The new Suzuki Swift Sport is a hot hatch aimed at buyers looking for strong performance combined with maximum value for money. Competing against the Renaultsport Twingo and Ford Fiesta Zetec S, the hot Suzuki comes with a bargain price tag of under £15,000. Powered by a 134bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine and featuring firmer sports suspension the Swift is very entertaining to drive on twisty, narrow roads - so much so, we named it CarBuyer's 2012 Best Hot Hatchback. It also has a good quality interior and generous cabin space for such a small car.

Awesome! N/A engine, 4cylinder, 6 speed MANUAL gear box, Japanese engineered, light and SMALL!!! I hope car manufacturers will stick to this formula for ever and ever!!
Robert Bidochon unfortunately they've got rid of it
Totally agree - and they definitely haven’t! Which makes this little car a bit more special and will potentially impact on used values. Imo it’s likely to hold it’s value well as a result
Really underrated car this. Does 0-62 in around 7.2 seconds. DOHC VVT 1.6 engine is a beauty
Does it really? Why does it say 8.7 everywhere
@@tuttosalve8352 from my experience these times are always making me laugh. My FN2 type R was supposed to be 6.4 and I could only ever get 7.6 out of it. I don’t know mate. The swift sport is very fast, it’s 0-60 is way quicker than they wrote down
@@Loawks I currently have an FN2 and considering swapping, if the SSS is really about 7 seconds that's pretty cool
I feel like the FN2 is pretty much that quick but you really have to thrash it lol
@@tuttosalve8352 The FN2 has more horse power, but the SSS has no weight. So the FN2 feels good on the motor way, speeds over 100 mph it feels safe, steady and planted. The SSS however doesn't feel safe when you start going 110 mph, its a small car. But on small roads, the city, or any normal day to day driving the SSS is so much more fun, it handles so well, way better than the fn2. But, they are different cars. Hot hatch vs Hot mini, ( sss doesn't feel that small though)
@@Loawks hi, I'm really tempted to get one of these, can I ask, is it ok on the motorway doing 65-70? I'm not a petrolhead just want something fun to drive round in that's cheap... Thanks!
I hate that whole "by today's standards" thing, 130+hp in a small car is plenty enough to have lots of fun in. And lots of power for an NA 1.6
Tripledonkey Especially that the car weighs only 1045 kg. The new Swift sport offers 4 hp more for 70 kg less! Should be enough to throw it from 0-62 in less than 8 secs.
John Blond
You mean the turbo or n/a?
I have it and yes, its fun, practical and economical.... HOWEVER, honda with its B16 engine achieved 160hp... no turbo, just another 1.6... So, why Suzuki cant?
Because power matters with the driver inside. If the driver is on the heavier side like myself, you want at least 150bhp in your cars or you don't get anywhere fast. My current car a Focus 1.8 is quite slow being a heavy car in the first place.
@@ralphsaad8637 3 doors is closer to 1020kg wich is great.its shame that this twin exaust have no sound at all.
About a year ago, I went to see a car that was listed in a local paper. The ad said, "perfectly running 1990 Suzuki Swift, 1.0, 5 speed, original owner". I went to see it and it looked average except for the odometer. This little car was used for long distance business driving on the freeway. It had 433, 687 miles on it and still ran fine !
umaxen01 I hope he was giving it away though lol
I drove the 5dr version for a couple of days and was totally blown by it. The century sprint is rated 8.3 s on paper but I can shave off a sec easily with some simple tuning.
Driving this car in an urban landscape where roads are packed with cars really made this car shine, as it's zippy and rather torquey. Coupled with Its relatively small body also made overtaking really easy.
What I really love about this car is it's handling. Omg, I just can't believe how precise the steering is as well as how minimal the body roll is while turning. Those reviews stating zero body roll is exaggerating, nevertheless, the whole handling package will simply thrill the enthusiastic driver.
What I don like mainly falls in it's interior. In singapore, the SSS is equipped with a rather backdated looking , non colored radio though it can be easily swapped out with aftermarket ones , while the leather seats are okay but not fantastic. Also the dash material like what Matt has said feels rather low quality. But hey, it still offers v decent practicality with the plentiful head and leg room, that is sufficient to squeeze all 5 Asian dudes including its driver into the car, rather comfortably.
The styling wise is spot on at least for me. Required minimal modding except for a 17 inch oz adrenalina since our dealers here have packed the SSS with 16 inchers. Slapped on a carbon fibre rear spoiler as well as new brembo brakes with red calipers complemented the swifts whole pearl white body. Absolutely no regret!
incantations be interested to know what simple tuning you would do to shave a second off that time?
Marcus Skyfall he's dropped a 5 grand turbocharger into it.....
To be fair though the Suzuki claimed figure of 8.7 is just wrong....
I drove a Cooper 1.5 and this back to back and I honestly think performance wise they are about the same.....
