to get advice. He told me that the cutting was not going to survive in his opinion. I was really mad, but I didn’t give up. I kept the cutting in water for another month and a half then moved it into moss. After being in moss for one month, I pulled it out to examine the roots. To my surprise, they doubled in size. The amazing thing was that the single leave (which happened to be almost a half moon leave) had no blemish and still looked like the first day I received it. So, I decided to take a chance with moving it into soil. That was early January. I hold my breath and waited for a miracle..... Three months passed, at the beginning of April, a tiny shoot emerged out of the soil. The skinny stem kept growing taller that it looked more like a single bean sprout than a monstera! So I thought that it must have been a weed seed accidentally got into the soil and now germinating. Until a couple days ago, a tiny tiny leave of the size of half of a penny unfurled. Now I could see that it is actually a variegated “half moon” leave just like her mommy. There was no word to describe the joy I felt! You’re right, Jimmy! This is indeed a rite of passage as a plant hobbyist. I can’t believe that I just stumbled upon the sequence of moving the cutting from water, moss then soil like you described in your video. I am so blessed!

    Awesome video, man. By the way, when your monstera has such long aerial roots, you can easily layer them without any risk. Just put as much of the aerial root that you can into a pot next to the mother plant and fill it with sphagnum or soil (soil would be better, because the aerial roots will just directly put out soil roots this way). After a month or two, you can just cut off the plant from the node under where the root is, and pot it up! The mother plant will also put out new growth faster this way, and the layered plants will not lose the maturity and fenestrations in the newer leaves they produce. All and all, it's the best way to propagate them if the plant presents you with such massive aerial roots :)

    So glad I found you! Before I did thou, I bought a Albo that will be shipped barerooted. I’m sure it will come with instructions, but I could use some extra tips before I receive it because I’m realizing what I did and I’m scared I will kill it now.😭😭
    I feel like I did my research and this plant has been on my wish list for a while, but Now that’s I’ve taken the plunge, I’m getting nervous.😔

    I didn't think there would be a part 3 so happy you made it longer what a nice surprise! I would really like your next series to explore factors for slowing down the browning of the white albo leaves.. can you possible please experiment to see whether more humidity in the air or less humidity in the air slows down the browning? Great to watch your methods! Viewing you regularly from Jakarta x @pandoras__hope

    i forgot to finish. so i split a monsters into three diff plants . i put them direct in soil. it has that long stem ( chonk?) trunk? where i cut the stem - trunk it's growing new leaves but the long trunk is in the soil now. i had it out .... i'm confused why it won't grow more leaves and wonder if i should just cut up the trunk and start new guys ... it's been a couple of months ... i would like more leaves . seems the cutting the trunk makes it grow more leaves ....

    Thanks for the series- I bought a Monstera plant and every plant within the pot has been getting root rot. So... I wanted to know if I cut off all of the roots in order to get rid of the rot- should I put the cuttings directly in water or should I get them into a pot of moss? I know this might be a preference issue, but I was just wondering if the first step is to put it in water - then into the moss and then in soil?

  • @andrewriggs1988
    @andrewriggs1988 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I apologize if I missed it but how do you tell it's ready to go from moss to soil? I would have loved a video of that transition. You did show that one with TONS of roots but still in moss. Is that what you're waiting for before going to soil?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's really no right answer to this unfortunately. Depending on who you ask, the answer is different. Depends a lot on comfort level I believe. Some will root in water till there are tons of roots and go straight to soil. The moss transition isn't necessary though I think it provides more safety especially for people who are uncertain about their soil compositions.

    i am wondering.. i bought a monstera albo cutling and put it in water. After a few days i could see little white dots on the aerial. But then a bit of the aerial root end fell off and i knew it was rotting. I cut if off but i put it back in water right away so i guess that caused more rotting :( The whole aerial root rotted step by step and now i guess the cuttling is too damaged. I didn't see the rotting of the aerial because it is obviously dark brown :o( did this ever happen to you? Is it normal, that the aerial starts rotting too? i could'nt find information about cutting aerial roots back due to rotting in water

    I have been given a beautiful monstera varigata leaf and stem, is it possible that there might be some nodal material at the end of the stem? The stem is thicker at it’s end so I am keeping it in water and enjoying it’s beauty. What is your opinion please?

    Does it make sense to have the aerial roots in water for a while before making the cutting to give it a head start on the water root development?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do this or you can wrap the aerial roots in moss to promote roots that way. Lots of people do it before taking a cutting, or at least lots should haha

    So if you were to cut and propagate the one leaves off the stem what would you do with the huge Arial roots as you put it in water?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, aerial roots can go in water and will sprout new water roots. Aerial roots should NOT go into soil or you'll risk root rot, unless the soil is extremely well aerated.

    When water propagating, I'm assuming the aerial roots also go in the water no matter how long/big they are? Also, if the roots only developed on the upper nodes of the stem when water propagating, can the entire stem under that go into the soil or will it rot without roots coming out of those nodes?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the first question, yes. I think aerial roots really do well for water propagation regardless of their size. For the second question, aerials roots going directly into the soil have always done very poorly for me. For the aerials roots that didn’t go into water, I would just keep them out of the soil and let them stay aerial roots when you transition out of soil.

    • @elisabethnickles8697
      @elisabethnickles8697 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i read something that where the aerial roots come out can also be where a leaf comes out... confused . i love those crazy aerial roots but cut them off one guy and now regret it... i was hoping i would get some more leaves. have you found if you cut off the aerial roots you get more leaves?

  • @claylow5337

    There are many mix reviews on rooting monsteras in water. People do say they cause a higher chance of rot. Based on your experience, would u prefer rooting in water or sphagnum. I'm quite torn between the 2. I have 10 cuttings of my albo and I lay them on sphagnum. It's been a week. A few of them are turning yellow on ends and as well as the side lying on the moss. So I'm not sure if I should dunk them in water to rush them to push out roots. I'm quite lost tbh.
