  • In the most thought-provoking conversation we've EVER had on the podcast, Jonny Wilkinson candidly shares his wisdom and lessons that may surprise you, will intrigue you and hopefully, help and inspire you.
Jonny was a relentlessly driven, ultra competitive, hard-nosed winner, famous for being the talisman who helped England lift the Rugby World Cup in 2003.
In the years since he finished a stellar career, one he said he "survived", he has been on a courageous quest to understand himself and discover true, lasting fulfilment and sustained happiness.
I hope you enjoy this chat as much as we did!

Jonny’s point about children being what they want to be is spot on. When a young child says they are superman - they are superman. They are totally invested in that moment. We teach children to lose that habit of being invested in the moment and I wonder whether that is wise.

Ideas I picked up from this gentle sage. Sorry for your years of pain and struggle with pressure Jonny - but now you have transmuted so much of it into 💎 true pearls of wisdom.
In each moment- are you going to control it or explore it.
Prepare to let the old identity die to live with full presence in every moment - but to defend this rigid idea of perfection. The past has not defined you just be in the moment.
Be fluid not rigid by being fully in the moment.
If I fail or succeed here what will this mean? Forget that - just be. Don’t defend your ego (self-importance). Stay in flow. Be curious where you have disappointment.
Love every moment. Breathe it in. Don’t put pressure on self or team. Help them feel the way they need to feel- liberated, effortless.
Passion is retained by seeing the space of opportunity for growth whether through loss or wins. Even invincibility becomes winning. Instead be prepared to explore and be open to whatever outcome presents itself.
You can see success as internal or external.
Which can you have a baring on? The internal one is a journey- let go of old conclusions and rigid ideas. Be open.
Passion and performance come from joy which come about through deep engagement.
Don’t get attached to arriving in that state - it’s a moment. Then it’s the next moment - keep engaging.
Be curious to explore - there is no perfect.
Our bodies may be declining but our spirits are still growing.
Who you are now is who you choose to be now. You are not a result of everything you’ve been through. Leadership is who you are now.
You hold your potential. So many of the voices in your head are the ‘apparent you’ constituted of old ideas. Fear of failure and the future - these are just the ‘apparent you’ not the real you.
Instead of living in your mind - you have memory and imagination - who you are is not crystallised.
Now is not the result of the past. Now is the state of living in the moment not living through between a past and future point.
    You can’t see the world differently until you see yourself differently. Let go of everything- ask;
How do you feel at your very best?
Just follow the truth. A person is part of a greater system. Don’t delineate between work/home - you are fluid between one and over. Don’t bring the story of lifting a World Cup is more important than lifting a cup of tea. Otherwise you get attached and rigid by what you’ve made that mean about who you are.
Go back to be nothing on the inside. Who are you? Undecided potential in every moment.
If… ‘I like the first word already’ = because it offers possibility and undecided potential.
Enjoy the moment of tension and stay present. Instead of succumbing to the pressure remember- everything that happens in the now, you’re well equipped for. When the future becomes the now you’re well equipped for that.
‘I just want to live this moment with all of me’
Every time you return to the unknown, be unknown yourself, then you can be excited by all the unknowns.
This is confidence. It’s about feel - the body and oneness about what you want to achieve. It’s the body and feel. Each one is a brand new journey- whether it goes in or not.
You never live a consequence in the now.
There’s the journey of time but there’s also the full engagement of the moment.
Self awareness means we can connect to the creative force that we are. These are goals. As we become less self-important the goals are less selfish and more visions that affect others. It becomes in service to others and less about self and more about others.
A question like ‘I’m the best in the world’ doesn’t matter so ‘I’ll be the best I can be’ which is also fear, stress, expectation and is a limited idea so instead; ‘I’ll be all I can be’ which then goes beyond rugby.
Injuries are messages. Life involves physical and mental health explore that first.
Humphries asks; “Schopenhauer said first they’ll laugh- then oppose you - finally accept it as common sense.
    Where are you?”
But that question doesn’t matter to JW. It’s not about where he is, it’s where society is with these ideas.
“If I need things to be a certain way then I’m held hostage to them”
Everyone has their own idea of right or wrong or how things should be. Liberate ourselves both from others’ opinions and expectations of us and of our own.
I have no idea of what’s right or wrong. Everyone is where they are supposed to be.
To think I know anything about anyone else! After the World Cup I thought I knew! I eradicated the idea of passion having any baring on performance.
Accept the past. I’m not the result of the past. I’m not attached to who I was then. It has nothing to do with who I am now. I’m fresh and brand new.
Your past is not one story or narrative. Explore memories in different ways - we see things as we are now.
It’s irrelevant that I might have done things differently and regret it.
How do you want your life to be.
    Not:
How do you want your life to turn out?
You may feel stressed and anxious when you want to feel effortless.
It may or may not be fine. Go and explore
No matter what happens - your worth and value as a human being can never be touched. The respect for who you are never changes. Your self worth is not defined by these external things.
No expectations or shoulds - just help them to explore. Who you are and how you see things are your own choice. I don’t know what shape you should be. I’m exploring myself.
    Explore disappointments as possibilities.
How am I at my best?
What’s stopping me being that all the time.
The super version of you - beautiful, flowing, connected version.
What am I holding on to that’s stopping me being that?
    Explore v control
Create the internal environment for potential to blossom
Be alive: choose now. Choose unknown.

