    I would not recommend putting those plastic anchors that close to the edge of the drywall. There is a very good chance you can blow out the drywall in that spot. I would recommend framing out around the vent opening with with 2x4s because that whole opening is now a weak spot in the wall.

    I can't believe the silly questions here. The furnace is above the original hole on a platform in a little closet hence the high door. The bottom of the furnace where the air filter goes sucks air into the furnace from the hallway into the original vent below the door and now also the new one this awesome dude just made

    I too have this set up. However, my return is much larger. My concern is that this return has just been rebuilt and it has a plywood roof (bad off gassing)and some black coated insulation all around and a concrete floor. Sure, I have a filter right behind the grille, but what good does that do if the air goes right into this toxic box? I have just cleaned it, it was left filthy. Am I missing something here? Is this not the air that gets cooled and circulated through out the house?

    • @MAGAMAN
      @MAGAMAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plywood is fine. The whole off gassing thing is a bunch of fear mongering about nothing. Fear is how politicians get you to pass laws that take your rights away and make them money. There is a whole lot of insider trading going on whenever these new "safer" products get mandated by government.

    We recently had a new return vent added beneath a new furnace, just as you did here, in the exact same location. A bad, musty smell has been coming from this new return vent now for weeks. Any idea what this musty smell could be? It's worse when the heater runs. It's a brand new system, new filter beneath the furnace, all ducts recently cleaned as well.

      Could it be the condensation pump or the pipe connected to the pump? Mine was completely clogged with algae and gunk

  • @AxelfoleyTheGreat

    Quick question. My home has a similar setup. Inside my return is just dirt. Do I need to line the inside with some type of insulation to keep the system from sucking up dirt or is that what the filter is for?

    • @DIYProjectsByDave
      @DIYProjectsByDave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching. The bottom of the return in our house is concrete. So I didn't need to cover it. The filter will keep all the dirt out of the furnace. But if your's is a dirt floor, then I would suggest covering the dirt with plastic sheet and some insulation for better efficiency of the furnace.

    I have a raised ranch where my return is in the hallway. the vent opening was 2x2 but the vent was old and damaged I bought a new vent that's 2x1 cuz that's all I could find at lowes or home depot. Now it seem to not allow enough airflow in cuz it humms and whistles. My furnace is in the basement laundry room. Can I just add another vent off the same duck down there? Or will it cause problems?

      This helps with better air flow but probably would not change the noise level.

  • @lvvry1855
    @lvvry1855 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't get it. Where's the ducing? Is this vent going anywhere? Also, unless the venting restricts the positioning, the grill could have been centred on the wall for aesthetics.

    • @DIYProjectsByDave
      @DIYProjectsByDave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching. It is hard to show on the video but they furnace is located on the other side of that wall. It is on a plaform and the open space under that platform is being used as the cold air plenum. This vent lets more cold air into that open space.
      Yes I could have centered it on the wall, but I thought it looked better being evenly spaced with the original one around the corner. You can move it to where you think looks best

  • @josbrun
    @josbrun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    OK, your opening 30” x 10” is rated for 2200 CFM of air flow at 0.1 friction rate, which is enough for a 5 Ton system or 120,000 BTU furnace. What maters most, is the size of your filter, that’s where the restriction is. What a waste of time and energy, misguided effort.

    • @Samlol23_drrich
      @Samlol23_drrich 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is the key a low restriction filter?

    • @josbrun
      @josbrun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      samlol23 Multiple returns. 300 sq inches of minimum total return filter grill area per Ton of system capacity. 5 Ton system requires 1500 sq inches of filter filter grill area.
      If you want to read in to it, you will find it in the Title 24 compliance criteria, Table 150.0-D That is if you have any inclination to do the job rite.

    Is it ok to leave the closet door open and don't put those grills

    • @DIYProjectsByDave
      @DIYProjectsByDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on where the furnace is located and how air flows into the unit. For example, ours wouldn't work even if we leave the door open because the vent needs to be in the bottom.

    • @josebenedico7379
      @josebenedico7379 6 ปีที่แล้ว
