I was involved in a similar case back in the 80"s. I was dating a girl we went to a party she got wasted and I bought her home. The next morning when she woke up she realized that she was assaulted. She was choked and beaten up. She couldn't remember anything. The cops were all up in my shit for like a month until neighbor got drunk in a bar and admitted to the whole thing. I'm so glad that she survived but even she was confused by cop tactics for a bit and thought it might have been me. It just goes to show that anyone can be accused and not be guilty but the person you never suspect actually is the perpetrator. This crime could have happened a million different ways.

Yup, bruising around the mouth could mean that he was trying to cover her mouth to keep her screams from being heard. Come to think of it, you can’t cover strangle someone and cover their mouth at the same time. I’m thinking two people were involved.

How about this.... She and her boyfriend are having rough sex which includes choking to make the orgasm more intense, as some people will do this during rough sex, and he chokes her a little too long. When she die, she looses control of her bowels. He realizes what happens, drags her to the bathtub, either to immerse her in cold water (thinking to revive her), or to try to clean her up (maybe to get his DNA off her). He realizes the situation is hopeless, worries he will be charged with murder, So then him and his friend try to clean the apartment of fingerprints and DNA (hence all of the cleaning supplies and the disarray of the apartment). The bruising around the mouth maybe happened with the rough sex, or he tried to do CPR on her. As for the obstruction in her airway, I have no idea. Like Lamont said, I'm just an arm chair detective, so I'm just trying to imagine what might have happened.

Asphyxia is a very broad term. It covers everything from an obstruction in the airway (internal, also called "choking"), to external causes like strangulation (generally referred to as 'manual asphyxiation' or 'ligature asphyxiation' where an object was used) and 'mechanical asphyxiation' (which is generally something like crushing the chest so the person cannot breath).
If the medical examiner had used the term 'manual asphyxiation' that would indicate strangulation (usually by hands, or arms), but to go onto mention an obstruction in the airway becomes confusing. If it was a case of both obstruction and external strangulation, it should have been stated both likely contributed to death, but could not be determined if either was solely the cause of death or if it was a combination of both. Bruising on the neck and face indicates strangulation (and perhaps also, holding her mouth so she choked on the object).
As it does not sound like a break-in, the odds are high that it was someone she knew and let in (could even be a neighbour) but also the boyfriend should be a prime suspect. Whomever did murder Kelly put the apartment in disarray to look like 'burglary gone wrong', but it sounds like a poor attempt at staging the scene. Although I do not know the figures for the US, in the UK and Australia between 50-65% of women are killed by current or former male partners. I would suspect that in the US, the figure is probably at or near 50%.
Sounds like this case needs a cold case review.

Odd in that so little has been done if it indeed was a homicide - they claim it to be, so why no follow-up? No arrests?
If it is officially ruled homocide then how did those two guys get the heat officially off them for it? They would need platinum alibis and an award winning story they both would stick to, considering she was seen with them that night. There are pieces missing, not about that night but about the investigation.
It looks on the face of it, the investigation for this case who sloppy at best. A murderer walked free.

She is dead, not by her own hand, and not by something like a vehicle accident. Someone, a person, was involved, therefore it does not matter if it was on purpose or not. You're arguing the semantics between murder and manslaughter... both deserve long jail sentences, and right now, the perp is living their best life instead of being punished.
