    "I want to be emotional in an aggressive, passionate way. For me that's screaming and yelling. Not singing melodically. I don't want to do that shit anymore." Alex Varkatzas, singer for Atreyu, speaks on his changing vocal styles and his band's return to the metalcore scene.

    This explains why Alex potentially isn't in Atreyu these days. I dig the hell out of Baptize, but I don't blame Alex. I hope he does well in his future projects.

    My exact sentiments on the Metalcore scene. The early bands like Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Chimera, Unearth, etc. were/are fantastic bands that brought something new to the table when Metal was still at it's low point in America in the late 90s/early 2000s. I'd say it was probably around 2007 when brands like Hot Topic and the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival popped up and you suddenly saw the "whiny" bands like Asking Alexandria, Bring Me the Horizon, and Black Veil Brides appearing, thus now giving the style the "scene kid" stigma.

      same could be said about bands like killswitch engage, atreyu and chimera by early metalcore/crossover bands like earth crisis, converge or cro-mags, think about it

    if you couldn't already tell by the musical direction of more recent Atreyu records, this video should make it abundantly clear why Alex is no longer in the band. Whether he left or was fired, I'm not sure, but the first single from his new band sounds a lot like early Atreyu, so the proof is in the music. I don't hate new Atreyu, but it's not really my favorite. Dead Icarus is very exciting.

    Funnily enough Leads Sails is (by far) my favorite Atreyu album and I'm not that into -core music. I think instrumentally and song-writing-wise it's just far ahead of their other work, even if the vocals are whiny at times. All That Remains' debut is whiny too and whiny about God at that. Ugh. It still one of the best metalcore albums out there.
    Edit: I seem to be contradicting myself. To be clear, I listen to these albums maybe twice a year nowadays, and they're the only metalcore albums I listen to.

    Lead Sails is my favorite album lol. It's not because it's more mainstream. It's cause it's a unique style that isn't really done by anyone.

    Metalcore still remains a very ambiguous term. Metal + hardcore? Yeah there are so many bands that could fit in that category these days. Fuck, you could say thrash metal is metalcore under that definition.

    • @thomassibley9475
      @thomassibley9475 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      most thrash was more inspired by NWOBHM. Anthrax leaned more towards hardcore i guess. I suppose NWOBHM was inspired by punk anyway, so Metal , and punk have been tied together for about 40 years

    • @36hunters
      @36hunters 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely wrong, hardcore influenced thrash is called crossover thrash and was the main influence (alongside the swedish melodic death metal movement) on the beginnings on metalcore. So yes thrash definitely influenced metalcore but thrash is definitely not metalcore.

    • @METALLiCMETALLEr
      @METALLiCMETALLEr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      36hunters Well how Hatebreed, Asking Alexandria, and Between the buried and Me are all considered the same sound/genre (metalcore) makes no sense to me. They all sound completely different from each other. Where as a genre like thrash metal is easily distinguished by it's sound.

    Noticed ya comment about these 'WHINY BANDS" and just want to point something out for all the people that may not know... if it weren't for some of those "whiny" bands like Asking Alexandria, BMTH, BVB, UnderOath, ESCAPE THE FATE (both Ronnie and Craig yes), Bless The fall , ADTR, etc.. etc.. a huge part of a generation or two wouldn't be listening to anything other than hip hop right now. i know this video is old and all but a lesson learned is better than limited knowledge IMO (generalization). i like all music/not all bands but BECAUSE OF THESE BANDS including the "post hardcore/emo" days.. they are now incorporating hip hop artists (as shitty as it may be IMO) its bringing exposure back to the rock/metal scene believe it or not. look at all the reaction videos that are out now.. hiphop/rap fans are checking out all these rock bands and never having heard it before its like what i experienced growing up.. i didn't like MCR and was big into Weezy, The Game, Tupac etc.. its a take away from selling out as a band, any band. It brings more people into the genre and they look back into older stuff. BMTH for example. REALLY got their big break from a BFMV concert in like 04 or something like that (my years may be off). yeah they had bottles thrown at them, yeah they're set was cut short but look at them now - MONEY, FANS, EXPOSURE. they sold out to a bunch of teeny boppers YES , that listen to it now but hey.. exposure is exposure. those same 12 yo guys and gals now listen to their older stuff like count your blessings, there is a hell etc etc.. maybe because they heard something on the radio like mantra? lol.... same with some of the "emo scene" bands like Escape The Fate look what ronnie did.. brought a new sound and style to the scene yeah everyone hated on kids with skinnys and what not but we didnt have MUCH rock that was too good at that time IMO.. dudes blowin up now (again). for example i wasnt allowed to listen to much rock growing up with a very protective/religious mother. I heard Kutless a Christian rock band one day from someone at church.. one of there songs had like 2 seconds of screaming.. i kept replaying that part over and over and over never heard anything like that before.. from then on i became a metal junkie i wanted to hear more (thank you jesus), because of the "whiny" shit i got into nu-metal and everything else.. first song i heard from a atreyu was "wait for you and lose it" in like 08 or sumthing like that bangers forsure.. congregation of the damned being my fave album . is what it is

    vocals in metal in general have gone to shit they're over-produced, over-polished, a lot of it are those so called 'fake' screams, 'fried' screams, which are easier on the singer's throat but sound really annoying almost cringy.

  • @cutsrosescents4950
    @cutsrosescents4950 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    well that's good he feels that way.
    but someone like mustaine sang out of necessity not because he ever was a vocalist.
    So a a&r guy telling you to sing different and you comprise yourself you can say whatever you want the damage is already done.
    How is your career today and who are you btw.
