For those in the United States wondering if there are still any white tie functions, the Al Smith charity dinner in New York is still full dress formal.
In DC as well, there is the Thanksgiving Cotillion and the Russian Ball where their dress code is full dress formal. The Russian Ball, however, kinda plays around with formal attire in general, which means anyone there could show up in black tie, white tie, or semi-formal, but not business attire.
In Finland, where my girlfriend is from, the college students (not University) wear full fig to their graduation balls. Considering the fact I am from England, where this dress code originated, I'm saddened that the tradition has not been adopted here in England.

I do wear my "Frack", as we call it in Vienna, about five times a year, sometimes more. Here in Vienna there is a great variety of evening events, for example socalled Balls, where you either have to, or are at least welcomed wearing a white tie attire. I'm really happy about that!
An important detail that newcomers to this dress code often overlook is the fitting of the white tie itself. In a properly constructed shirt for wearing with a wing collar there is a loop of fabric below the back collar stud. The tie should be threaded through this loop to prevent the tie riding up the back of the collar.
One should also wear a fitted self-tie bow tie to eliminate the adjuster since the whole tie will be visible at times. And the collar should be above the tie, not behind it, though it's difficult to find collars that fit properly these days.

And people often do it properly (though the fit isn't always the best). It has been like that the past 100 years! :)
Yes, still plenty of formal and semi-formal events at Swedish universities. See people in suits and tail coats walking around Lund all the time, especially on the weekends. Pretty cool considering any sort of formal or nice attire is practically non-existent in US universities.
Well, I can't say for ALL of Europe, but I can say that from my experience in Sweden, it's common. At least at university anyway. Though it's also important to keep in mind that not everyone acts very formal at these events. There is usually a lot of drinking. :)

Daniel Bergonzi Donnie’s ties are far too long, with tape keeping them together at the back. He must buy the “extra long” ties to get around his goiter neck and traverse his hanging stomach and still hang below his belt. He’s never clean or crisp looking, with rumpled, ill fitting suits or sloppy sportswear. Apparently if one believes themselves to be perfect and omnipotent, concern for clothing disappears. However, his narcissism keeps him sculpting and dyeing that hair horror and spraying his face with orange foundation.
I got here because I watched a tutorial to make a tailcoat...which i planned to use for a Phantom of the Opera costume... I'm also a 17 year old girl. but I appreciate the class of the top hat. nice video.
The etiquette commanded that 1) With evening wear, you always have to wear an overcoat, because it's too extravagant to wear on the street, and also to protect it from dust and dirt 2) You wear the white scarf to protect you shirt front and bow tie from dust and dirt 3) You don't wear white gloves on the street. You only wear these when dancing with a woman wearing gloves or at special gala evenings. On the street, you wear other colour gloves. But please, not black, those are for funerals, and for servants. ;) I am not sure, but I think I read it in the Gesellschaflicher Wegweiser für alle Lebenslagen from 1927, do you know that book? :)
Black vest is mandatory during formal academic events in Uppsala and Lund the two oldest universities in Sweden. The men then change to a white vest for the dinner in the evening. A black vest is also mandatory during dinners with fraternal orders where white tie is required and as such I get to wear white tie with a black vest at least a dozen times a year.
It's so disappointing that the white tie dress code is almost non existent in Australia. Actually thinking of making my 25th (still over a year away) a white tie affair because I really want to go all out in dressing up at least once in life, preferably sooner rather than later.

