Just moved into an apt in a bldg that used to be a factory, everything inside is new. I have 3 br and 1 & 1/2 baths. The kitchen and both bathrooms have the larger vent on the ceiling where air is obviously blowing out of as it can be felt & heard-so we only have 3 large blowing audible vents. The bathrooms have both the large vent on the ceiling AND the smaller adjustable vent. The other rooms have only the smaller adjustable vent. The bedrooms also have only the smaller adjustable vent. The bedrooms are HOT as if nothing is coming out of the small vents placed in those rooms (there are no large vents in any of the bedrooms). The rest of the place is cool. We can't figure out why the bedrooms are so hot at night or if the doors are closed. The smaller vent which each bedroom has were checked to make sure they were open but they're so high up the maintenance guy has to use a stick to check the lever on then. He claimed they are open but it's still hot, I have a feeling nothing is coming out of them but I also don't know if anything is supposed to be coming out of them but I assume there should be cool air since the vents with the lever are the only vents in each bedroom. My bedroom has 2 of them but no large square vent. I don't get it. I was told the maintenance guy would come back out to check but I have a weird feeling the bedrooms were supposed to have both the larger vent blowing air and the smaller vent with the lever but this is all new to me. I looked all over the net & can't figure out if these small vents in the bedrooms are supposed to be cooling the bedrooms off or not. I have a bad feeling we don't have any ac to the bedrooms since those large square noisy vents are not in any bedrooms. been searching the net for days & clueless. The bathrooms have both, bedrooms only the small ones with the lever which are 10ft above our heads but the bedrooms are hot, we're waking up sweating.

Good evening David. Does it matter if the return is located directly below the unit with no duct between? I currently have a 4 ton unit with a return register sized 20 x 30 as installed when the home was built 28 yrs ago. According to the measurements this return is to small for the unit installed. Thanks

I have a supply vent that I took off while painting the walls. Upon replacing it I noticed that it can be installed with the vents supplying the air up towards the ceiling or down towards the floor. Does it matter which direction I install the wall register? It's located close to finish floor & there is a return vent also. Thanks in advance.

Thanks David. Where could I find this type of information. Is it on the Trane Duculator? If not how can I go about sizing grills myself? Remember this is all new to me. Enjoy your videos, just trying to learn how to calculate duct work, and supply and return cans and grills are just as important ,as the size of your duct work. Is they a chart that you run your finger down and compare grill size to the size duct?

Registers and diffusers are selected for face air flow velocities of no more than 700 feet per minute by doing that you will have a quite and comfortably system. I want you to know on the return side the air velocity should not exceed 400 cfm or you may hear it. The ultimate system you will never know when the system is on or off it will just feel comfortably . Hope this helps.

If you need 8 " round flex you need to use a 10x10 can or you could use a 12x8 can. Never exceed 700 fpm on supply. As far as return if you needed 12" I would use a 16x16 return grill or larger.. You 200 square inches of return per ton minimum. I hope this helps. Thanks for asking.

David, if you are using passive ventilation in a room there is no for a pass-through grille right? I have a room I am ventilating with a supply and return register and I will have the fan on the return meaning the supply will be passive. From what I undestand, the pass-through grille is only if you have a fan on both right?

there is a pass thru grill on the big return whole by the air filter for the home. is it okay, or do I have to get a fancy one like the return grill you have?

Does it matter which direction passthrough grills are directed to slant up towards the ceiling or downwards when installed above each bedroom door? And is our directed the same on the inside of bedroom and outside the door? Does it matter?

Hi I bought a newer home I have larger grills at the top of my house and and smaller grills at the bottom. I have central air and gas heat. Cannot find return air in my house but I put a piece of paper up to top grill and it was lightly sucking air into it. I have 5 of these grills in my house but no grill large grill for return air so are these 5 grills my return air and how should I filter them. Thanks Tom

Hi. Thank you for this. We recently purchased an apartment that has the wall ones… but. It has vertical levers, behind a set of the sale type but horizontal and then behind that those grey/silver looking ones I see on the back side of the one’s you have. In some rooms, those grey ones are closed in others open. But we don’t know how to get to them to adjust them. The vertical and horizontal ones we can move with our fingers. But not the one’s in the back and there is no leaver or button or anything visible to us to try. Do you know how to fix this issue? Thanks.

Sorry David, but you went over my head on that one. Can you explain a little more in detail? Lets say that I have figured that I need an 8" round supply duct in a room. How do I figure the size grill I need. And say I have a 12" return. How do I know what size grill?

Once you figure out the size duct that you need to run, whether it be supply or return, how do you determine the size boot and grill to use to match the cfm of the duct?
