  • There's a lot of talk and some misinformation online about exertional compartment pressure testing. Big needles look scary, so we understand that. However this video should clear up any concerns and demonstrate how simple and non-invasive the procedure actually is. All patients walk out under their own power and can return to exercising the following day.

Oh dear god no, no, no, no NOOOOOO way ... looks absolutely awful... maybe I should not have watched that. I'm in pain just looking thinking about what I just watched. Think I'll just keep icing my leg down after my workouts thank you.

Nylon06 I actually just had this test today at this same place by this same guy and it was a breeze. Really no pain at all. It felt weird when they anesthetized my legs but that wasn’t painful. Needles and blood don’t bother me at all so I watched everything they did bc I just find it super interesting but if you didn’t watch, you’d be able to just sit there relatively comfortably. My leg issues were such that I could no longer do my sport that I love simply bc my legs were literally not functioning so I figured this is a small price to pay to find out if it is in fact compartment Syndrome (and it is). Following up with the orthopedic doctor who referred me to St. Vincent’s to discuss what the next steps are soon. But if you need to have this done, just remember, it looks MUCH worse than what it actually is!

I had this done yesterday. I am terrified of needles (I'm not kidding, I recently fainted when I got a blood test), but I made it through just fine. I made sure not to look at the needles! Honestly the worst part was the weird sensation of pressure when the needle was injected and the weird... almost, "tugging" when it was removed, which you can kind of see here in this video.

@@foxmulder1363 i did have compartment syndrome in both legs, i have surgery to release 2 compartments tomorrow. And no, the actual test still hurt, just didn't hurt too much more than a flu shot. I would say it felt more weird, rather than it hurt a lot

@@Tupples Wow i hope you are fully recovered now dude.
Yeah the thick ass needle looks pretty terrifying but i have tried getting myself used to injections by having accupuncture in the legs.
Also when i trigger my compartment syndrome its that uncomfortable that i would welcome someone stabbing my leg.

After having this procedure done, diagnosis positive for chronic compartment syndrome bilateral. This lead me to seeing the vascular clinic who conducted an lower extremity arteriogram with provocative maneuvers. Now I am positive for popliteal artery entrapment.

I saw this video prior to getting the test done, and was worried because of how bad it looked. Honestly it does not hurt and feels uncomfortable at best; they usually numb the area that is being stabbed. There is no pain as the needles gets deep in there; it's after the exam that sucks because it will be sore for the next day or 2.

@@Christian.Schoeman Do not! it's really not bad as it looks like, I think the toughest part of the test is the anesthetic injection, which will probably make you feel a little bit uncomfortable, not painful though.

I just did this test yesterday, for exertional compartment syndrome. No anesthesia because it can apparently mess with the pressures. It wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. I got sticked two times per leg, twice. It does hurt a bit but honestly, walking the next day or two is worse in my opinion.

If these re pressure reading and you have forced an injection probe into the compartment to get an initial reading then re-inert the probe how can you get a seal for an accurate pressure reading ?

A surgeon will refer once he think it's required. To get to a surgeon, speak with your local doctor.
