My heart absolutely melted when Cynthia began comforting Julia. I feel like this video really allowed Julia to become vulnerable in ways she has never revealed before. I really appreciate how Mesfin shined spotlight on Julia because she truly has done so much for the music industry that nobody really talks about. I hope Julia becomes more confident in her work because she is such a gem!!
Coming back to this video after listening to the MASTERPIECE of Billie’s new album and hearing her say that she thought she had lost her writing ability is insane. Hit Me Hard and Soft is her best work to date. 🎉
Julia is so shy and down to earth, one wouldn't believe she's such a genius songwriter. She deserves to embrace all the love and recognition she gets from her work ❤️❤️
The gentleman conducting this sit down, Mesfin Fekadu, has a wonderfully wide breadth of knowledge and excellent presence. Engaging in a way that makes him feel more like a participant in a discussion than a staffer sent there to read a list of questions. love it.

Cynthia Erivo is a treasure. Warmth emanates from her like no one I've ever seen before and that's how it feels just through the screen; I can't imagine how beautiful her energy must be in person. And I love all the moments between Cynthia and Billie in this.
She’s kind of like the female version of Ryan Tedder. What a talent! And her humility through it all is so overlooked, I didn’t realize how humble she was until now. She should definitely own it more than she does, it’s ok to brag a little bit knowing how much she’s done in such a short amount of time. If she doesn’t want the insane fame, that’s okay and we should respect it, but she should really think more highly of herself. That’s probably the first time I’ve actually thought this about a celebrity!
@@odeleya1768 Ryan Tedder still has his band and tours that way with a crazy following. Julia has been on massive tours as well and has a huge fandom…she’s definitely a celebrity and has been in the game professionally for almost 20 years so she isn’t new.
@@chachabunny123ut I realize that and that’s definitely why I compared her to Ryan Tedder. By insane fame, I meant it’s ok for her to not credit herself on certain songs and give herself the recognition in that way if that’s not what she wants. She’s definitely famous, but fame wise, she’s not as popular as she definitely should be according to her talent and everything she’s done. And she’s had this fame for less than 10 years, since Issues came out.
Man Jon Batiste really touched my heart with him sharing the experience with his wife. I'm so glad that she's okay now and its also inspiring to see them overcome those challenges and come out with something beautifull.
She wrote an incredible book called Between Two Kingdoms about a large part of her cancer journey. A friend of mine lent it to me after I came out of my own cancer journey and it was incredibly empowering and humbling. So beautifully written.
When Billie talks about her song “What was I made for” I got chills just like I did the first time I listened to it❤ Thanks to all these incredible artists/song writers for making songs that inspire us and connect us, mostly through music! 🎶
@@Chips185the fact u only mentioned the song that was 5 years go 😂😂😂 get some help coming out from that cave, better than singing in cursive and non memorable songs
cynthia's words to julia speak directly to my heart, she is absolutely amazing in every way. the way she is so passionate about empowering other women is truly beautiful
John's divine feminine energy fits so perfectly into this space. He doesn't feel the need to dominate or even to feel uncomfortable as the only man in the group, he's just flowing through the experience being gentle like a breeze. He has a very clear and strong spiritual energy that emanates from his being almost as if he himself is a song. Him and his wife are beautiful and I pray more love over their lives. I lost my mom to cancer just two weeks ago and the songs he made about his wife are just beyond breathtaking. So many people at this table are keeping art alive and it's a blessing as AI starts to take over certain art spaces. Human beings can be the rawest form of art. I love all of this so much.
So sorry for your loss. Hope any pain eases soon for you and your loved ones. Really appreciate your view on the duality of energy within us all as well. You speak so poetically.
Based on his documentary about being there for his wife undergoing cancer, it's clear that he has a deep respect for women's artistic, poetic and emotional expression which in many women's experience is a rarity. So I wanted to give him props. I'm not apologizing for saying what I said and it seems like people agree with me. If you do the same thing, go off sir! @@GarageStudio7
I'm an author, not a songwriter, and this is still one of the best and most helpful/resonant roundtables I've ever seen. The discussions about inspiration, ownership, fear, doubt and creation - not to mention the genuine support and love shown for each other and the brilliant moderation? Brilliant on all counts.
