When Did Jacob Become Israel?

  • The patriarch Jacob is the father of Israel, but when did he become Israel? Did this happen when he wrestled with God or at a laster point? Do we have contradictory accounts in the Pentateuch?

One of my gripes with the documentary hypothesis is that it assumes the authors of the Pentateuch were idiots who were unable to actually mix two narratives together into a single one and instead put two different versions of each story without noticing any apparent "contradiction"

Hey IP! I love the work you do to get us informed on theology!
I’m a Christian myself and recently I’ve been troubled in spirit because my friend who is also Christian thinks that the God of the Old Testament is mean and cruel while the God of the NT is friendlier so he started to throw around the theory that Gnosticism was what the early apostles believed in and that The Father isn’t the God of the OT.
I’ve been trying to conduct my own research and I genuinely wanted to know from your view point of what impact gnostics had, if any, toward early Christianity.

my first problem with the DOCUMENTARY Hypothesis is that it is about documents - physical documents - it cannot be refuted or proven because the originals are long gone. Secondly, it is all supposition and a series of multiple linked hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 may have an arguable probability of 0.9, and so might H2. But the MULTIPLE linked hypothesis is now of probability 0.81 (0.9 x 0.9 = 0.81). The whole thing turns to speculative dust in very short order.

Beautiful video, as usual. Jacob’s (new, given) name being symbolic of Israel, of the land of Israel, of the people of Israel, and of the relationship of all these with G-d. Jacob wrestled with the Angel and still had the humility to ask for a blessing, since he knew that the Angel was more powerful than him. He was given the name Israel, meaning that he, as a person, was honored with this name, and, at once, it is given to the Land and the people of Israel, and the relationship of those with G-d. Thank you very much. Very clear and complex video, as usual.

Excellent work as usual, IP. The more I learn about the topic, the more I've come to realize that the JEDP hypothesis (and its even more exotic offshoots) is not merely unproven, but simply untenable. The tight chiasmic patterns in each Genesis cycle, combined with the strong parallels between cycles that you point out there, the archaic language, the 2nd millennium Egyptian loanwords and symbology, the near identical text between the Samaritan and Judean Pentateuchs and lack of Zion theology, and much more - you simply cannot realistically get these things from different traditions haphazardly stitched together by people with widely different agendas centuries after the events described, and it's simply not rational to hold that that's what happened once you've got enough information.
And the continued prominence of that view in spite of it all is a testament to just how profound an effect political, philosophical, and religious (or anti-religious) prejudices have within the sciences (even the relatively "hard" sciences), and the intense groupthink and gatekeeping it results in against what is dismissed as not "respectable" enough to even be considered regardless of evidence and reason.
I was already aware of this dynamic from my own observation, and from guys like Kuhn and Feyerabend, but it has really hit home in recent years just how strong and systemic the effect is.

Myths and legends that arose during the reign of Ptolemy and were eliminated by archaeology. You must know that Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem are pagan Canaanite cities and have nothing to do with the Israelis. At the time when the Torah claimed the existence of the Kingdom of Israel, Canaan was an Egyptian province. Therefore, Israel did not exist until after that, that is, it existed at a late time and was merely a tribal leadership over a small area, and there is no mention of these biblical exaggerations in the Assyrian, Egyptian, Palestinian and other inscriptions.

Jacob wrestled with the heel (phallus) of Esau, while they were in the womb.
El, in the bible, is actually Jupiter/IU Piter.
The tale of Jacob pouring oil (semen) and wine (passion) on the upright stone (phallus) would have been performed by a female desiring to become impregnated.

Can anyone point me to anything in the scriptures that prove Yaqob aka Yisrael(Yashar'al) settled in what is today referred to as Israel(in north east Africa)?
Yaqob was a shemite and the land allotment of these people wasn't in Africa(kham's land allotment),so how is true Israel where we've been told it is?

Israel, in the bible, has no relation to a historical nation or country. Israel is two words of Isra/Ysra (phallus) + El (god). It is nothing more than god is the phallus.
The rock that Jacob slept on is the phallus (Hermes stone). He stood it upright and poured oil (semen) and wine (passion) on it.
The wrestling with god is simply the "wrestling with the phallus." The El in this myth is also the Latin Jupiter (IU Piter).
The Hermes stone (phallus) is also found in Deuteronomy 32.18 and is called "the rock that begat thee."
Also see Isaiah 9.14-15, where Israel (as summer) is described as having the head of the noble/royal lion (Leo) and lying tail (Scorpio). The palm branch/frond is the sign Virgo. See Virgo depicted holding the palm frond in her right hand (summer) and bundle of barely in her left hand (winter). The bundle represents the harvested crops which are to be shared (hospitality) during the winter season. The reed, a water plant, symbols the sign Libra which is the first of winter months (called bitter sea). This is an example of th year divided into the three seasons of winter, spring, and summer. Israel, in this case, equates to July thru October. The 12 tribes are the twelve solar months in one year. Reuben, the firstborn, is Aquarius (January).
The writers often blended their astronomical charts.

Myths and legends that arose during the reign of Ptolemy and were eliminated by archaeology. You must know that Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem are pagan Canaanite cities have nothing to do with the Israelis.

Certainly not in Genesis 10, 11 or 12.

Adam wasn't a man Adam is the represented figure of Mankind. The Garden represents the Natural Nature. Moses led the people out of Egypt, the CITY into the desert which is Nature.
