Beautiful! The phrygian dominant is my bread and butter. I also love emulating the Arabic sound of the Oud. I will give one more piece of advice. You see the problem with phrygian dominant in Arabic music is that it is a mode of equal temperament. You cannot access the Maqams played on the Oud with straight notes and slides on a fretted guitar like you can on a fretless oud and you get a more spanish sound this way instead. You need to use more bends and master 1/4 step bends and learn where to bend to get the right ones. This gives you access to the microtonal Maqams. I play this stuff on electric and I practice when and where to put the bends or I use my tremolo bar and kind of slap it for microtonal dips. I recommend finding videos of people demonstrating the Maqams on oud and using your guitar and finding the notes by ear. When he plays a microtone you can find where the 1/4 step bends need to go.

The scales used are the D flamenco mode (or Major-Phrygian scale or double harmonic scale) and the Phrygian dominant scale in drop D tuning. The difference between them being the major 7th and the minor 7th.

Wtf guys I'm getting deep chills. I been playing guitar for 24 years and never took but a few lessons and is been mostly rock n roll. I had a few years where I got into nylon guitar playing either Colombian Folkloric music or latin american rhytms and Cuban Nueva Troba (Silvio Rodriguez) and a couple classical pieces including Isaac Albeniz "Asturias" so I been all over the place but last few years I've been improvising on my electroacousric Taylor to whatever feels good and this hit home. Idk my roots. Idk who is my grandfather from my dad's side. All I know is we are Colombian but have some arab/somewhere in Spain features . Never been out there. Live in the US and always been told I look bit middle Eastern but specifically Armenia. Is this why I feel these things on E minor?? 😅
