  • Goldenbridge Cemetery was the first Catholic burial ground to be authorized in Ireland since the 16th century. It opened in 1829 and was forced to close 40 years later following complaints from British officers stationed in Richmond Barracks. The story of why it opened and why it closed is compelling and consequential because of its unique place in Irish history.
Local historian and poet Liam O'Meara has published two excellent books about the cemetery and the barracks:
    - 'Goldenbridge Cemetery', Glasnevin Trust; and
    - 'From Richmond Barracks to Keogh Square', Riposte Books.

I went to school across the road and spent much time around this cemetery. You have done an outstanding job of showing how significant this little cemetery is to Dublin. Thank you.

I have a few drawings and sketches that I did round about 1990 when I was studying art at NCAD in Dublin. I loved going there to sketch as it was an oasis from St. Michael's Estate where I lived.
