He had a life of extreme violence and left it all behind for Love. Karma ended up paying him back for his crimes - but still, he wanted peace.
There's multiple instances in each film where he gives the opposition a chance to stop and leave him alone - but they can't. And so he retaliates.
That's why we root for him, because he's the Quiet man that has a capacity for great violence who simply wants to be left alone, in peace.
