I was happy that night when the Spurs picked Tim Duncan. David Robinson carried the team's winning flag for years. But with Duncan joining the team, the Spurs became the best to beat, if you can in the whole league, and won 5 championships with him as Spurs player.
Crazy to look back at 16/17 Sixers had the 1st pick (17 Traded from Boston) and the Celtics still got the best player in both drafts. Ainge is a genius.
76ers just picked bad. Embiid is their best pick at any draft position since Iverson. Celtics could tell who was going to be picked when trading down. If anything they traded down to pay less, as they knew who they wanted would still be on the board. Good draft for them.
Technically, if we're going by rookie season performance, then it's this guy @1:02. The best number 1 draft rookie player ever and he was great from the beginning
Stunted/Injury Riddled Players and Draft Busts since 1980: Ralph Sampson (1983): he and Olajuwon were the original twin towers, but injuries really hampered him. He played like 70 games in his last 3 seasons combined iirc because of the injuries. Pervis Ellison (1989): could never stay on the floor at all. Had his best season in his third year tho where he averaged 20 points and 11 boards, winning Most Improved Player. Joe Smith (1995): the dude drafted before KG. Singlehandedly bankrupt himself by flushing 61 million down the drain. Was actually very good in his first few years but eventually just transformed into a roleplayer. Also had that controversy with Minnesota. Michael Olowokandi (1999): was very talented but untouchable, as Kareem puts it. An unwillingness to accept criticism, a detrimental attitude and a billion knee surgeries eventually ended him. Kwame Brown (2001): I still applaud him for having an otherwise solid career, but the pick was still horrendous, especially since it's Michael Jordan as the GM. Everyone knows what happened so I won't explain it. Andrew Bogut (2005): dude was an insane defender, singlehandedly making the Bucks a top 10 defense iirc in his prime, but that horrific injury robbed him of his stardom. Still managed to win rings tho with GS. Andrea Bargnani (2006): I honestly don't think he's that gargantuan bust as everyone puts it, but the numbers he put up still doesn't justify his draft position. He was a black hole on defense and his shooting didn't really carry over from Europe. Greg Oden (2007): Still think he would have been very good had not for his injuries. Doesn't really help that KD was drafted after him tho. Derrick Rose (2008): No, Rose is not a bust. That's just heretical stuff to say. But the ACL injury robbed him of so much at such a young age. He definitely would have done a lot more down the line, like more all star appearances and a huge chance to be first ballot HoFer. I'm very proud of him for picking himself back up however and rediscovering himself as a professional basketball player. Anthony Bennett (2013): I know the draft class as a whole was very weak with Giannis and Gobert being projects, McCollum being not that highly touted and Victor having to go to 3 teams to be an all star, but what the fuck was Cleveland thinking? Markelle Fultz (2017): he has the talent, and I still think he still has a lot of time to at least create a respectable career, but that number one pick potential is long gone.
@@praveenfernandes734 No, because Ben Simmons isn't a bust. He doesn't play like a #1 pick, but that's not the same as being a bust.

Love how it starts with Joe Barry Carroll. Warriors got that no.1 pick from Boston by trading Robert Parrish and another draft pick (Kevin McHale) haha what a trade.
Probably would take Kyrie over Rose just because he’s a better shooter. Otherwise, I think everyone else is the correct call. Hakeem would easily be the debatable one for bigs but TD and Shaq are too good to leave off the starting line up.

AI seems like a good #1 pick, especially compared to the others we see here, but that 96 draft class was so deep. Hall of farmers left & right in that draft: Kobe, Nash, Ray Allen...
Yes. I think it’s because most picks back in the day were drafted upon completing college. Now players are getting drafted with only 1-2 years of college or straight out of high school. That can be a about 4 year difference in age.
@@jaybdub77 yeah but the likes of Bron and Kobe were coming straight out of high school into the draft and look older than most guys now. Kids these days just look younger than previous generations at their age.
No, it just means that that one player alone wasn't enough to change the fortunes of the franchise. Larry Johnson was ROY in 1992, and teamed with #2 pick Alonzo Mourning the very next year, to lead the Charlotte Hornets a first round victory in the playoffs that same year. Mourning hit a buzzer-beating, midrange jumper in game 4 to win the series.
@johnanderson9765 David Robinson @1:02 proved you wrong because he instantly took a very bad 20-62 Spurs team and turned into playoff contender, 3rd best of the WC as rookie, and became all-star already being 3rd best in his position as well as one of the best players in the league. Probably the best rookie ever with high performance stats

some takeaways from this video: cavs had the most #1 picks with 6. they also had quite possibly the greatest #1 pick of all-time in lebron james, while also quite possibly the worst #1 pick off all-time in anthony bennett. the lakers #1 pick james worthy in the 1982 draft, was originally from the cavs (funnily enough) from the infamous stepien era. this is also the first and only time a reigning NBA champion picked first overall. 9 teams have never won the 1st overall pick so far

Nobody talks about Mark Aguirre nowadays, but he was a 3-time all-star and averaged 20+ points every season for miserable Mavericks teams plus he averaged 30 on 52.4% shooting in the 83-84 season and didn't even make the All-NBA team. I don't think he really fits in either category, not a all-time legend or a bust.