I was crying so hard while he was telling his story about his wife and how creativity helped her and of course them both with the healing process like dude it was beautiful.
And I think about Cynthia’s comment (consistently chasing Billie) ALL THE TIME! Like…when is the collab?! 👀👀 Also, when he asked what their dream collab was I saw Cynthia look in Billie’s direction soooo… Lastly, how can someone not be mesmerized by her! She’s a goddess walking amongst mortals! Lol I literally worship her! 🥰
Watching Olivia and Billie sit at the same table together makes me so happy, I SWEAR the internet would literally break if they made a song together. My life would change!!
this round table is definitely one for the books, they managed to get together in a room 3 of the biggest pop stars of the 2020s decade so far Dua, Billie and Olivia. I wish there was a round table in the 2010s where we could se Ariana, Taylor, Lady Gaga etc or the 2000s with Britney, Beyoncé, Xtina etc So this definitely feels like a time capsule
and it’s the fact i haven’t heard about it until now. they don’t speak of those things on stan twitter, strangely enough 😵💫😵💫 or maybe i just missed it
Beyoncé is NOT a songwriter so she doesn’t deserve to be at the “SONGWRITING table” at all. Her writers and all the people she lied on for YEARS should come instead of her.
I loved this so much. Hearing Jon talk about his wife, Billie talk about wanting to quit, Julia having a hard time accepting her accomplishments. It was such a beautiful conversation
Stop when Cynthia was talking about the artists making things that people can hang onto when they don’t have anything else touched me. Wether it’s songs, film, or writing it’s so amazing as a listener to connect on a personal level with a song and how an artist is feeling
Cynthia looks like an african goddess. Wow as a songwriter I truly appreciate this roundtable, hearing some stories of some these people's talent I admire so much. Please have more musician roundtables !
Julia is so articulate and lovely , Cynthia amazing and full of empathy, Billie is a total genius , Dua is very warm and generous , Jon is incredibly versatile and Olivia is super sensitive and involved ...
Cynthia’s commentary for the other artists was both insightful and affirming. She seems like such a cool person. Already loved her work but this interview gave me a whole new appreciation for her ❤️
Cynthia is enthralling. So beautiful and so well spoken. I’m glad the others acknowledged it out loud so she knows! Round tables are my absolute favourites!
this is one of the best thr roundtables to ever happened. the conversation, naturally occurred, was so meaningful and flew so eloquently. loved jon's story and cynthia's encouragement.
This is how you interview and cover musical artists. This is an expansive, supportive, inclusive, and insightful conversation that should be seen by any fan of these artists, or music, in general. Kudos.
I’m happy to see these THR roundtables!!! Cool to see Jon Batiste continuing to flourish! Cynthia, Dua Lipa, Olivia, and Julia are absolutely divine! But I save my biggest congratulations to Billie Eilish. She is one of those singer-songwriters who as soon as you hear her voice you know that she has something special and specific that she wants to express. Any time she’s on tv performing, I stop what I’m doing and listen to her song. She is a major talent. Congratulations to all of them! I’m loving the laidback nature of these talks. All pretentiousness of a typical talk show are not here. It’s always great to see.
absolutely. it’s interesting; i think they all show a deep admiration for billie’s art in some way. at this table, cynthia’s mind / presence kept me the most captivated / intrigued & she seemed genuinely touched by billie’s art. there’s just something in billie’s art that feels so raw & at the core of her humanity that really moves you. jon batiste was also making this point in that it’s something where anybody feels they’re able to connect to
Cynthia’s knowing of herself and sharing the power of it at the table was so moving. There is power in sitting in your accomplishments and being proud of your talent.❤
Thank you so much for this round table. A rarity to hear musicians & the mc was so gentle and gave space to all. Such a delight. Listening to creatives inspire- as Cynthia said to Julie, is so important. If you were a songwriter, learning that there are many paths to take, creating in collaboration, or for yourself are equally important. Julie's body of work is mindblowing. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼💜
I love that Julia was included in this. For many years I've seen her credited in all those artists' songs and I was like damn she's so talented and deserves so much more credit. Love her and all the incredible humans in this table, it was such an inspiring interview
The actual host/moderator (NOT YVONNE ORJI although Yvonne might be great) - but rather the person wearing the hat…is THE GREATEST I’ve seen from the Hollywood Reporter. They seem natural at it and informed and that there is sincerity and passion and depth present in the conversation. Nicely done.
