I agree with you about how great the community is. I am so glad to be a part of the Kingdom Death community. I started my TH-cam channel because the let's play channel that I watched Kingdom Death on put their campaign on hiatus. This game has such a great fandom that surrounds it.

The range of emotions I feel while playing this game can not be overstated. Even after hundreds of hours it still hurts when you lose that prized piece of gear, or that survivor that accumulates lots of great stats dies. The deep valleys give way to even higher peaks though and thats why I love this game. I enjoy the story unraveling before me so much that now on my solo playthroughs each lantern year I journal the events and describe to my future self what exactly happened to each wayward survivor. Now I can read through previous campaigns to help remind me of how awesome the individual stories are.

There are some games that go into similar realms (Gloomhaven being the most famous), but nothing hits quite the same way at the end of the day. Although some of those other games are also extremely good, in their own right.

It has core things that makes for fun gaming mechanics
    1. Hunting/ dominating large bosses in contrast to fighting swarms of annoying mooks
    2. Settlement development in contrast to your gaming actions have no effect to the town you settle
    3. Crafting system and collection of sets in contrast that your character has preset equipment and skills.
    4. The hunters are not heroes, they become epic legends through their experience and grow strengths/ weaknesses based on your encounters giving character development to your settlers. Each character you make will tell a different story to you.
    5. Different player playthrough will shape a different thought process of the game given dynamics within the storytelling allowing unlimited replays.

I never thought it would go so far for me in the board game genre. It started January 2018 when i was introduced to Eldritch Horror. The first game i bought after that was Zombicide Season 1. Over time it went to advanced and expert games. Last year i bought Gloomhaven, however i already had a group with around 25 scenarios done. But I NEEDED this game for a 2 Player campaign and of course because of Corona. The fact that i jumped on kickstarters which are far beyond 100 € (AT:O, Bloodborne All-in and more) i never expected this would happen, when i started in Board Games. Actually i played KDM once 2 years ago and it was overwhelming, because of all the stuff and the rules. But no, this is too much and too expensive for one single game without expensions. Some weeks ago, the german Brettspielblog startet a Live Lets Play of the Lantern Campaign. 2 Days ago they just defeated the Watcher. Well, just after a few episodes i started reading and get more informations about KDM. And then? I pre-ordered the Reprint of 1.6... 3 Days ago, i joined a TTS Campaign and played around 10 hours, defeated the Lion, Gorm and Antelope. My thoughts after these sessions, how much money have i spent for this game? I don't know, can't wait, just want it!!

When I bought the game, my friends called me crazy for spending so much money on a board game. Then they got to experience it and their sentiment changed.
I tried playing KDM solo too, for me however, sharing the experience is a huge part of the game and makes it so much more entertaining. I wish it would be different, so I could finally manage to finish a campaign. Can’t wait for my next session.
I am curious to know, did you back Aeons Trespass: Odyssey? I‘d like to know your opinion on it.
By the way, I think your channel is truly amazing. The quality of your videos is out of this world. I enjoy the way you calmly yet passionately talk about and present the games - KDM in particular ;) And all of that with sanity and reason. I hope you can keep it up and I‘m looking forward to more videos.

You mention the hobby aspect and how you have memories tied to the painting of the minis, which is cool. I kinda looked up from my listening at that point in the video with a paintbrush in hand as I work on painting up some minis from another game that I own. And I can already tell personally that some of these early games that I paint will be much less likely to ever leave my collection because of that extra aspect I am adding to them personally.

My introduction to KDM... a friend had me over for it and we got to LY4 with minimal scars. Everything was going great, we had 14 survivors we were gearing up nicely. In a single LY, by the end of LY5 everyone but one of the survivors in the settlement were dead. Due to a couple nemesis encounters, a failed hunt, and... lots of bad intimacy roles trying to recover. The story from it... is what made me fall in love with the game. A lot of big campaign games have stories all planned out with nice branching paths and such. For KDM... the experience creates its own story and you never quite know what sort it will be till the end.
I would definitely patronize you for some good KDM content. Just don't stop with the Root games! (Also would love some Twilight Imperium 4e and Arkham Horror: The Card Game).

