  • Two-acre Barnes Cemetery was opened in 1854. By the mid-1900s it had no room for more burials. Over the next 30 years+ it became one of the most neglected burials places in the United Kingdom. This 14-minute video tells the story of this neglected cemetery, provides details of some of its monuments and occupants, and illustrates the devastation caused by wind, rain, rampant vegetation and vandals.

I used to walk around this cemetery in the late 1960's as a child. I loved it and found reading the inscriptions so interesting.

Great video....focused and intetesting. I have an ancestor in this cemetery who died in 1903 at the age of 29.He was put in the unmarked paupers grave so there may well be more bodies there than are accounted for. Thank you sir.

Yes, it's highly likely that the names of many of the deceased in this cemetery are no longer known.

This is awesome stuff David , and so interesting. I am fascinated by graveyards. All the years I lived in Putney yet did not know about this garden cemetery! Good work, thankyou!

Greetings from the Netherlands. Respect for you're professionel video's. There is also a very derelict cemetery in London Spitalfields.

Thank you for your comments. I will check out Spitalfields. Most London cemeteries eventually became full and owners were unable to generate income to cover maintenance costs. The cemeteries were then abandoned until volunteer groups started to clear up the neglected burial grounds.

Wow, Ebenezer Morley Cobb. Talk about a legacy. I guess the state of his personal memorial is balanced by the fact that there are pretty big monuments to him all around the world !!
