    00:00 Introduction
So is it appropriate for the occasion is often stipulated by the level of formality of the event. For example, you wear something different when you just go grocery shopping or to the gym then if you go to a garden party to your office or a gala event. It's a big question becomes, how do you know if a garment is casual, formal, or somewhere in between? In this video, we covered the general principle of nearly every garment in classic menswear and we give you general clues, so you can get an idea if something is more in a casual end or in a formal end or simply in the golden middle.
01:05 Casual Vs. Formal Color Schemes
    02:12 Texture
    03:33 Patterns
    04:44 Structure
    06:35 Jackets
    12:22 Pants
    13:47 Shirts
    17:01 Ties and Neckwear
    18:42 Shoes
21:06 How do you put it all together?
    23:18 Outfit Rundown
Virtually speaking, the best outfits were those that combined the same level of formality throughout their outfit. That means they would wear a broadcloth shirt with maybe a sport coat and a pair of Derby shoes because it shows the middle level of formality for everything. In this day and age, things have changed a little bit and people have started combining different levels of formality throughout their outfit.

I often wear boots, even when sneakers are allowed. There shouldn’t be a problem wearing it where sneakers are allowed, so long as the outfit matches. I would probably pair them with a pair of chinos rather than jeans, and maybe a Henley/t-shirt/polo underneath a fabric bomber jacket. Since sneakers usually mean casual, though, you could probably get away with anything that looks good.

Ralph Lauren's dinner jacket, jeans, and cowboy boots combo is officially known as a "Texas Tuxedo" or "Texas Formal" and is considered formal dress in Texas when the invitation calls for it. I have worn it quite a few times. Very common at charity balls and weddings.
It is thought of as a slight step below black tie. Wearing darker jeans and darker boots can increase the formality, as can prominent creases in the jeans. Lighter boots and lighter jeans, wear on the jeans, and swapping the bow tie for a bolo tie can tone the formality down.
However, Garth Brooks taught us in "Friends in Low Places" to never "show up in boots... and ruin a black tie affair," when the invitation does not explicitly state to do so.

I have a beautiful lady's tux jacket with cream shawl lapels and a peplum. It had loose black tuxedo trousers with a black silk stripe down the outside of each leg. I love that jacket and wore it to fancy work events when I preferred to wear trousers or a black skirt instead of a gown. I could wear it with heels or flats. I could put a cream, white or black shell underneath it and I was warm enough without getting too warm. I could accessorize it with pearls or a pendant necklace. I don't fit into that outfit anymore but I can't bring myself to get rid of it. I don't have any daughters and my nieces are either too short and slender or too heavy. I'll pass it on to the right person at the right time. Maybe my sister?

Does anyone know where to purchase a white tie ensemble?

  • @hannamakela6989
    @hannamakela6989 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Why is black tie with a shiny satin bowtie less formal than white tie which has a matte cotton bowtie? Apart from the texture, also the material seems to be less "festive" in white tie than it is with black. There must be some historical reason, but I am interested to know whether it is an exception to the formality rule or whether I am assuming a false logic here. ;)

Could you please do a more detailed breakdown within the suits-to-business casual area that I think we're mostly interested in? I'm specifically concerned about "matching" shoe formality with that clothing. Is it acceptable to wear monkstraps or loafers with a double-breasted or a three-piece suit? Would these shoes be appropriate courtroom attire? Are Oxfords TOO formal for certain suits, like flannel or linen or seersucker or even sharkskin? How much do brogues step it down? Derbies? etc.

Here I am, a 20 something with exactly one suit only worn for funerals and weddings, who will probably not attend many formal events, and the most formal thing I do on a regular basis is go to church. Sitting here think about how I can apply this to my three shirts and four pants I mix and match to go to church in
