His did not have the ground proximity warning system. That is why it crashed. The NTSB recommended the system be installed a year prior to the crash but the FAA didn't enforce it. I flew (as a passenger) in the military all the time in the 80s. My CO was a blackhawk and Huey pilot. I loved it!! I was a lot younger and a lot more fearless at the time. So there's that....

I remember before, they will use chartered jets instead of helicopters even for short flights if weather conditions are bad. Maybe a bit more expensive but has more power and easier to control than a helicopter for that kind of weather.

Being a person who works construction and sees the damage "weather" causes on different metals and materials its surprising he was flying in such an old aircraft. Alll it takes is one thing to fail on these systems and there is no coming back Imo.

This variant already has newer and more complex system, that including the terrain awareness system. All glass instrument, the old analog gauge already eliminated on this variant, unlike the one that Kobe was on.

Quite honestly this helicopter design is extremely dated. Yes the cockpit has been upgraded somewhat but overall the design is quite old. If you have the money I would opt for the Bell 525 over this model.

Do you think that would have helped? You have to respond to warning by turning away from that ground in your proximity. To do that you have see where you are going. Google : Bride crashes in fog in Brazil. (see what flying in fog does and experience what the nine went thru)

Aircraft such as the Bell 222, 230, 430, and 212, 412, have the throttles on the cyclic and the pilot in command does not have to remove their hands from the flight controls to manipulate them in an emergency.

Today, making morning coffee, after hearing that sputtering had been heard by folks on the ground before the crash, I thought: Wow. it is quite chancy to use a helicopter as a regular mode of transportation: if your car breaks down one is just stuck on the side of the road awaiting a tow-truck; but if a helicopter fails one is high up in the air at the mercy of the forces of gravity. Not a place one wants to be. Very sad. Reminds one of how quickly it all can be taken away. How fragile is life, how useless wealth and fame when the angel of Death closes in. I realized today that it was this general fact that was making me sad -- the demonstration of the frailty of everything we glamorize as a society. I'm sure Mr. Bryant would have traded all his rings and wealth for a full-lived life for his dear daughter. Very sad, certainly, to be reminded of this greater truth.