I saw the Hunger Games film and the lyrics in the music sung in it and that played in the credits was truly the kind to give goose bumps. It really embodied the subject matter, the feeling of liberation/freedom sought in the franchise by all the people made to fight. I thought it was really beautiful and well written! 👏🏾
The author (Suzanne Collins) actually wrote the lyrics to the songs sung during the movie, but Olivia’s credits song was beautiful and lived up to the quality of the movie’s songs for sure
This whole interview just brought so much bliss in me. There were lots of relatable moments that I never have talked about with anyone in my life just cause we never had conversations like these. This is soo fun to watch.
Billie Eilish with that blissful song of hers ‘What Was I Made For’ the portrayal she enlisted in that song is so real and empowering. The juxtaposition of floating and then falling down, and the mental health of not knowing how to feel & sadness is so human of her. I feel it’s the best song written of her discography. I’m so excited to see what she brings on in 2024.
I clicked on the video to listen to Billie. I love her as an artist. But that whole conversation was so beautiful! I loved every word and emotion each artist told. It's so human. You forget alot about it because of their fame, but this!? It was just so real and loving. These people are smart. The way they express deep feelings is for sure not easy. This hour long talk went by like nothing.
THR Roundtables have come such a long way since the start. This conversation was so casual, so cozy, so chill, so connected. The moderator guided it perfectly. Beautifully done, THR. Looking forward to more of this.
I love the sweet moment between Julia, Billie and the wonderful words that Cynthia (having also more years of experience) said to Julia 😭❤️ beautiful… and I love us women for this because we immediately support each other when someone has a problem, because we know what our weaknesses are, we are often too unsure of our abilities and skills and we are often ashamed of it, much more than men in our careers …. And for example as a fan of Billie every time she won an award she often said others deserved it not her .. always awkward moments 😭 she always feels ashamed for every result she achieves and she doesn't like it when people compliment her, even if as a pop artist with that success it's impossible, but she just likes working doing her job bc she knows it’s just her job there is nothing special to talk about it .. here too, she demonstrated that she still has no self-esteem in herself even if on the outside she shows that she is also a badass rebellious stubborn strong woman but this is just a protective shell for empathetic and sensitive ppl like her (her fans know her really well about this) and you can feel this, she immediately felt and saw that Julia was struggling bc she was embarrassing in that moment .. and she immediately touched her hands and everything .. she was not ok for Julia… she is REALLY empathetic and she hates when ppl are not ok … she does this with everyone and her fans too 😊 she always likes to hug / help her fans and ppl in general and she talks to them having fun like they are all best friends, she also go to the park and ask ppl to play frisbee with her 😭 only her fans will understand how amazingly she is inside. And Billie and Julia have the same soul, Billie just hides it better with that badass sometimes not simple but protective attitude. And Julia is an amazing talented humble woman ! And it's true that women are more sensitive to certain things and therefore have more difficulty in stuff like this, but it's what makes us special as women in our work, we always question everything and complicate our lives 😂 because we “like” to live our life fully (too much 🫣) and we want to demonstrate how much we are worth, we know that we could give more and therefore what we give is never enough for us … but then once we grow up we become like Cynthia , with an incredible inner power... amazing thoughtful mature woman ❤️
I think Billie always says other ppl deserved the awards during speeches mostly bc of the unhinged stans on social media who cry tattoo tears after their fav loses an award and goes on and on abt it. They can make a young person feel undeserving unfortunately
@@spacebar9733 this summer she was headlining the biggest festival in Brazil (she also made history for the Biggest crowd ever there +100k ppl) and she went to the park alone with her family and she asked some guys if they wanted to play frisbee with her and her brother and then they realized it was Billie 😭 and they played for 40 minutes together .. she also organized many shows in small clubs for her fans to be closer with them during her global tour (the biggest of 2022 by a woman) she goes to the cinema etc she is living her life like a normal person , she even remembers the names of her fans😂 she drives her car alone and stops to met and hug her fans Etc she is amazing… completely herself and not a fake product always perfect following a script of that industry. This is why many ppl hate her too, bc she is not afraid to be herself no matter what, if she think something , wrong or not, she will tell you that even on tv 😅 and she is not afraid to be authentic and herself with her ups and downs and with her mistakes. And she doesn’t want to be a role model for kids, parents exist for this. She is just living her life.