Have to say the Swift is a very surprising car, I have an 08 with the less powerful 1.5 vvt engine but its insanely responsive to throttle and the whole car is about 1000kg so it feels like a go kart. I was genuinely staggered how much fun the swift is and I have owned proper hot hatches and super saloons before. Try one.
what odometer mileage ?
How’s the reliability?
@@jude11117 It's been 100% reliable for the last 2 years I owned it
@@Slash1066 that’s great worth buying £300 0 second hand serviced last month with no issues whatsoever and it’s the 2014 model?
@@jude11117 I think they are great cars and you will love it
Well that's weird. I just bought a Suzuki Swift Sport, 2012, in this colour, and the license plate has only one letter difference at the end.
5 years later, how is it?

short and sweet review! Well done!
My mom had two waay back when. They were always advanced little fun cars
was waiting fo this...Tnx Mat
We have a normal swift. The ride could be smother. But apart from that, It's a great little car indeed. A car you can be proud to own. And James May likes it! Oh wait... Never mind. :-P
Mat...is that you?!
Great little car!! Love it!
Tnx for the review
Thank you for the review...
@Bilzy Nix it depends if you like a manual or dsg gear box. The fabia vrs only comes with a 7 speed dsg so if you prefer manuals then go with the swift. If you want driving power then pick the fabia or check out the mitsubishi colt ralliart.
we were expecting the veyron today mat :P(After the camaro and the ff)
Nice review as always very very decent
I would love to have one of those
Great as always :)
Great little car, brilliant N/A engine.
Mat sure has come a long way
Love this car!
What does the nav spec mean on it
plz review the mazda cx5 and the new renault clio 4
Yes it does
Love the new Swift Sport
Matt’s looking fresh
mat please review the FORD FOCUS ST 2013
I have the GLX and quality and perform for money in my opinion its the best in the range. I might put up a video review of the 2012 GLX.
I love this car
I myself preferred the 1.5 Exclusive, doors sound like a Mercedes, inside the car almost no noise, it's pretty silent, top 185km/h, very fast acceleration, average consumption 1: 17. If you drive above 150km/h the fuel consumption rises drastically. I found the seats too hard, so i bought 2 sheepskins, 2 pieces of foam 60cm long 50cm wide and 4cm thick and put these under the sheepskins. You are sitting a bit higher, you can easily put your elbow out of the open window, it is very comfortable also on long trips. Maybe a tip for older people, because it is more easy to enter and leave the car.
could you do a review for the Volvo S80 2012??!?! :D
Welcome in 2021 younger version of Mat
i wish suzuki swift was in america this car looks great
Guys! How does this compared to the VW Golf Mark V Sportline?
Is this car reliable ? I love the looks of it and I have a fiesta right now which is a pain all my weekly saving goes on it to keep it going , Im looking at one of these
kosar mustafa These will go on until the end of the earth. They're super reliable. Rent4Ring uses them as their main hire car for the ring.
Lovely car
tyres that are in a size that few manufactures make, and the seat is a bit high even at lowest setting
Love Suzuki!
i proper want this car
That's about 700,000 kilometers ! They used slightly taller tires and cruise control which averaged them 52 mpg @ a steady 62 mph (100kph)
like the projector xenon headlamp as sly.
Can someone compare this car ride comfort with Fiat Panda 1.2?
Thats a huge shift from FF & Camaro to a Swift. I wonder whats your felling mat...
What happened to the MERCEDES A Class?
where's the carbuyer bottle test?
This is a awesome car
Y el interior??
Hey everyone mat watson here from carwow so today im in a suzuki swift sport next to me is a toyota yaris and next to that is a mini cooper
haha I totally agree, I personally dislike the Veloster very much. IMO it looks like they took the front from a DS3 and the back from a C4 Coupe.
Also I found that the veloster didn't 'feel' fast like this Swift Sport and DS3 felt like.
these can be used as battering rams as a nurse rear ended me and caused my car to be a write of so good for strength.
1:36 Speaking of which, head to Topgear's website to read Hammond's recent review.
I Cant wait for Mat to review to Mercedes A-Class!
i know this might sound outrageously stupid, but can you make a review of the mighty audi quattro and the lancia delta integrale evo 2? i know you will have fun reviewing both :)
Cool
do some volvo reviews mat
why there are no protons . its also good .
Do you really doubt it?
Search "swift sport 2012 0 100" (take a look at teh optionauto video and the one that says 6,5 seconds, don't know why but I can't link them)
I really suggest you to take a testdrive and save money as the only thing you get in those Toyota and Subaru are better looks. Including more fuel consumption, 2/3 seats less and a much bigger/heavy car.
There is nothing like a Suzuki Swift.
God deamn Mat is so normal in this video
VW golf GTI !! make a review of it!
I have a feeling Mat is now driving off with all the cars and never returning them.
What do you judge as more fun? Fiesta 1.6 120hp or this Swift?