By far one of the most moving podcast episodes I have ever listened to. Ever. I was totally captivated and fully engaged as I listened to Jonny's journey and profound insight. Although it touched on sport, competition and identity, this was truly about what it is to be human and explore our potential. Thanks to Jonny for passing on the message that true high performance must start with looking inward and exploring.

First 10 minutes, the man has just thrown out a mine of gold nuggets to those who have ears and eyes to hear and see. My own expeirence out of a dormant, non existent life and poor mental health almost runs parallel with what Johnny has found.
The pillars of a powerful, majestic and fulfilling life are laid deep in the soul built from gratefulness, grace to self and a love for the moment that breaks the shackles of internal conflict, unhappiness and anxiety over outcomes.
The love of life's road travelled is what he articulates in been full engagement, unwavering presence in the moment and a rebirth of selfs intuition, that brings true holistic enrichment on so many spheres.

Fully engaged. All of me, in every moment’
    J. Wilkinson. Legend💡 my take aways:
    >Flourishing leads to Self Belief
    >Engage fully in any moment
    >Fluid, a state of openness and readiness to maximal potential of each opportunity.
    >Curiosity and engagement = Inward reflection
    > ‘reveal the space of opportunity in disappointment’
    > what I’ve been through is a result of how I choose to be now.
Sits along side Seneca the younger and Marcus Aurelius meditations.

He's absolutely spot on. We all need to rid ourselves of the ego and accept that we are all in fact, equal, all with limitless but the same potential. Most people judge too easily, in both directions; either building others up or looking down on them. Live the moment. There's literally nothing else you can do.

What an interview! I work with sports people who walk this line of sporting life vs “real” life and it can be so destructive to well-being. I particularly look after sports people who struggle with their identity as they are in the closing stages of their professional career. It’s surprising how little support is available to these people.

thank you for this, i feel lucky to have watched, Jonny is probably the dream guest, its incredible to hear him speak at length and openly, a truly heroic figure who has reached an enlightened place, sharing incredible, peaceful insight.
and thank you also for this platform and content generally, i really enjoy hearing people talk about their careers and achievements (which i watched from afar in admiration), but also fascinating to hear them talk about the existential things they have learnt about themselves, the human psyche and life along their journey. your platform is open, gentle, and considered and people feel they can open up, and we're lucky we get to hear such valuable and hard won insight.

Johnny is like a warrior prophet. I’ve learned more from listening to this for 5 minutes than from 20 years of sports coaches

This conversation is more spiritual than the performance in itself. It's all about the mind process.

Unreal insight into the mind of the ultimate professional, by far one of the best podcasts out there... should look at getting the likes of o gara on at some stage, another who's brain goes beyond rugby and sport

So refreshing to hear a professional athlete speak in this way, thank you! I've just shared it around with many of my athlete and non athlete friends, sound life advice for everyone wanting to live, rather than exist 🙏🚴‍♀️

Mind blowing, I remember reading Johnny’s first book and getting super obsessed with my rugby performance which was my own choice based my own interpretation but this podcast is truly mind blowing and liberating and refreshing #Explore #UnLimitedPotential

An amazing insight from Jonny Wilkinson. Coming it from a totally different angle with a deep understanding of how his mindset has changed over time and shaped who he was / has become. A great episode. Thank you sharing this.

Literally my hero but how in tune this man is. You can compile the challenges of life into this way of thinking, continues to be a hero even after the game. This man changes lives.

Great podcast. Hats off to the interviewers who stayed 'fully engaged' and asked some great questions, despite their obvious unfamiliarity with the subject matter. JW will make more of a difference to more people in his new avatar than he ever would have imagined in his old one. Encouraging to read comments of which none are 'WTF was that?'.

I've seen and heard JW on many occasions this by far is the best of JW I've ever come across . Amazing what he achieved on the field but his legacy will probably have little to do with rugby but his ability to communicate on what performance is and how a person potential matches their expectations. I always remember on comment he made when he was playing in France. " To get the best out of himself he said it was important if not fundamental to get the best out of everyone around him" I still use and try to apply this principle all the time. Great listening to this conversation

Went for a walk and left my old identity in the park. This is groundbreaking stuff. I'm familiar with the Advaita Vedanta 'experience' type spiritual concepts anyway but to hear it articulated in such a practical and profound way by JW is pretty incredible. Skyscraper of a podcast.