@@SupernaturalLove100 exactly she also hates hate in general, she also doesn’t care about that world and society rules, she just likes living her own life making her own music and art in general since she was 15. She doesn’t care about awards or success that’s why she also doesn’t make the usual easy fun dance pop music, following the easy success .. with radio friendly music .. she just likes being herself always and making art . She was also happier when she lost all 8 Grammys nominations last year.. she was SOO happy 😂 especially for other artists/friends who won that year, but she wasn’t happy when she won. She has always this “idgaf” attitude but only bc she doesn’t like boxes and she is like a stranger most of the time in that world, even if everyone loves and respects her in that world bc she is a really sweet and charismatic girl, but superficially this society is not ready for authentic real and also too much charismatic and rebel women like her 😅 just like with Madonna. They are real artists, and real artists are usually the most unique sometimes weird ppl . Even if they are completely different, bc I know Billie could die to save a person's life, Madonna wouldn't even look if a person was dying ... 🤣 (I love Madonna but she has 0 respect for ppl even MJ everyone said this) but they are similar for that rebellious part… very similar. Billie has the MJ and Lady diana soul, but the charisma and attitude of Madonna and probably Kurt Cobain.
Incredibly inspiring to listen to these amazing artists talk to each other. Love the mutual respect, support and curiousity. Cynthia and Billie supporting and praising Julia also brought me to tears. You own it girls
There is some beautiful shimmery souls in that room. I love how this round table thing is honoring artists for their art, and showing that it is fascinating and interesting to talk about what you do, and not to ham it up, or just answer questions about your private life and useless anecdotes about silly things that happened to you, but actually talking process. It is not boring and people love to hear this.
I love Billie's answers! They are so honest and make her so likeable to me. I love the little details, like her association between "Sail" and The Walking Dead, so wholesome
I am 30 seconds into the video & I just _had_ to pause to pay homage to _one of the greatest to ever do it!_ It is so absolutely delightful to see _thee one & only_ *Cynthia Erivo* on this panel of songwriters. She is so incredibly gifted & criminally underrated. Cynthia’s talent is out of this world, she is indeed & without fail or doubt, a master of her craft- _spectacularly prodigious._ *Hands down- one of the best singer songwriters of our generation.* Not to mention her _breathtaking beauty.._ inside & out!💜 Her song _Fly Before You Fall_ is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard & helped me get through one of the hardest times in my life. Her song _Signal_ will always remind me of when my wonderful husband & I first started dating almost a decade ago now. 💜🫶🏽🥹 I am so happy to see her, she always fills my heart with joy.. she sings like an angel.💜
I could watch all of them talk for ever!!! This is such an amazing group of people to have at this table and I'm so very thankful for not only the incredible artists here but also all of the work behind the scenes from the Hollywood Reporter. From the production, editing, hosting, the questions you put together, all of it was so profound and powerful. This makes something in my soul so happy and at peace. I'm in love with this concept and video as a whole. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What I love about this, is how respect towards each other’s stories, successes and lessons are complimented with shared values, mutual respect and relatable creativity. As a creative myself, listening to them makes me feel included despite not being as successful in their scale as they are. The feeling of relating to their processes makes it so inclusive and accepting. Definitely the best interview I’ve watched this new year and I’m grateful for them. Thank you, Cynthia, Olivia, Dua, Jon, Billie, Julia, and to the interviewer, staff and crew of Hollywood Reporter. 💜
Julia is such an amazingly talented and gifted songwriter and singer, I wish she didn't struggle so much with anxiety. The part at 51:00 really made me tear up because I could feel from the screen how panicked she was getting and it's heartbreaking to see that in real-time.