It's direct, unambiguous and perfect. Also, it could of course be my imagination, but it seems to me that people in white tie are also quite a bit politer than they would be in casual. It is almost as if they don't want to embarrass the formal dress they wear.
I never bought the cloak (cape) to go with my mess uniform. I would have been midnight blue with a lighter blue lining. Two large silver buttons from my regiment and a piece of silver chain to hold it in place. I got my mess uniform for my wedding. And it was in the summer.
My husband wore a morning suit and top hat for our wedding. As he wears a nice suit every day for work I wanted him to feel special and as dressed up as I was. I think my husband would look good in white tie too, such a shame it’s not worn to the ballet or the opera so much now.
I was horrified at the white tie ensemble worn by Trump at the state dinner with the Queen. It was so poorly fitted that it was comical. I'm springing for a custom tailored model if I'm ever invited to the palace to dine with the Queen.
I've noticed that about him. For a guy that has his own clothing line, his suits were always the most poor fitting off the rack looking thing they could find. He might as well just put on a zoot suit. After doing some digging, I think what it is, Trump just lies about his size. He states he is 6'3" but, if you look at photos of him next Jeb Bush who is also 6'3" Trump is much shorter. Even Justin Trudeau has a few inches on him and he's 6'2".

In my high school orchestra ensemble, the boys were required to purchase and wear a white tie tuxedo when performing, but a few years ago the requirement was changed to black tie, so we would have some people wearing white tie while other people were wearing black tie.

Very interesting video. Where I am from even business suits are quite rarely worn outside of offices of foreign businesses and weddings, and it's mostly for the bridal party. The equivalent of black tie here doesn't even include a suit, jacket, or tie of any kind. Which is understandable because in many places even the coldest nights are over 27°C (80°F) with over 90% humidity. Unfortunately, that also means you can't really look too dapper at all.
According to a Norwegian 1960 book on proper manners and dress, white tie ensembles would use a black waistcoat in a similar fashion to the white, IF the evening was mens only. Since mens only evening affairs usually happened at lounges, the black waistcoat is called a "lounge-vest" (losjevest)
“Most formal in the Western Hemisphere” This is a painful fact I learned when I dared to show up to a “white-tie” event in the proper attire just 20km east of Greenwich in London. Did NOT go down well.
White Tie is the most formal dress code that a gentleman can wear in the Western hemisphere, and it comes with its own sets of rules and regulations. For footwear, patent leather opera pumps are the only acceptable option, and your hosiery must be made of a sheer black silk. The only appropriate headwear for a White Tie ensemble is a black silk top hat, which can be paired with an evening overcoat (with lapels faced in silk and silk-covered buttons), a white silk scarf and white kid gloves in the winter. The bow tie (made out of a white Marcella cotton) that goes with the White Tie ensemble must never be pre-tied, always one that you can tie yourself and sized to fit your neck perfectly. As for the White Tie dress shirt, it must have a Marcella bib front with a high-standing, detachable wing collar (fastened with [mother-of-pearl] collar studs). The shirt has single cuffs that are fastened with cufflinks and the bib accommodates 1-3 studs (depending on the wearer's height). Normally the cufflinks, shirt studs, [collar studs], and waistcoat buttons come as a set and are made out of mother-of-pearl. The pants have a double galon (braided or silk) down the sides and are high-waisted so as to be worn with suspenders (which are usually made of a white silk). The tailcoat is black, must be tailored to fit the body perfectly, has 6 decorative silk-covered buttons on the placket (three on each side), peaked lapels that are faced in silk, does not button in the front and is paired with a low-cut white Marcella waistcoat, fastened with exchangeable mother-of-pearl waistcoat buttons. It is common practise to wear a boutonniere (normally a white carnation) and white (silk or linen) pocket square with a White Tie ensemble. For a finishing flourish, you can carry an ebony cane with a silver handle (knob). In conclusion, I think that White Tie is an underrated dress code that deserves more recognition in this day and age, so I thank the Gentleman's Gazette for coming out with this brilliant video and hope to see more like it in the future.