Probably would take Kyrie over Rose just because he’s a better shooter. Otherwise, I think everyone else is the correct call. Hakeem would easily be the debatable one for bigs but TD and Shaq are too good to leave off the starting line up.
Yeah, that's pretty legit.

Phew goodNESS the 90s picks... no doubt about almost every one of those ballers.
AI seems like a good #1 pick, especially compared to the others we see here, but that 96 draft class was so deep. Hall of farmers left & right in that draft: Kobe, Nash, Ray Allen...
@@zacka6226 yep, definitely one of the deepest draft classes, speaks to how good AI was that even now you can somewhat defend him as the first pick.
Hakeem is my mines 🤍. What a talent. Second I like is Kyrie.

You fine ngl, you got ig?
Anthony Edwards man I missed that year. Covid sucked
3:50 KING JAMES!!!!🔥🔥👑👑
Does anyone else notice how the faces get younger as time goes by?
th-cam.com/video/-q96svo5YsM/w-d-xo.html
Kids these days just look younger than previous generations at their age.
love watching this every year
this is our yearly reminder tyat anthony bennett exists
it's amazing how many of those #1 picks were actually bombs...!!!
I was the number 1 pick took the pistons to the finals and won 7 rings but I didn’t have the cameras on
Flight, is that you??
😒.........shhhhh 2k
Sometimes I forget Shaq was even in the nba, let alone the 1st pick. I just knew him as that big guy that’s in every commercial 😂😂
You know which top pick flopped when the the same team has the first pick the following year 😂
Shaq and Webber back to back NY the Magic. You saying Shaq sucked as a rookie? If not, then specify, especially considering the shakeout after trades.
Best 5 picks from 1980-Present
1.MJ - 1984 Chicago Bulls
2.Steph Curry - 2009 Golden State Warriors
3.Kobe Bryant - 1996 Charlotte Hornets
4.Shaq - 1992 Orlando Majic
5.Lebron James - 2003 Cleveland Cavaliers

When Lebron went back to Cavaliers in 2014, Cavs have 4 #1 pick players.
1996, 2009, 2010 and 2011 🔥🔥🔥
David Robinso + Tim duncan = ☠️
Sam Bowie will be always known to most people as the bust that was drafted right in-between two Hall of Famers (Hakeem & MJ).
Come back to this video when Paolo gets Rookie of the Year Let’s 👏Go 👏Duke✊
LEBRON JAMES is the best No.1 pick in the nba 🐐🔥
some takeaways from this video:
cavs had the most #1 picks with 6. they also had quite possibly the greatest #1 pick of all-time in lebron james, while also quite possibly the worst #1 pick off all-time in anthony bennett.
the lakers #1 pick james worthy in the 1982 draft, was originally from the cavs (funnily enough) from the infamous stepien era. this is also the first and only time a reigning NBA champion picked first overall.
9 teams have never won the 1st overall pick so far
So sad David sterns last no 1 pick had to be Anthony bennit
this is a good way to see how much cameras have evolved since 1980

As I was watching this, I was feeling like I saw more and more busts the closer we got to the present. Even if a player isn't an immediate bust, it's hard to live up to the hype of being a #1 pick your whole career. You can start off ok, get injured, and just kind of fall off.

1979 1st pick was magic😂😂😂
Only a handful of 1st round picks were really worth it.
Jalen’s might be more ‘popular’ (Kenny Powers voice), but Anthony’s go 1st Overall.
No cap
So no one’s going to talk about the Ming family having an awkward moment on live tv? Lol
Low key it was wholesome though lol
Why are number 1 picks always complete legends or complete busts, why they never mid level players at least lol
Because the expectation are really high,so if thy fulfill it they are stars and if not they are busts
Wiggins?
Nobody talks about Mark Aguirre nowadays, but he was a 3-time all-star and averaged 20+ points every season for miserable Mavericks teams plus he averaged 30 on 52.4% shooting in the 83-84 season and didn't even make the All-NBA team. I don't think he really fits in either category, not a all-time legend or a bust.