How is this comment not higher in the thread. I felt awful she kept ASKING them to stop listing people she’s wrote for and he just ignored her and went ON and ON - as she’s visibly shaking and saying she’s uncomfortable.
@@kellikroehling7009 yea I wasn’t a fan of that or trying to force her into her “power” cause other people look up to her. That was incredibly condescending and stressful
@@rydbthatsme not condescending, Cynthia is emotionally intelligent, it's just very British to not like being complimented - you're meant to be humble and not brag, so in the moment she thought it was that - but it's more Julia's an introvert and doesn't like a lot of attention.
I feel the situation was handled well in a group setting of filming. Each person in that round table showed emotional empathy toward her. There was safety in the group. I felt Cynthia was trying to share her grounded energy with Julia. While others did the best they could to offer physical comfort and words of affirmation. From my life experience, having anxiety in a group where everything is safe has been some of the best moments of learning - rather relearning comfort, ease, and being a human interacting.
I love how every person at the table and how they were able to talk about their accomplishments and songs they made over the years and being able to relate to one another and understanding where an artist was coming from at the time is amazing honestly loved this so much wish these same people were here again I would love to see another video of the same people at the table just talking this was so wholesome
51:38 I felt her anxiety spike up so much that I started crying and shaking more for her-like in that moment, I understood exactly what she felt with happiness and shock and embarrassment and like everything all together and not being able to properly word her thoughts as to why she felt that way
Yes! I don’t know how she kept it together because I would have been CRYING, the more I try to be strong the more I fall apart and I knew if I was in her shoes at the moment I would fall apart.

Thank you for this set of people who we never knew we needed🫶🏼
Olivia talking about how a song hit her so hard the moment itself is embedded in her memory is exactly how I felt about her first single, Drivers License. I was sitting in an Uber and, to this day, it’s the only time I asked the driver to turn up the radio. The street, the part of the day, where I was going, it’s all embedded into the moment that song hit me for the first time. Been a fan ever since! The rest of Sour was a great piece of teenage nostalgia (for this aging dude), and despite the songs which rightfully charted, it’s “Hope Ur OK” which hits me the hardest and is my personal fave. I wish her a long and healthy career.

I love that they all acknowledging what each other said and quoting them. So much respect and so much talents.
Jon’s story about his wife is so touching. I love how he shouted out her listening to Billie and Olivia’s music
I was crying so hard while he was telling his story about his wife and how creativity helped her and of course them both with the healing process like dude it was beautiful.

Also, when he asked what their dream collab was I saw Cynthia look in Billie’s direction soooo…

Dua is such a lovely person. She seems so down to earth and sweet.
I loved this so much. Hearing Jon talk about his wife, Billie talk about wanting to quit, Julia having a hard time accepting her accomplishments. It was such a beautiful conversation

Cynthia is enthralling. So beautiful and so well spoken. I’m glad the others acknowledged it out loud so she knows! Round tables are my absolute favourites!

This is how you interview and cover musical artists. This is an expansive, supportive, inclusive, and insightful conversation that should be seen by any fan of these artists, or music, in general. Kudos.
Everyone at this table is so damn talented. This entire conversation was extremely inspirational to me as a songwriter.

I’m so excited to see what she brings on in 2024.
the way Billie talks and had everyone super into what she’s saying, LOVE HER!
That's the thing. Despite how much fame and success someone has or lack thereof, it's important to look past all that and see them as human beings.
I did not expect to cry during this. My gosh. The amount of talent at that table is incredible.
Billie is such a rambler it’s so sweet. I LOVE people who can just talk and flip between topics
You just made me a Billie stan lol
