Mr. Stuart, move the mill handle closer to the powerhead to help with the start and end cuts. The support underneath it rides the wood. You are THERE. You have a huge understanding of how it all works now. Another trick/tip, as the air filter gets dirty your jetting changes. When my saw starts running slow it is time to blow out the filter. Again to be repetitious, you've got it! Great job sir!

Great video! Those are some beautiful boards. I plan to do something similar to some of the big sycamore once I get it down. I have seen people mill them at an angle before as well and make some beautiful wood siding out of them. Great work my my friend! Very nice video.

Appreciate it! I do love red oak. I’ve never milled sycamore, but I do hope to someday.

Definitely do it! It is so rewarding to be able to make lumber. Especially since nice hardwoods cost an arm and a leg!

@@urbanlumberjackkind of off topic but if you are still wanting a spotted gum handle you should check out "The Wood Works Book & Tool Company". They are in Australia but shipped one to me in New Zealand. Spotted gum is a wonderful timber to shape and work with. Very dense fine shavings.

I would love a spotted gun handle! I've been looking for a company to ship me one for a while now. I will check them out thanks for the recommendation!

Special lumber here. One of the reasons why I like riving is because the tools are so simple and I don't have to deal with an engine that needs parts and or expertise to diagnose. Not to mention gas/oil/sharpening/tuning. I'm not unfamiliar with combustion engines but it's still a lot of added variables. I can't do certain things that a mill can though. Getting boards out of a log like this is pretty awesome. You could start building right away.
Not sure what's more work. Still moving around all the lumber with our bodies. This is pretty unique looking white oak from afar. I'm guessing you'll be having a lot of dry lumber soon from previous wood missions?

This has more color in it than I’ve seen In white oak. I’m curious if the color will stay or fade away as it dries. This is from the same oak tree I’ve had in a few other videos.
Riving is something I’m excited to get into! Your Instagram and videos are awesome, really helpful to watch the process before trying it out.
I’ve got one last log there to mill up, and I might try to split some handles out of it. Huge amount of wood came from that tree

@@urbanlumberjack Man I'm getting happy just hearing about how much lumber you're banking! We both got our hands on some good white oak. In my experience white oak is not this dark normally. Maybe this has to do with being a gnarly old tree? I've dug into some white oak that's old but it had a big straight trunk (it was a leaner though) and wasn't quite as old as this. Man I just love white oak. The only local timber I want more is probably Black locust, hickory would be nice but I don't mind softer woods since I shape by hand.
I bet it will the color will get bit dull as the outside dries but then when you oil or put a finish on, it will darken again. Glad my goofy documentation has given you some insight. I watched skillcults videos a lot but you really gotta do it for yourself to figure somethings out. Pretty proud of how many billets I can get out of log now. Just like processing a tree you learn how to be efficient after doing it once or twice.
The huge timber you have could easily yield 40 handle billets in a small chunk. You know what you're doing with drying lumber (cracking) so maybe you won't make the billets as long as I have in the past. It's a lot easier to rive 36 inches just due to moving the pieces then 50+ inches long. Although you don't mind moving some very heavy timber so maybe you'd decide on a longer billet. While it's tough it does feel awesome to have so many options after the hard work. Could replace a long peavey handle or make a 5 foot long chaga axe if I wanted haha.

The guiding bracket is on backward next to the powerhead, those curved pieces face the log to allow it to slide along. I'm not saying this is causing you a problem, they go the other way. Also, the 2x4 wood on top of the log should stick out at least 12 inches on both ends of the log, this way, both your entrance and exit are level, and the board stays crisp from end to end. Stay safe, Jim

Try some blue loctite on those hi lo screws if you haven't already. You will still be able to adjust them. I have the same issue with a Poulan pro saw. Those boards look awesome btw.

Are you building furniture? Selling it to specialty furniture houses? Anyway interesting tool.

I’m building furniture right now. A lot of tables, shelves, things of that nature. I’m trying to develop more of a lumber business, though, in addition to making furniture from what I mill. Thanks for watching!

If you are using or have been using gasoline with ethanol that might explain your carburetor issues. Use Recreational gasoline, 90 octane and it will clear up your issues.

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  ปีที่แล้ว

That’s a good suggestion. Ethanol free is super hard to find near me, I’m treating with fuel additive until I can find some.