This game is great. I played it only 3 times at my friend's home (he had the game) and I falled in love with it. Every phase, every battle, every hunt gives me what I treasure the most - emotions. Pure emotions of joy, rage, laugh, depression. In our time when people are hiding their emotions behind masks, the pure emotions is what I seek. And this is what this game gives me. The chance to see all this emotions in people playing it... Or the people doing videos. Like you. So, thank you for this video. Hope, one day I will have my own copy of this game.

@@Quackalope the funny thing is, I played three times and each time I lost a character. And each next character died more horrible death than previous. The first one got severe head injure from White Lion. I rolled a 1 and his head exploded. The second one nearly gone mad and started killing people, but I rolled pretty high and he managed to calm down and skip the next hunt. Unfortunatly, when returning back, group lost in time and space and came to Year One settlement, so that guy was erased from time and space. The last one got nice encounter and had additional armor everywhere. But... On the Hunt Phase he fount stone throne which he wandet to touch so badly. Of course, after touching it, he switched places with the stone figure.

My guy, I love your passion for this game, and I just recently got the core set and recently got my hands on a gambler's chest, all before i have even dived into my first solo prologue. i just love the scope of this game, and I love how you described how this is an awesome game to solo. i work night shift, so it's hard to schedule game hang outs with friends, so I feel like this is going to really fill that void for me, plus I love the idea of the upkeep and bookkeeping of all elements as I solo play. It's gonna feel like I am building up and living in this world.
Also, I see that a lot of your minis are painting almost entirely of a bronze or gold color. I love the look of that, since I am not an expert painter by any means, but it makes it looks epic with that worn bronze look, and it almost matches so well with the showdown game board.

I love the theme and art of KDM. As a fan of Hellraiser, growing up with body count horror movies, and later torture horror, this is the type of game that would appeal to me.
I also love the bronze paint job. I'm going to have to do that for a game where it works thematically. I'm thinking something like Age of Atlantis, with the metal robot mythic creatures and the giant statue.

Thanks for the complete overview of Kingdom Death. I've been following it on and off for many years wondering if i should get it and really, this video only makes me more intrigued to get it and play it. The dark macable, the dark humor (punching the lion and pulling out his balls like in shut down and play's video), the village expansion, crafting, hunt, etc. All of thise make me want to get it. Only the time comimitement has been holding me back (2 very young children and all the rest of life...).... But the solo play especially in the current state of the world makes it very appealing... Also what better lesson in life, if you don't succeed, if you falldown, try again time and time again. You'll win some, you'll lose some, you'll learn and grow... I held myself from buying KDM for years because of the miniatures. It wasn't something I had no interest and no skills in.
I cracked up about a year and a half ago. I assembled literally all monsters within a week.To be fair, a year and a half later, I still have some survivors not assembled. I haven't painted any, and I don't plan on doing it.
But boy... this game. This masterpiece of a game. The first night I planned to play, some friends came home around 6-7PM. We played until 7AM. Went to bed, woke up around 2-3PM... and started all over again until late that night.
There is something like no others. And I love how you mention it; I feel like the answers missing is part of it. I think it's needed. Only your imagination can fill the gaps in the end, and I think it's perfect this way. Having an "end" and "answers" might have left it much less replayable and potentially lead to a loss of interest, of mystery.
The only thing I regret is, I introduced this game to so many people, that I struggle a whole lot to maintain a group. I had one going quite steady, but then the pandemic hit. I hope we'll go back to it again soon... because after all... I've started so many campaigns... and finished none of them. So yeah... may be you're not... but I am a bit tired of that white lion ;)
I sadly missed the last Black Friday sale and I'm currently waiting in the next to get some (or all?) expansions. I just hope they reprint some. Absolutely need that Gorm... and to be fair, at Black Friday's price... I'd take the Expansion of Death at this point.
Oathsworn is the game I'm looking to that might resemble it the most. But the "no perma death" in Oathsworn is almost a turn off. I'm a big fan of these tactical games like XCOM or Fire Emblem. And Kingdom Death also brought this to the table.