I like this outfit. It reminds me of the Indian navy's mess uniform It is very similar to this, a white morning coat but the tail is shorter, a white stiff front shirt underneath and a black bowtie. Other than that was another mess uniform this was the same thing but with black
When was the galon stripe on the trousers introduced and when did it become the standard for the white tie ensemble? When I look at a lot of images of white tie during the Victorian era, most of the time, the trousers are missing the galon.
I have a White Tie ball in June - very exciting! I am struggling to find the trousers with two stripes though (and I am not spending £200 to get them from one of the two shops that seem to sell them). How okay is it to stick with a regular black tie pair of trousers?
I don’t know how rigorous your event is, but I had the exact same problem, I eventually compromised on buying normal, one stripe tuxedo pants and nobody noticed
I think really specific details like slippers vs opera pumps could leave someone feeling like they could never pull this look off for fear that of being judged simply because the vamp of the shoe isn't deep enough.
Agreed, the guide online says no slippers… and I know what is presented here is supposed to be the basic definition of white tie. However, some things need to be modernized, like the opera pumps (which are slippers). Black patent slippers with a higher vamp offer a more modern and masculine look, so that’s what I wear for white tie

Morning formal. White or black tie is not normally worn before 6:00 pm, though it may be appropriate for a late afternoon wedding that will continue into the evening, so as to avoid everyone having to change.

Wish you mentioned a cloak as a suitable replacement for the topcoat here, as its really the only chance a man has to wear a cloak these days.

Which is understandable because in many places even the coldest nights are over 27°C (80°F) with over 90% humidity. Unfortunately, that also means you can't really look too dapper at all.

According to a Norwegian 1960 book on proper manners and dress, white tie ensembles would use a black waistcoat in a similar fashion to the white, IF the evening was mens only. Since mens only evening affairs usually happened at lounges, the black waistcoat is called a "lounge-vest" (losjevest)

This is a painful fact I learned when I dared to show up to a “white-tie” event in the proper attire just 20km east of Greenwich in London. Did NOT go down well.

White Tie is the most formal dress code that a gentleman can wear in the Western hemisphere, and it comes with its own sets of rules and regulations. For footwear, patent leather opera pumps are the only acceptable option, and your hosiery must be made of a sheer black silk. The only appropriate headwear for a White Tie ensemble is a black silk top hat, which can be paired with an evening overcoat (with lapels faced in silk and silk-covered buttons), a white silk scarf and white kid gloves in the winter. The bow tie (made out of a white Marcella cotton) that goes with the White Tie ensemble must never be pre-tied, always one that you can tie yourself and sized to fit your neck perfectly. As for the White Tie dress shirt, it must have a Marcella bib front with a high-standing, detachable wing collar (fastened with [mother-of-pearl] collar studs). The shirt has single cuffs that are fastened with cufflinks and the bib accommodates 1-3 studs (depending on the wearer's height). Normally the cufflinks, shirt studs, [collar studs], and waistcoat buttons come as a set and are made out of mother-of-pearl. The pants have a double galon (braided or silk) down the sides and are high-waisted so as to be worn with suspenders (which are usually made of a white silk). The tailcoat is black, must be tailored to fit the body perfectly, has 6 decorative silk-covered buttons on the placket (three on each side), peaked lapels that are faced in silk, does not button in the front and is paired with a low-cut white Marcella waistcoat, fastened with exchangeable mother-of-pearl waistcoat buttons. It is common practise to wear a boutonniere (normally a white carnation) and white (silk or linen) pocket square with a White Tie ensemble. For a finishing flourish, you can carry an ebony cane with a silver handle (knob). In conclusion, I think that White Tie is an underrated dress code that deserves more recognition in this day and age, so I thank the Gentleman's Gazette for coming out with this brilliant video and hope to see more like it in the future.

I don’t know how rigorous your event is, but I had the exact same problem, I eventually compromised on buying normal, one stripe tuxedo pants and nobody noticed
I think really specific details like slippers vs opera pumps could leave someone feeling like they could never pull this look off for fear that of being judged simply because the vamp of the shoe isn't deep enough.
Agreed, the guide online says no slippers… and I know what is presented here is supposed to be the basic definition of white tie. However, some things need to be modernized, like the opera pumps (which are slippers). Black patent slippers with a higher vamp offer a more modern and masculine look, so that’s what I wear for white tie

Morning formal. White or black tie is not normally worn before 6:00 pm, though it may be appropriate for a late afternoon wedding that will continue into the evening, so as to avoid everyone having to change.
