    Stuff we use:
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    Lovely!! My wife gave me assistance and helped guide me to a better me. I’ve been living my plan B for years because of the money and age started to creep up on me so I just started doing it from where I was. Now I have three award winning shorts, 1 feature just picked up by Amazon Prime Video and a number of projects in development based on what I can handle myself. I love these interviews. I am where I am because of them!!

    Great interview that couldn't have been posted at a better time! Half asian half dutchie here who also hopes to succeed as a filmmaker and wants to move to America. It's a huge step and brings a certain amount of anxiety with it, the more I learn in film school the more I realize I have still so much more to learn but I can't picture myself doing any other job.

    initially when he said he wanted to have the "Will Smith" career I brushed it off ....but after watching for ten or fifteen minutes it became so clear ...he speaks and moves his hands just like Will Smith ...
    ...and I don't know much about making a career as an actor ...but there has to be something genuine about the person ....there's has to be something truly "yours" that you bring to these auditions ..you gotta know who you are and be really "you" out there.
    When I realized how closely he manages to speak and sound like Will Smith I couldn't help realize that maybe that was an obstacle for him in making it out there.

    I will pushback a 'little' on what he's saying about stability... as it breeds complacency. You get the steady job, the spouse... that's great for security but then you start having the mortgage payment due when you hear, "Wait, you want to use how much money for a film that you won't make money back on?" Then kids... and the money is tied-up in school. Before you know it, you went from an ambitious 23 year year old filmmaker arriving in LA... five years later directing music videos for major labels, selling TV shows... then... you're 46. Obviously, that's me. My 'day job' is at a 'major studio' but I can't pitch internally... I'm just an indie filmmaker still, trying to carve out time between the steady job and weekend schedule. I'm currently trying to get my first actual feature off the ground, I have a lot saved for it... but then you have to hire 'name' actors and get a business plan together to recoup that money or you're gonna hear about it from your spouse.

    If 99% of people fail in Hollywood, that would be because there are 100 times more people trying than Hollywood wants. Some of these people aren't really trying. Some really don't have what it takes. Mostly it is luck.

    Any advice can be opposed with an equaly valid counter advice. Just do what feels right to you, and have no regrets either way. For instance, one could argue that leaving option B and C open only strips you from a dose of pressure that is necessary to succeed...same with living with your parents, same with pursuing a money making career...Also if you want to take advice from anybody, always keep in mind that they might have an unconscious agenda: to justify and legitimize their own choices, mistaken or not.

    There's a reason why wealthy artists and nepo babies do well. Many of them are incredibly talented. But they also have wealth and connections to fall back on and utilize while they work towards their dreams. We have to create our own versions of that situation. Whatever that looks like. Whether that's developing a skill outside of the business that pays well. Or some other formulation. Those that manage to do that, tend to make it.

    The way I see plan A. If a basketball player wants to play in the NBA and doesn’t make it. Take your plan B in the same industry you mastered your craft with plan A and turn it into a business which = that person is now making a full-time income being a basketball trainer. Not being a mechanic. Having the 2nd trophy is still winning in life🥈

    What are your thoughts on having a back-up plan?

    • @sami_ek
      @sami_ek ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't agree with the idea of a backup plan as a what if it fails scenario, because that kills the fire within. But I 100% agree with the necessity of learning a skill or trade that can earn you money today, the more independent the better.

    • @starbright6579
      @starbright6579 ปีที่แล้ว

      My back up plan is if I don't become a film producer or screenwriter I will be a police officer and I'm actually going to school for that right now. I study criminal justice, creative writing, screenwriting, and film producing. Now I can't make money from the creative occupations as fast as I can from the law enforcement occupation, but what I can say is even though the police is more realistic than the filmmaking at least filmmaking I will make more money but I love criminal justice I always wanted to be a cop since I was a kid, but they need to pay police officers more money because I can write a script and sell it to a producer for $5 million and police's is a great job and they risk there lives saving people and don't make no money. If I become a screenwriter and film producer I will make more money than with being a cop. I'm not being greedy, but they just need to pay cops more money because I want to see myself make my movies and see my movies on tv because being a cop is very dangerous most cops don't come back home to there families so God be with me so I can see my movies made and see it on tv. I don't want to get hurt in the line of duty.

    This guy said nothing for 20 minutes. Dear God. How is anyone watching this and commenting positively.
    What does he do? What is his advice to get there? We don’t even know what happened after acting? Also he quit acting based on “a sign” so we can’t expect him to say anything logical. He literally didn’t mention what he does now (after googling I figured it out). Jesus. You can see why people can’t make it in Hollywood. Frankly he seemed to be making up dates and timelines. Basically he got an independent movie made and is now BS’ing everyone trying to create a narrative and a brand.
