Have you watched Everything Everywhere All at Once?
Personally, having seen Swiss Army Man and liked it, I walked into the theatre bracing myself for weirdness, and was not disappointed. It's crazy how this movie has a little bit of everything, yet still remains cohesive and enjoyable throughout. Cheers to original films with original ideas!

This movie is phenomenal! One of the few movies that leaves a profound impression on me (Others being The Matrix, Interstellar). The Daniels are masters in making things unpredictable and keeping the audience glued to the screen. Their "Turn down for what" music video was the first sign of their genius.

@Eli Da silva yes and no. She had a pretty massive lull in recognition. For a long time, her history was in the realm of "fun facts" among film fans in an "Oh, that was her?" way due in no small part to her ability to disappear in a role. Blessing and a curse, I suppose. She's definitely getting a new level of recognition among general audiences. To sound a little less pretentious, I mean she's always been great, but she wasn't always a household name

Man, Michelle Yeoh is a phenomenal actress, truly one of a kind. Her grace, elegance, and martial arts prowess even in her old age, she's just as amazing as she was the first time I saw her in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. One of your previous videos, the one on Action Actresses, pushed me to watch more of her stuff, and now EEAAO starring her is A24's highest-grossing film domestically, so it was a pleasant surprise. Hollywood was really behind Hong Kong when it came to female action stars. So much so that many Americans today think that the concept of smaller women kicking bigger men's asses in movies is a new thing (heck, even Short Round took out some thugs). While western audiences in the 80s & 90s generally cited characters like Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, Buffy Summers, Xena, etc... as women of action; eastern audiences back then tended to cite actresses like Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Rothrock, Yukari Oshima, Moon Lee, etc... instead.

Their dynamic is always fun to watch (in the MANY movies they are together), but Maggie, somehow, moves me a little more. Heroic Trio was fun, but a little bizzare; it quasi-sequel, The Executioner, was even darker bc Michelle's character dies.
Anita Mui will also rest in our heart forever, esp those of us whom are Hong Kongers.
Like you. Maggie is my #1, but Michelle is a very close 2nd.
I think both of us were slightly more enchanted by Maggie because in Hong Kong, she was given many more dramatic
roles than Michelle, + Maggie always was magnificent.
Although Michelle was paid more, Yes, Madam also typecasted her.
I too, wish Maggie was still acting, but after winning @ Cannes, + 5x winner of Hong Kong Film Awards, Maggie probably
felt she wanted more time for herself.
As for a successful career in Hollywood, although speaking perfect English, Maggie was most likely disillusioned when her
scene was cut from the flick, Inglorious Bastard.
Unlike Maggie, except for her Asian Film Award, Michelle has unjustly not won any other major film awards.
      Although many of us fans know she is a highly skilled actor, Michelle may need the validation of a prestigious award;
      hence she is still acting.

@@maggiechan33 i think you're right about Michelle being typecasted. I'm glad she's gotten more dramatic roles in recent years though, we get to see a different side to her, and I'm sure she'll be well awarded with what she's done with EEAAO :)

I hope you are correct RE Michelle being acknowledged for EEAAO; I still don't trust the bigwigs in Hollywood.

How could she be compared to Maggie Cheung? Maggie Cheung has won numerous acting awards in HK and Taiwan, in fact the most awards but Michelle has yet to win a single award from HK or Taiwan.

Thank you so much. Michelle Yeoh is almost exactly my age. I have been following her since Police Story 3. Even in her action movies you could see her acting abilities. I have always longed for her to appear in a role by a director of “slow cinema” so that the flicker of every expression and gesture would show clear.

This is a beautiful essay on Michelle Yeoh, One of my favorite actors. I constantly forget that not everyone grew up on Hong Kong and Black cinema the same way I did. From 1997-1999 I was obsessed with Jackie Chan and his movies. I was amazed when I saw Yeoh in Supercop(Police Story III). I've been a fan ever since. It still bothers me that there are people that have no idea who she is.

Never mentioned but probably one of the best Yeoh films I have seen was Far North, a pretty grim
drama about Yeoh's character being in competition with a younger woman for the affections of a man.
    Well worth a watch.
Yeoh started out as a ballet dancer, no doubt the basis for her smooth, fast moves.