Swift sport has pretty stiff suspension and super fun to drive
Pretty much depends on if you want a turbo or NA engine
RallyVozac Save yourself visits to the garage and buy a swift
Next subaru impreza please! ;)
it's not worth the extra money... except if you put much value into the xenon lights and the "noise".
I got me the Swift Comfort... and it's great.
I would wait for the new Mazda2, but until then - this :)
Volkswagen Golf GTI next please
Suzuki Swift or the Skoda Fabia?
I rally these things and trust me, they're boss!!!
Hey...I saw some hair of the person sitting next to him :D
Amateur!!
Would've definitely bought this car if it came in 1.6 turbo. Nice car nonetheless
hmm I think the Veloster and the Citroen DS3 120VTI would be good rivals for this car.
nice
Seems. Sensational! irate furniture What do you think... !!
Why in the world does Suzuki not sell this in America?!?! Well under 20k and would be a genuine Veloster rival.
Swift Sport's an awesome car, and a bloke can drive one unlike a Mini Cooper.
this small car is faster than more powerful sports cars, I saw one Swift Sport blew off a C63 AMG off traffic lights it was amazing scene, poor AMG. Its on my list for next car. I'd imagine its faster than most BMWs and Mercs, Audi & VWs.
jack thorpe that's what happened bro I witnessed the race, the AMG was the sore loser.
I don think the c63 will lose to a swift sport at least if the c63 was even serious in the first place.
Hmmm i love my SSS to bits BUT honestly it appears that the merc driver was not even trying. Maybe the swift would have taken the first 10 meters, and be left in the dust. I know my place in traffic. Its a small relativly powerfull super mini and i treat it like that, no use getting involved with M3's and more powerfull cars, you can not make it at all. Althou it once was close between a Polo Gti and my little ball of fun :D (was a windey road, hence i managed to keep up)
mesothorium the Swift was like a rocket, I reckon the AMG was in poor condition as these high performance cars are thrashed to death but poorly maintained. German cars are good up to 100.000 kms then to the dump.
turpioSE Yeah could be, Air filter all clogged up, fuel filter clogged. Just poorly maintained, i'll give you that, but could it be that the swift was supercharged or turbocharged? Some nice kits are going around on the interwebz ;) Some even boosts to 200 Bhp. Nice 1045 kg with 200 Bhp :D
Do the Volvo V40, Matt!!
Wow it’s Matt
Cool :)
cool
I have the previous Sport Swift and to be honest this new one doesn't exactly convince me as much as a needed upgrade because the car seems heavier and bigger(and i guess that is the case because 0-100 is about the same as the old Sport that has 10hp less) outside appearance is still good but the old Swift actually looks so good that some times you confuse the new model with the old.
The interior is not really that huge of an upgrade, hell the steering wheel looks worse and less sporty. Who bright idea was to put the angle type thing in the middle of the steering wheel and replace what looked awesome with that? Fire him who ever it was Suzuki! The same with the bloody gear knob that went from the round sporty one to that weird thing (although that is easily replaceable).
Also the double exhaust with the grill on the previous Swift again looked more sporty and nice looking.
The one thing i give it is the more aggressive blackened round elements inside the head lights.
In general this sport edition of the new Swift is not as sport looking as the previous Swift sport version. We don't want a sport little hatchback to look like some after-market tune mess but at the same time we don't want it to look like a split personality one that can't decide if it's gonna be sport looking or not. The previous Swift hit a better balance(sure i am being a little picky the overall difference especially outside is extremely little but the back just doesn't look sporty because of the new double exhaust design).
The one thing i give it is the more aggressive blackened round elements inside the head lights.
12hp more and weighs slightly less, and it has a 6-spd box that's better than the old 5er.
I've had both and the current version is a bit better than the 1st one.
When the latest model came out in 2012, you could find the last of the previous one for £9,995 - I'm hoping the same happens next year when the new model with turbo'd engine comes out - 10 grand for the current SS would be a steal!
Just bought a 66 plate in blue as my first car 😄
mclste so cool!! I’m about to start my driving lessons and I really want one. How is it so far?
Daniella Hutcherson it’s an amazing first car if you can afford the insurance, perfect amount of power and weight where it allows you to get a real feel of controlling the car without it having too much power where you good loose it and crash. It really shines on country roads and is an absolute blast
Keren
The hair!!
Why Does Nobody drives on that road??
Make one in 1.8 turbo 4x4.
No speed limits were harmed in the making of this video =;-)
1:39 - allright, who's the cutie filming?

I think Suzuki makes great cars, too bad they arent popular here in America
We used to have this car, the ride was terrible but everything else was bridge
he did
that car is avaliable on america lol i live in mexico and im buying it tomorrow =)
It’s proof you don’t need eleventy-bajillion horsepower to have huge amounts of fun behind the wheel!
pakistan me price
Make a Skoda Rapid review!!
The ralley edition of this car is brutal and expensive.
*drives past camera at 30mph in 1st gear*
can i have the price?