@@Quackalope I tried, but I have a decent solo collection, and KD:M isn't part of it for me. I tried, ran a few LY, but I don't get the same excitement solo. I much prefer playing it with friends. And I'm lucky enough to have a crazy amount of steady friends.
I tried both Scribe and Black Ledger back then, I don't know how much they evolved since, it's been about a year. I was a little disappointed how useless they were in the middle of the fight as "active sheet".

Aeon trespass, oathsworn, sankokushin, Primal: the awakening, even Middara... all seem to have been influenced by Kingdom Death. It looks like you could potentially enjoy wargames. If you enjoy the fantasy theme and building Miniatures, but you don't want to spend a lot of money on minis, then I suggest once again, Frostgrave, Rangers of Shadow deep and Ghost Archipelago. You can even play those games solo. The enemies have AI rules and your characters level up. There's also plenty of cinematic moments in those games.

    • @anthonynelson8397
      @anthonynelson8397 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

ATO certainly has made some aspects of the combat better in my opinion. Here are a couple of examples:
      1. You don't have to worry about hit locations, you have 3 gauges that you monitor instead of locations on the body. Also, taking damage isn't always a bad thing in ATO which is an interesting mental shift to make.
      2. The AI system is similar but since things escalate as you damage locations new tiers of the AI get introduced into the mix. The best way I can describe the escalation process would be comparing it to an MMO Raid boss fight that has multiple stages. The more of the next stage that gets introduced the more you have to figure out how to adjust.
      3. The Hard Co-Op mechanisms make it easier to more reliably hit locations. It also means that you really pay attention to your allies in combat because you set each other up for combos.
All of that being said, I personally like those 3 major adjustments they have made but I'm sure some people will still favor the gritty/random nature of the KDM fights contrasted with ATO.

I ended up quarterbacking us to a win and now only play that game solo. BUT I can't wait for Jagged Earth! If this game was simply paper sheets and cards costing like and you could buy it in it's entirety 100-200 dollars, I would buy it in a heartbeat. The darkness and tragedy of the theme of this game, along with uncovering the mystery of it's story, makes me look longingly in it's direction after rejecting it over and over. The Idea of pitting myself against the enormous and cruel puzzle that KDM has in store, makes my blood pump and my brain whir with mechanization in anticipation of pitting myself against an almost impossible foe. Being responsible for the life and death of my own ragged band of the last flicker of humanity, with darkness waiting to swallow them as fast as flipping off a light at midnight, makes me wonder if I could scrape together three months pay and just go for it. But.. this game requires a commitment that I simply cannot give.
This game will devour your time, money, and and hell space faster than the white lion will eat an unprepared and inexperienced hunter during your first play through. If I want the same kind of stakes or story, I'm just gonna throw down a hundred bucks for an role playing game and play forever in whatever world I want to, and I'd never have to spend another cent. I love miniatures, but have never really wanted to spend the time to build them, frequently just pumping them out as fast as I could, just so I could get them to the table, and consequentially has led to 1/3 of a closet filled with boxes of un-assembled minis. The complexity of adding up 3 modifiers for every roll, just makes me feel like it would take away from the elements of the game that I truly enjoy.
So, I understand Why you like it, and I'm even a bit jealous that you have the ability say yes to this horrifically beautiful monstrosity. But I've been down this road before, and have learned some hard lessons about practicality and value, and so I'll say no again.
p.s. I really like the concept for these videos. Kind of wish there was something like it for just about every topic.

I like your enthusiasm for the game. It is your most favorite game, but you even did not finish a single campaign?! So I strongly recommend to include the Manhunter. Such a cool fight and so many possible great rewards. One is a FA called the Transcended Masochist...
Generally said, I can agree to most of your points. Fortunately I have a good soul close nearby that builds the minis for me. So I can dive deep in the content with all expansions. It is my favorite game as well and it is the only game I play solo. Best is with 2 or 3 players of course but finding enough times to play with more players is troublesome.
I always want to play it too. Even after 13 won campaigns with nearly all received achievements except the Green Armor. I did not try it so far. Funny that so many people compare it with D&D. But I think it is not. It misses the real roleplay elements. For me it is more a very very dark Civilization (it helps if you played Call of Cthulhu before) thing and I like it so much trying to avoid all the possible catastrophies and getting my tribe out of harms way. Its a constant challenge and you cannot save all. But give it a try!
